What My Students Think About....

In my eight years as an educator, I have spent the majority of my time with teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18, and I have come to one certainty: teenagers say some of the most profound, and most entertaining, things you could ever imagine. A day doesn't go by that my students don't enlighten me with their genuine innocence or entertain me with their youthful ignorance. For that reason, I believe there is so much we, as adults, can learn from today's youth. So, I decided to not only empower my students, but give them a forum where they can freely, and without judgment, share their thoughts, views and opinions on the topics that are current and being discussed in the mainstream media. Be prepared, because I can never predict what they may think or say.

So, here is what my students think about... Marriage Equality.

"When I was younger I didn't understand or like gay people. I thought it was different and not normal humans. They couldn't live in normal society... Then I thought what if straight people were persecuted and not allowed to marry?" - Bo, 9th grade

"I don't understand why people just can't get over how people love or who they love..." - Tijah, 9th grade

"What do I think about gay marriage? Honestly, I could care less. People should be allowed to be with whoever they want, and they shouldn't be judged for it." - Kendra, 9th grade

"You shouldn't be scared to go out in public and feel insecure with who you're walking with. You can't help who you love." - Baylee, 9th grade

"I honestly believe that marriage should exist. I keeps you from being more free and do what you want with no worries." - Steve, 9th grade

"Wow... Really?! A big deal about gay marriage?... I think they should just cut the crap and close the case, and never talk about it again." - Marquis, 9th grade

"From what I see, people in a relationship of the same-sex get along much better than the opposite sex." - Valeria, 9th grade

"If they wanna marry their same sex, opposite sex, their pet, or even a pole...Nobody has the right to tell people who they should or should not marry. Love is love." Christian M., 9th grade

"I support gay marriage. We are all equal even though we may be different." - Laurelle, 9th grade

"If people are now allowed to marry any race, then why are people nowadays not allowed to marry the same-sex?! It's the same thing." - Neha, 9th grade

"I honestly don't care if they allow gay marriage. I don't want anything to do with it. I'm not homophobic, but if a homosexual man came near me I'd be uncomfortable." - Karl, 10th grade

"Many people think it's wrong for people to marry someone of the same sex. However, I believe that love is love. Race, age, gender; none of it matters." - Marina, 10th grade
