A Mosaic: 4,000 Americans Dead

In remembrance of the 4,000 brave men and women who sacrificed everything for us -- and the two men who would continue this great tragedy, despite the cost to our soldiers, our military, and our nation.

Every single one of these kids died for nothing. In vein. For OIL

Dude they died for less than nothing. We didn't even get the cheap gasoline.

Sorry if anyone disagrees. What do you think the widow's tell themselves at night after they've spent the 500k?

Seriously, is their head filled with Bush's al ciaeda propaganda? I mean if I thought my brother died for my freedom it would probably alleviate some of the pain.

i hope that the tiles get re-arranged periodically to include the faces of democratic party enablers, who have voted with bush all the way down the line while condemning him ever time a news camera is in the vicinity...

If anyone is under the illusion that this administration has any compassion for any of these soldiers that have been killed or for the ones that wil lose their lives later on or the ones that have been wounded, wake up. The world they live in is one where people not like them are meant to be used for their end means. It's still hard for me to believe that people who have nothing in common with the people in this administration voted for them. They're paying the price for this decision as much as the rest of us are.

How distasteful to exploit photos of the dead like this. This won't change any minds, it will only anger people and further demonize liberals--another example of how politically tone deaf the left can be.

Plus, do you really think Bush and McCain and the others are laughing when they decide to go to war? They take their war games seriously; they are highly, highly misguided--and immoral, in my opinion--but an image of them laughing is inappropriate. It overstates the case.

Bush is laughing because he continues to get away with crimes against humanity. He has screwed over, collectively, millions of people, and he and his friends are war profiteers and immoral scumbags.

This mosaic is a brilliant piece of work. In addition to talent, It took remarkable patience and dedication, which could only have been motivated by enormous respect for the war dead coupled with a deeply felt desire to end the slaughter of American troops. Kudos and congrats to its creator, Nico Pitney.

While I agree with the intent of this piece, I think you're a little off the mark with "remarkable patience". You'll notice that the pictures all have their contrast and color level adjusted as needed to make the mosaic. In other words, you feed the picture of Bush and McCain, and the 4000 pictures of the troops, into a computer. There are many programs that can do this.

"Do you really think Bush and McCain and the others are laughing when they decide to go to war?" Sure they are. Bush makes fun of it when he's at a White House press dinner looking under a banquet table looking for WMD's. He smiles about how romantic it must be to fight in Afghanistan. And he smiles when he thinks about all the wonderful no-bid contracts he got for his friends in Halliburton and KBR while our soldier get contaminated water and get electricuted in shower.

He's laughing all the way to the bank and the jokes on us.

Since no other media voice pays tribute to the 4,000 soldiers killed in Iraq, at least the Huffington Post brings us a reminder of their faces, unfortunately framed by the two principal architects of this immoral,
genocide. Absent from this mosaic are the millions of Iraqis assassinated, to which nobody pays tribute or mention. This mosaic should not only have those two faces, but the faces of all the Senators and people responsible for accepting and voting for this war (I have in mind Senator Clinton, now running for President) . I AM CONVINCED THAT THESE PEOPLE ARE JUST WAITING FOR ALL THE IRAQI POPULATION TO BE ANNIHILATED COMPLETELY, SO UNITED STATES, BUSH AND ALL THE OIL COMPANIES TAKE OVER IRAQ; THE SADNESS AND DISGUST THAT PLAGUES US WILL STAY WITH US. THESE WAR MONGERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF IRAQ. NEXT THEY WILL WANT TO INVADE VENEZUELA, ECUADOR, ARGENTINA AND ANY OTHER COUNTRY THAT DARES TO ELECT PEOPLE WHOSE POLICIES ARE NOT AS THIS COUNTRY DICTATE THEM. WE KNEW ABOUT MANY TRICKERY, BUT NOW IT IS REALLY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND HOW UNLAWFUL THIS COUNTRY HAS BECOME, BUT THIS IS ONLY TO THE POLITICIANS JUSTICE WORKS ONLY FOR THE POOR, THE BLACK AND PLAIN CITIZENS, NEVER FOR POLITICIANS.

The actual number of US dead is far larger. The use of deceptive counting rules puts the actual dead into the 5 figure area. Now let's talk about the 50,000. The ones maimed by this war. Then we could get into the 1,000,000 or more dead Afganis and Iraqis. Let us top it off with all the deformed and sick with cancer of Iraqi and Afgani babies caused by the use of DU munitions.

The people who promoted and lied us into this war are WAR CRIMINALS.

yoiu are correct, if a soldier dies later of his wounds, he is not listed as a combat casualty

how deceptive like hiding the home-coming coffins. what shame.

"if a soldier dies later of his wounds, he is not listed as a combat casualty"

That is incorrect. 4000 is the number of US military fatalities in Iraq, both hostile and non-hostile. This number includes 730 non-combat deaths (accidents, suicides, etc.).

The correct number for combat related deaths in Iraq is 3270. I'm not writing this to minimize the significance of the deaths, but just to clarify the misinformation being thrown around here in the comments.

While i wait for my comment to be posted, i want to make sure my meaning was clear. The 4000 number includes all military deaths (both combat and non-combat) by injuries or illness SUSTAINED in Iraq. It most certainly does include those who die later out of country.

Your wrong about the number of US dead. I'm afraid that its much to hard to conceal in our society. The number maimed is also well documented. However, I would agree wit you that there is no way for us to know the damage that's been inflicted on the Iraqis and Afganis, either inflicted by us or inflicted by their own people.

Your numbers are hugely exaggerated. The 4000 dead number IS correct, and this number includes non-combat deaths, such as deaths in vehicle accidents.

50,000 maimed? No. There have been 29,000 wounded, and most of these were people who were able to return to duty within 72 hours..

The 1,000,000 figure for civilian dead has been discredited over and over. No one knows the actual number, but all reputable estimates are in the 50,000-120,000 range.

Using fraudulent numbers does not help your case.

The poster implies that it was Bush and McCain killed those people, which simply isn't true.
The fact is, WE killed those people. By not arresting Bush and his Klan the first time they tried genocide (9/11).

That's right...I'm a 9/11 conspiracy nut. Got a problem with that?

I agree, this is a communal guilt we share for:

allowing him to assume office in the first place without protests on the street

not demanding inquiry about the evidence for war

not ousting any elected official who didn't demand impeachment

and lastly; ANYONE who actually voted for him in 2004 should have a brand placed on their cheek signifying that they are responsible for what has happened to this country.

Hitler and Goering - Two historical murdering bastards - Hitler committed suicide after waging an unwinable war. After being sentanced to hang at the Nuremberg Trials, Goering cheated the gallows and committed suicide.

bush and mccain - Two historical murdering bastards - bush is currently serviing as dick tator of the United States - mccain is a United States Senator and is a candidate for President in the United States. Both remain at large and unindicted. Amazing fact - One international war criminal, bush, is still in power and an unindicted war criminal, mccain, campaigns to become president.

Guess this was the way it was in Germany prior to the end of WW II.

The 4,000 dead creating the Mosaic........should be titled, "The Failure of Diplomacy." As a former Vietnam Veteran, anyone who has ever looked into the glazed eyes of a soldier dying on the battlefield will think hard before starting a war. If anyone asks why they died, tell them, because our fathers lied. They gave all that was expected, and ask for nothing in return. May God Bless them and their families.........and may all rest in peace....if that's possible.

Bush, Cheney, McCain, et al, should literally curl up and die of embarrassment and shame.

IF MCCAIN'S SON IS IN IRAQ, HE MUST BE PROTECTED. I AM SURE HE IS NOT EXPOSED TO ANY DANGER. HE IS THERE ONLY BECAUSE HIS FATHER IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT, AND NEEDS THIS KIND OF PUBLICITY FOR HIS CAMPAIGN.

mccain should NOT be in this picture... !! whether you agree with him or not... he has a son serving in iraq and obviously believes in this policy with his own flesh and blood... and is willing to sacrifice whatever it takes.

on the other hand... where is dick cheney?

we could fill the smithsonian with pictures like this made up of soldiers killed under democrats. but remember, when a democrat is president, soldier deaths dont matter, right FDR!! right truman!! right johnson!!

as long as the D is next to your name, you can pile up hundreds of thousands of dead!!!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:16 PM on 03/24/2008

This is always the last line of defense. Let's justify all the deaths simply by pointing at someone else.

Perhaps, instead of saying, "well they did it too," we might choose to deal with today's reality. While the Bush's and bin Laden's of this world got us into this morass, all it takes is a vote to get us out of it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:42 PM on 03/24/2008

Sure. Compare WW2 to Iraq you dumbass. As for Vietnam. We THOUGHT we had learned our lesson on wasting lives fighting a war based on lies.

At least the 4,000 are, or were, volunteers. Not just the unprivileged who couldn't afford college.

Sad.

The "volunteers" as you put it that I know/knew actually were "underprivileged," thinking 2 year Service to Uncle Sam would help them get into and pay for college. Think about the High Percentage of Volunteers and National Guardians who had NO CLUE pre Shock and Awe what they were volunteering for under Bush/Cheny/McCain:
(1) endless and extended rotations in a war theater--never before in US military history have these rules been so abused;
(2) High probability of exagerrated, debilitating injuries--while the deaths in Iraq are comparatively low compared to prior wars, the serious injuries are up 15-20 times average. We have high tech ways of patching up and glueing back together our war damaged troops. No one really knows what the longterm impact of these devastating injuries will be.
(3) Terrible, terrible troop support--from our clueless shoppers back home, to the lack of medical and other follow-up care once soldiers return. Also, the meager financial incentives: the loss of jobs and homes and spouses due to endless/extended tours of duty has devastaged so many.

Talk about War Crimes. This Gang that couldn't shoot straight tops the list!
