7 Natural Oils For Revitalizing Hair, Skin And Nails

Posted: 08/12/11 12:28 AM ET

For centuries natural oils have been used to soothe, smooth and enhance skin complexions as well as aid in scalp, hair and nail nourishment.

Straight from their bottle or jar, these natural oils are excellent, inexpensive and chemical-free emollients. Natural oils can treat all types of skin, scalp, hair and nail issues. As bodyguards, they rescue dry, distressed skin and resurrect overprocessed, frizzy, limp and split-end-riddled locks. They come to the immediate aid of cracked cuticles and brittle nails. Natural oils tone, tighten, rejuvenate and preserve healthy skin, scalps and hair. And the following seven oils also function as conditioning makeup removers. Use them alone -- or add a teaspoon to your favorite shampoos, conditioners and body creams -- for all-over hydration and indulgence.

Argan Oil
1 of 8
Argan oil (indigenous to Morocco) is touted as a restorative anti-aging serum, often referred to as "liquid gold." This natural antioxidant is loaded with vitamins A and E, omega-6 and omega-9 essential fatty acids, which can revitalize stressed skin, dry hair and brittle nails on contact. It also works well on split ends or to add instant shine to dull hair.

Massage in one or two drops daily as a skin moisturizer or a leave-in hydrating treatment for scalp and hair.

I didn't see sesame oil on this list. Been using it for several years now and have great skin--both face and body.

Omega 7 from Sea Buckthorn is a skin care secret passed down for thousands of years from Ancient Greece. Legend says that the victorious Greeks were amazed that their enemy’s horses not only survived in a jungle that was abundant in a natural botanical source of Omega 7 oil from Sea Buckthorn, but that their horses were stronger and had shiny and radiant hair. Thus, the Latin name for Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), which means “Shiny Horse”. Of course, Sea Buckthorn became legendary for improving the coats of race horses in ancient Greece. www.1wallmart.com/category.php?id_category=12 Ancient Greek health texts attributed to Theophrastus and Dioskorid discussed the many health benefits of Sea Buckthorn. Its use was also praised in several Tibetan herbal texts; including “The RGyud Bzi www.cleansemart.com Palmitoleic acid is the key source of Omega 7's amazing skin support properties. Palmitoleic acid is a naturally occurring component of healthy skin and is a highly effective antioxidant providing strong anti-aging support due to its ability control free radicals. This key constituent of Omega 7 is also a strong emollient, which is a substance that soothes and moisturizes the skin and promotes the regeneration of tissues.

Love love coconut oil mixed with olive oil. Tremendous benefits on natural black hair

i have terrible skin and dandruff, would it be a good idea to mix these oils together for a "super" oil
for my freakish condition?

I don't know what you mean by terrible skin ... but in my case, my skin is horribly dry.

These days, I mix virgin olive oil and cocoa butter together and slather it on all over. The oil is absorbed very quickly. For my face, I use the oil alone and blot. Make-up smooths right on afterwards.

In short, after I started using olive oil in my dry skin dispair, I noticed a wonderful difference immediately.

Love Love Love - Argan Oil, since I've been using it on my hair at night, I haven't seen a split end, ever.
Jojoba - didn't care for it.
Coconut - incredible, and helps you loose weight if you take a tea spoon full before each meal. And you can use it on your skin and hair. But make sure you get the virgin and unfiltered kind.
Emu - never tried it, but I heard it's amazing. Never tried grape seed oil either.
Almond - I wasn't too crazy.

Everything is a chemical for goodness sakes! A tomato contains hundreds of chemical compounds. There is no such thing as "chemical free" anything.

I think it is disgusting that you would promote emu oil most people dont know that it is made from killing ostriches... ban emu oil. you have to kill the bird to get the oil how pitiful is that? to kil this creature for some stupid beauty treatment. Let people know where it comes from!!!

Thank you for your comment. I watched Goldie Hawn talk about the benefits of using it on The Tonight Show and was mortified that she would neglect the method of extraction. Being a vegetarian, I don't condone killing animals. I'm sure I have many who disagree, but we all have the right to our beliefs. Go natural and save the emu. Because I'm often chastised for my beliefs, I will not read or comment on any negative responses.

I think you mean the emu oil involves killing emus rather than killing ostriches.

Absolutely agree with the 7 oils nominated here in this article - but I'll add TWO more.
ROSEHIP OIL: Great for skin, either from a cosmetic or theraputic perspective. It regenerates skin cells, it's fast acting and it's particularly good for things like bites, stings, skin irritations, rashes etc.
MAGNESIUM OIL: NOT an "oil" as such, but it comes in a "liquid" form. Truly, one of nature's
"hidden miracles" ! Some months ago I developed a virulent and nasty condition on my hands - due to an allergic reaction to wearing synthetic gloves. I used Magnesium Oil and in ONE NIGHT the
condition completely cleared up! Not only that, my hands became years younger!

Absolutely agree about magnesium oil. I brush my teeth with it to keep my teeth white and my gums healthy (it tastes nasty so I mix it with oraMD tooth doctor). And to relieve stress I soak my feet in it before going to bed. I sleep like a baby! (But don't do this if you have any open cuts!)

Equal parts whipped shea butter and coconut oil with a little bit of aloe juice makes an amazing conditioner for hair!
