Stardom Never Spoiled the Whitney Houston I Knew

Posted: 02/13/2012 7:45 am

"Well, Nikki, we're still here."

Those were the words Whitney Houston said to me as we stood backstage at The X Factor in London, where she was set to make another promotional performance on her "comeback" tour.

I looked at her. "Honey," I said, "we're in the permanent collection." The collection in question belongs to Clive Davis, who was also with us that day. Clive, my friend of 40 years, is the musical genius who discovered everyone from Janis Joplin to Jennifer Hudson -- to Whitney Houston.

Clive inspires his artists and friends to excellence, and accepts nothing less from them. So it's no small feat to stay in that collection. Whitney knew that all too well.

I was introduced to Whitney and her mother, Cissy, in the late 1970s by their cousin Dionne Warwick. Whitney was just a teenager at the time, and no matter what people may say, I can tell you that the superstar who died yesterday was no different from the girl I met all those years ago.

Whitney was a free spirit. She was kind, authentic, fun and funny. She never took herself too seriously. She always remembered where she came from.

I remember the party I threw for her at the Palladium in New York City after her first album, Whitney Houston, went double platinum. (Double platinum albums are those that have sold 2 million copies.) By then, she had the world at her feet, but the first thing she did when she arrived was to seek me out and thank me, very sweetly, for going out of my way to host a party for her. What a delight to discover that Whitney Houston the worldwide sensation was just as considerate and charming as Whitney Houston the well-mannered daughter of John and Cissy Houston from New Jersey. She never changed in that regard.

That evening at The X Factor, I was so proud of her. She had gone through so much in the past few years, all of it very publicly -- the divorce, the drugs, the booze -- but through it all, she never lost her pride. She had always been strong, but the person before me that evening was stronger than ever -- having extricated herself from her complicated marriage and seemingly overcome the addiction problems that came with it.

That evening, she sang "Million Dollar Bill," and while it may be cliché to say so, she looked like a million dollars. She had on the most beautiful shoes. "Whitney," I said, "those heels are gorgeous -- are they Manolo's"?

"No," she replied. "They're Louboutin's."

"They don't look like Louboutin's, the heel is black," I told her.

"I have the heels painted black," she said. "The red is too showy."

Did I mention that she never forgot where she came from?

What a lovely article. But folk won't like o appreciate it. Why? Ain't scandalously lurid enough. Regardless of how Sista Whitney died, I have yet to read anyone say she was some mean vicious b-word. She loved folk and wasn' ashamed to show it. I hear how she went out of her way to welcome new artists with words of encouragement and praise. I don't read about many folk bein' like Sista Whitney in the entertainment field. Lot of em' think they boo-boo don't stink and they are GOD's gift to the whole of mankind. Neva heard no body say anythang like that about Sista Whiteny. It seems to me, all the pain she caused was only to herself. "Her own worst enemy" isor somethin' like that is how she described herself. But sh didn't hurt othas; that just wasn't her style. Gracious lady RIP. Life.

I read on another website that whitney had an abortion, some days before she died. They are pointing the finger at brandy's brother ray J. They say comedian Jamie Fox knows the truth and Ray J was with her. How can you explain the beer in the room? Whitney drank champagne a top shelf drink, not Heineken. She didn't need to eat 2 meals, the other meal in her room belonged to Ray J.

Prominent people's tragedies brings out the vultures all the time. People like to pick apart people like a hyena on a dead carcas to make themselves feel better. It is good to hear a positive story about whitney, not just the trashed out scandals. Her music will live on in her true fans. Haters, go to the next celebrity tragedy and pick them apart. Whitney will be laid to rest in front of her family and true friends this weekend.

Thank you for this rememberance. Did not know her at all, just loved her music.

It was easy to see Whitney was a down to earth person, the way she looked shy when given a compliment and when given applause from her fans she was always fanning her hands as to say STOP. Her reference to GOD every time she spoke. Her being thankful to just about everyone and everything she had. I am BLESSED, I have my music, my daughter, my god I always hear her say in interviews God bless you Whitney...R.I.P.

Thank you for this inspiring and uplifting remembrance of Whitney.

Oh please. I loved her music and her amazing talent. However she was not strong. Clearly an addict, she let the darkside win and destroy her. And we must learn from that.

So you judge strength from what happens in the end? Good for you. Let's hope you are very strong at the end of your life.

Wellk said Dianneasmith1. I don't know why people think "having strength" means that you don't get weak at times or go into a rut. Her strengths were seen throughout her journey. Her weaknesses were seen throughout her journey. She was not one dimensional. I don't think any of us are.

Thank you, and you and others should come together and show the world, who Whitney was, because they have this perception that was this nasty druggie attitude person, which she wasn't.

So what killed her, unicorns and fairies?

are you a coroner/ medical examiner? Are you able to conjure up some toxicology lab results??? I think not. So, wait like everyone else. I hate people who make automatic assumptions about other people in life. Everyday is a new day in life, you don't judge others upon their past.

What a sweet rememberence I always thought she was a diva, just goes to show you never really know what a famous person is like. Thank you for this, makes me miss her more.

To me, Whitney always came across as a person who is down to earth and remembers where she came from. Just like Nikki Haskell described her.

I will play her music forever.

The GOP Motto: Vote For Us And Nobody Gets Hurt
03:59 PM on 02/13/2012
I dunno...I hate to speak ill of the dead, but, having worked in the industry in the 90s and early 00s, I heard dirt on everyone including her. Hotel managers, airlines, clothing boutiques all found her a nightmare to deal with. One prominent LA limousine company had her on a DNS (Do Not Service) list as revealed in GQ magazine March 2001.
11:20 AM on 02/14/2012
I'm surprised your post is on here. I "tried" to post something similar yesterday and it never showed up. It wasn't offensive, just true.
12:36 PM on 02/15/2012
You do want to speak ill of the dead. That is why you are commenting negative crap about her, when she can't defend herself. How cowardly is that?
Rules in life to live by - Don't talk ill of people who can't defend themselves from your claims.
Never strike a person, when they are down. I guess, you never were taught these things as a child.
Well, if she only pissed off hotel managers, airlines, boutiques and a limo company. She did pretty good. What these people think about you don't matter in life. What matters is, if your friends love you and forgive you transgressions. Your friends are the one's that uplift you, when you are downtrodden and remain in your heart. I think we will see on Saturday that she had lots of friends and family that loved her. I am sure TMZ will be there with a video camera and the other media outlets.
