American soccer fans are awesome. Like, Boston-Tea-Party-awesome, walk-on-the-moon-awesome or advent-the-iPhone-awesome. And like the iPhone, the number of Righteous American Soccer Fans viewable on our US streets is growing.
I just saw no reason for that cringe factor from purists whatsoever. There was also no jingoism. The Panama fans mixed comfortably among the crowd. Isn't it nice to see a collection of patriotically dressed people who are actually pleasant to foreigners?
The history of U.S. Soccer at the Azteca is one of abject failure, a drought that dates back to 1937. As our motorcade turns from one unnamed street from another, the shuttle starts to get hit with unknown objects thrown by fans on sidewalks. We must be getting closer.
