United we stand, divided we fall applies to more than just nationalism; it's the very fabric of all of life. Each one of us contributes to the unique tapestry that is this planet, our planet a thread in the tapestry of the Universe.
We judge others because it makes us feel powerful. We find righteous justification in throwing proverbial stones at another for doing or saying something that puts them out of sync with the flock.
Flag waving is not patriotism. Questioning and demanding that we live up to our values -- that is patriotism. And that is what we must do.
If we, as Americans, are to "remember those who attacked us and why", should we not conclude that Ronald Reagan was allied with al Qaeda?
So many of us watching the news from Boston last week on our televisions felt as we did on September 11, 2001: stuck waiting for an answer, waiting for some kind of relief.
