It was you, Fredo

For several months I have considered the continuing presence of Alberto Gonzales a personal failure on my part. I had wished him gone. I had said insulting things about him to my friends. I had written things about him, although I didn't quite finish any of them. He deserved to be gone. Nonetheless he was still there.

I just couldn't believe that a man who had lied under oath that often was still the attorney general of the United States. I couldn't believe that those of us on this side of things had been utterly ineffectual at getting rid of him. What's more, I have to admit, I became almost awestruck at his ability to hang in there. Which goes for the whole crew, by the way: say what you will about George Bush (and there is almost nothing I won't), he's still president, and it's amazing how much bad stuff you can continue to do as president even if your poll numbers are below 30.

In any case, Gonzales has resigned. I wish him a happy time hiring lawyers and living off the slush fund someone will set up for him. Soon we will know why he left at this particular moment. The mind reels at the possibilities. What could possibly be even worse than all the things he's survived? At some point we'll find out. Stay tuned.

I hope he's not worried about his legacy, because he will have one, and it will be not unlike what awaits almost all the members of this administration: they will be fodder for art. Yes, art. Dick Cheney said a couple of months ago that history would be his judge, but I beg to differ: history will be nothing compared to the plays. This administration will be the subject of hundreds of plays; the playwrights will be drawn again and again to the astonishing, amazing panoply of evil and complicity the Bush Administration has provided. Gonzales will be a hilarious comic foil in most of these productions -- a jack-in-the-box who will pop out, say he has no recollection whatsoever of anything, and pop back in. Short actors will kill to play him.

By the way, I have a pet theory about Alberto Gonzales: I've always believed that the reason the President called Gonzales Fredo was that when they first met, Bush incorrectly believed that Gonzales' first name was Alfredo, and Gonzales was too much of a toady to correct him.

I meant to download that theory before it was too late, and the good news is, where this administration is concerned, it's never going to be too late.

Did you notice that when Bush was saying nice things about Alberto he had to look down at his notes before he said his name? So much for intimacy.

Why do we question anything that happens anymore ???
The most corrupt and crooked administration to ever breath air in the white house can do any fucked up thing they want. The media should prefix every story and scandal with " Guess What The Cocksuckers Have Done Now "
And end with " What The Fuck Is New ?? "

Maybe the texas team had some kind of intervention cause Bush started drinking again. "If you dont stop now, we'll leave you" the Rove left, friedo, and now his wife isnt going to australia with him. Pretty soon we'll hear the tick tock sound and find out theres gonna be a new rehab facility opening on a Crawford ranch now that he's accepted the gift of sobriety.

Well, as long as Nora is around we don't have to worry about the Bush administration art making a go of it in oil, pastels, or watercolors. I'm sure as soon as Nora gets anywhere near one of those paintings she'll find a way to jab an elbow or finger through the canvass.

Gonzales nickname Fredo comes from the character in "The Godfather, Part II." He is the brother who wanted to be part of something big, but couldn't be trusted with all the information. "I can handle things! I'm smart! Not like everybody says . . . dumb . . . I'm smart and I want respect!"

The official story is ALWAYS a lie. And as far as "timing", the only thing that matters is protecting the inner circle.
When you look at bushco with the above in mind, figuring out whats going on is easier. It is clear that their criminal lawyers have told them they're cooked. So the siege mentality means everyone is expendable. Watch and enjoy as they consume themselves.

Well, it's great to see what tv / movie fare is likely to be in 2009, and what the year's big flops are likely to be about.
Before I made cheery predictions of the great satire/burning exposes to come, I'd remember a few things: first, the quick appearance and vanishing of "That's My Bush" back in 2000... What were they thinking?
I also remember how warmly received that biopic about Reagan was, that one starring Reagan's biggest hater, Barbra Streisand. Ah yes.
Great comedy and drama stem from our essential truths, and liberals have made a cottage industry out of deluding themselves about how "stupid" Bush is, and how "stupid" Republicans are. That will come back to bite you all. There's my entertainment prediction.

Nora, you wrote "what could be worse...stay tuned"....more nibbling away, destruction of our Constitution by yet another Bush toadie for Attorney General, perhaps? Eliot Richardson types no longer exist? Just spineless slime bags who took an oath to uphold it and then tried to destroy it?

Wasn't "Fredo" the incompetent brother of Al Pacino in the Godfather who botched his assignment in Las Vegas?
In the end, Fredo died in the lake, killed on orders by his brother.

why did gonzo resign? for the saem reason ROVE resigned.. my theory is that the republicans are trying to remove, from public view, the more controversial people in the adminstartion..to avoid giving the democrats easy targets in the '08 elections....then up pops senator craig and HIS shananigans in the mens airport bathroom........geez, don't these guys ever learn..then we have the policeman getting killed in a speeding BUSH motorcade....why do these convoys of SUVs go so fast...thro' friendly towns..are they that afraid of the american people?...as don imus would say......'the wheels really are coming off'.......

Bush and his cabal are absolutely paranoid. What they know that the rest of the nation is slow on the uptake about is that this administration has essentially reduced us to a third world country and just like dictators and autocratic rulers from those countries, it is dangerous to move about among the unwashed masses.

15. The American people have helplessly watched as the current occupant systematically and intentionally supports practices that are rapidly destroying the environment of America and the world.
16. Average working Americans have allowed the current occupant and the compliant legislative branch of government to provide welfare in the form of huge tax reductions to the wealthiest population while routinely denying and eliminating protections, benefits and vital services to the rest of the American population.
17. The current occupant has loudly and repeatedly declared his unwavering support to American military active service personnel and veterans while simultaneously and covertly reducing their benefits and services at every opportunity through denial of critical needs and reductions in the budget items they depend upon for their protection and well-being.
These are just of few examples that I have been able to remember without doing any research or consulting any of the vast and growing collection of published facts.
I felt compelled to perform this exercise in recollection because of recent events that defy precedent in my lifetime and even perhaps in the history of this nation.

7. The elected officials chosen by the American people who are charged with the task and responsibility to maintain checks and balances to prevent irreparable damage to our government and society have betrayed the nation in nearly every measurable regard rather than stand up to the obstinacy, arrogance and intransigence of the current occupant.
8. The current occupant has plundered the American people into a mountain of domestic and global debt that will demand the repayment efforts of working people for generations to come.
9. The current occupant has created a culture of corporate welfare that will be very difficult to reform without causing major economic upheaval to virtually every working American.
10. The historically and constitutionally guaranteed rights of all American people have been methodically and systematically compromised or eliminated without the consent of regular citizens for whom the constitution was intended to protect and serve.
11. Under encouragement and license from the current occupant, Machiavellian acts of torture and personal intrusion have become a practice that America is known for the world over.
12. The common peoples of nearly all nations of the world do not trust the judgment or actions of the American government while the current occupant presides.
13. The current occupant has corrupted and dishonored the global perception of western Christianity in part by declaring himself to be a practicing Christian who is carrying out the will of God in his dangerous and aggressive military acts and threats against other sovereignties.
14. The world has watched with incredulity as the American people have allowed the current occupant and his incompetent chums to stand on the sidelines while one of America’s great cities was destroyed by damage caused from the failure of previously known and documented inadequate levies intended to protect that city from a raging storm, and then years later have done little or nothing to restore this city to its former greatness.
