When you get sucked into a movie, you are still aware of your immediate surroundings and the gap between you and the screen. With VR, that disappears and you, the viewer, are actually taking part in the action.
Every sex worker has a horror story. We get robbed, arrested, beaten, humiliated. I file those events away in memory as "shit happens" because the alternative is too depressing. Maybe that's what Zola was doing: defusing the horror of her experience with humor.
