Ancient Christian Meditation Discovered

Posted: 06/13/10 08:31 PM ET

A prayer used some 2,000 years ago, still in use by monks and nuns in far away caves and monasteries but mostly unknown to the rest of the world, is the subject of a new documentary feature film and book. It's called Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer and focuses on a prayer thought to have first been practiced by the Apostles.

Most of us want peace and happiness in our lives; that's what we live for. Sometimes it may feel that true peace and spiritual contentment are impossible in this chaotic world of stress, speed, over-stimulation and overstretched finances. At times, the desire to run away to some distant land may be highly tempting.

Most of us cannot just retreat to a cave or monastery where we can be totally contemplative, meditating and praying with God without disruption. We don't have the luxury of leaving it all behind. The answer is to integrate meditation and prayer in all of your daily activities. Like the Apostle Paul suggested, pray constantly. The Jesus Prayer is the perfect meditation. It's like a Christian mantra.

Monks, nuns and spiritual hermits have left their troubles in the "civilized world" behind for centuries, initially escaping to the Egyptian desert. One of the earliest Christian monks was Saint Antony, a man determined to find God in silence and isolation. Born to a wealthy Alexandrian merchant family, one day he passed by a church and heard the minister reciting the words of Jesus, "Go, sell everything you have and give it to the poor, and come and follow me." He took those words to heart and at the age of 34, gave away his entire inheritance and retreated into the desert. He found an abandoned tomb and lived alone there for many years. In the desert he not only found a way to abandon his material desires, he learned to live with very little water or food, seeking only prayer as sustenance. Saint Antony, considered by some to be the father of all monks, recited the Jesus Prayer over and over, seeking only the mercy of his lord Jesus Christ.

This ancient prayer has been passed down through generations. Initially recited verbally, it was ultimately written in obscure instruction manuals intended only for monks. It was kept in secret, only to be revealed as part of a dedicated life of isolation. Some spiritual counselors advise using it only with the help of a disciplined guide, in the context of a life devoted to monasticism. Others say that anyone can use it.

Still in use some 2,000 years later in monasteries and churches that grew out of the Egyptian desert and spread to Greece, the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe, Slavic lands, and Russia, the Jesus Prayer is now being revealed to those of us in the western world.

There is no longer a need to become a monk or nun to know and use this prayer. It isn't necessary to leave your family, work or home behind and renounce everything. The prayer, Kyrie Eleison in Greek (Lord have mercy), or the Jesus Prayer, has great power. The documentary feature film and companion book from HarperOne, Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer, will introduce methods for using this prayer early next year, so that anyone can use it at any time and in any place.

Travelling with camera crews to ancient lands of peace and solitude, for the first time on film hermits, monks and nuns in caves, monasteries and convents share this ancient mystical prayer with the outside world. Based on a book The Spiritual Meadow, written in the seventh century, a priest, John Moscos, takes a student, Sophronious, to meet monks seeking spiritual words of wisdom. In the new film and companion book Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer, Very Rev. Dr. John McGuckin and I retrace their steps, bringing the wisdom of both ancient saints and living Christian sages and spiritual masters to you.

We travel to the oldest existing monastery on earth, St. Antony's, in Upper Egypt bringing you inside St. Antony's mountaintop cave where he lived for 46 years. You'll meet the staretz, or living spiritual master, Father Lazarus, and hear his explanation of what exactly this simple prayer is, and how to use it. We bring you along on a journey to Mt. Sinai, the place where God spoke to Moses. We introduce you to the wise old men of St. Catherine's monastery, built in the late fifth century. Seeking only a word and a prayer, we take you to Greece and holy Mount Athos, a peninsula of peace profound where only monks live since the 10th century. As Christian nuns and monks fled to eastern provinces since the fall of Constantinople in 1453, we travel their routes to Eastern Europe, to Romania, Ukraine, Old Russ, and Russia.

Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer is almost finished. Look for it around Easter of next year, but in the meantime, please join us on the journey with a few sneak peeks at www.MysteriesoftheJesusPrayer.com

You say: "We travel to the oldest existing monastery on 'earth', St. Antony's, in Upper Egypt" -- fascinating how in your education and awareness you specifically chose to disregard the capitalization of the planet that gave you birth, Earth.

I can't help wondering, why?

im not religious but i believe that jesus was a real character, a spiritual master who when on earth always advised people to not worship him for he came to deliver a message and teach us to return to the source through prayer(meditation). so i think i would use it, spirituality is what we are lacking afterall. but they better not sell it.

I think there are many passages in the Bible and other religious scriptures which describe the meditative state. Records of experiences of silent, transcendental, divine consciousness are found in most spiritual traditions. Perhaps due to the long lapse of time, the actual techniques of effective meditation were lost or distorted. I find it interesting to hear that an ancient Christian meditation has "surfaced". I wonder if it has been preserved in it's purity or if it has been interpreted merely as emotional prayer. I think praying to God is beautiful, but not the same as transcending all thought and merging with the unified field of silent, unbounded consciousness.

Actually mysticism has been a fundamental part of the faith for many Eastern Christian traditions (Orthodox, Eastern rite Catholic, etc.). Some of the same prayers that were recited in early Christianity are still repeated in these Churches and monastic practices have (I would argue) effectively not changed for hundreds of years. These traditions are practiced in the US and there are monasteries here as well of both monks and nuns. The older monasteries in Europe and the middle east, etc. may be slightly different culturally than those in the US, but the services/prayers, disciplines and theology would be almost identical.

Christian mysticsm and mediative practises suffered quite a blow in the Reformation and Counter Reformation as Protestants and Romans both sought to reject that which they thought, at the time, was superstition. The Eastern Church as a whole never rejected either and is the healthier for it. It is the west that is trying to rediscover it now .

Wow Meditations on the Mystery of Jesus's lifes. You know what you discovered is something I done since I was 8 yrs old. I am 47 now. It's called and hold your breath- prayering the Rosary. Yes the Rosary is a form of prayer and meditation on the mysteries of Jesus life. Protestantism just discovered the Rosary! Joyful Mysteries , Sorrowful Mysteries. Glorious Mysteries. and Luminous Mysteries.

Joyful are the Annunciation, the Visitation, The Nativity, The Presentation of Jesus, and finding Jesus in the temple

Luminous are The Baptism in the Jordan, The Wedding of Cana, Proclamation of the Kingdom of God, The Transfiguration, and The Eucharist.

Sorrowful-Agony in the garden, Scourging at the pillar,The crowning of thorns, carrying the cross, and crucifixion

Glorious Resurrection, Ascension to heaven, Pentecost, Assumption of Mary, and Coronation of Mary.

I recently attended Latin Mass for the first time and was awed by the meditative quality of the liturgy.

That's him in the flesh...er...pixels.. I just found this newer rendering recently... I had an older one for a long time.. white tux and shades.

I'm no more particular to the eighties than any other decade. I picked Max because he was someone's cyber alter-ego---an ironic alter ego, and I love irony.

I'm not sure how this is a new discovery; I first encountered the Jesus prayer in Salingers Franny and Zooey. In the sixties.

I won't go into all the evidence that the "Apostles" are larger-than-life exaggerations. Still, interesting in all, Dr. Chumley. Of course, I personally feel that any "power" that prayer has, is internal. For a person of faith, prayer acts the way meditiation does for a Zen practitioner or Taoist. It stabilizes thought, clears one's mind of the clutter of everyday living, and perhaps lowers heart rate and blood pressure.

So I'd have to ask. For a person who, say, loves sports and is fiercely loyal to their favorite team, is watching a game a form of meditation?

It's a form of idol worship. God didn't say we couldn't have our idols, He just doesn't want to be second to them.

Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

That's my point. How can you define such religiously-based "laws" when no proof exists for any of them? Read "Jesus Interrupted" by Bart Ehrman. It's really quite interesting, to see how the Jesus who was main character of the original stories, was not at all the figure you say I must worship.

And please don't use your bible to back up your claims. It represents a circular argument.

"Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. "

An idol is whatever we turn to instead of God for our protection and sense of well-being. (Most of us make that money but it can also be power, influence, food, sex, etc., not just the obvious "idols" of stage, screen and arena. ;-)

Through prayers Christians used to address God, to be able to speak to God is like a miracle. It is difficult to explain how it happens because it happens in an irrational, inscrutable and wonderful way. It is a very important element of religious practice, and it is also very personal and intimate. You can use prayers developed by Christian saints, or use your own ones. As for me, I rather prefer my own ways to address God - it depends on some or other situation. Human beings and the world in which they live are not the same as they were many centuries ago, and their relationship with God may be different as well.

If god is all-knowing, how is it miraculous to pray to him?

Prayer is not intended to tell God things, like an email. It is meant to be a worshipful discipline. The whole idea that I can use God as a personal psychoanalyst or as my very own gumball machine is heresy. Not at all what the Jesus Prayer is about. It is repeated until it becomes part of an almost subconscious orientation toward God. Prayer is worship.
