To say that Black lives matter is not to say that other lives do not; indeed, it is quite the reverse -- it is to recognize that all lives do matter, and to acknowledge that African Americans are often targeted unfairly and that our society is not yet so advanced as to have become truly color blind.
We've become liberal about our liberalism, to our own detriment and that of the world. What if we could restore the radical edge and dynamic energy of religious liberalism? What would the world look like if, instead of advertising religion lite, religious liberals became the most observant people around?
Many UU leaders and quite a few individual congregations have openly moved away from viewing a humanist approach, free from theistic declarations, as the appropriate neutral philosophical place for all UUs to convene. It hasn't gone unnoticed, but the issue rarely gets addressed directly and openly. It's time for that to change.
