As commander-in-chief, there's no reason to believe Hillary would be any less a hawk than she was as the senator who backed George W. Bush's war in Iraq, or the Secretary of State who encouraged Barack Obama to escalate the war in Afghanistan.
Republican presidential candidates' extreme comments about economics and culture have dominated headlines, but lurking in the shadows is a hawkish Cold War mentality. Gingrich, Romney and Santorum want to beef up the military and put nuclear weapons back on the table.
War hawks like Peggy Noonan have to find some way to wipe the slate clean. They have to at least try to rewrite history because if they let the true facts go unchallenged, that means liberal doves were right about U.S. foreign policy.
Despite everything, hawks rule; doves never even get the chance to take off. If you're not addicted to force (and so failure), you're simply not a part of the grand scheme of things, of the world as it is.
