While college students should take hiring practicalities into consideration in picking their majors, the idea that unemployment among recent college graduates is primarily a function of their choice of major is simply not true and the idea that over-education leads to unemployment isn't supported by the facts.

We all want students to get great jobs and lead happy lives. But pretending that a piece of paper is all that's needed to do this is something we can no longer do. We need to stop telling students they've got to have a degree and instead tell them they've got to learn.

It is tempting to turn for solutions directly to our newest graduates. Instead, it seems fairer to ask their colleges and universities how well positioned they are to help fix what ails.
