Being overwhelmed has become an epidemic -- at least it seems that way.

As an Executive Coach, I hear many stories from my private clients about their lives in the trenches.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

You spend your days juggling deadlines; goal lists; boss drama; requests; work groups; emails; phone calls; business trips; Twitter; Facebook; Instagram; LinkedIn; Pinterest; a shrinking social life; family time; unread dusty books; yoga class; laundry; dinner time...

If you are anything like my clients, you feel you're constantly running to catch up with your life.

Take a breath.

There's a way out of this madness, and I can help.

But first, we need to have a talk.

If there's one thing that I hope you take away from this post, it's this:

If you want to ditch overwhelm and live from a place of openness, peace and contentment, you must first take back control of your life.

But, be warned: There is no quick fix. You will need to do some work, and you will need support.

To get you started, I've compiled a short list of three steps to help you become a better leader of your own life:

1. Set a clear vision for what you want.

A vision is bigger than a goal. It's about how you want to live and what you live for. It includes your mission, your purpose, and what you value most in your life. My vision is: "I want to live a life that allows time with my family and to help other women shine."

2. Align your life with that vision.

Evaluate what is working for you in your life, and what's not working. What parts of your life do not line up with the ideal vision you have for yourself? Take time to get clear about the gap you see between where you want to be and where you are.

When I started taking back control of my own life, the first thing I realized was that my job wasn't part of the vision I had for myself. Getting clear on that was a real wake-up call. I decided to create a plan to leave the corporate world so that I could create my vision.

Now (several years later), I work with private clients and can manage my business from any corner of the world. My work life incorporates the flexibility I need to be more engaged with my family, which is spread across the world. I now coach women who aren't yet fully living up to their full potential because they haven't aligned their lives with their visions.

Don't worry. Aligning your vision with you life doesn't have to be drastic as leaving a job you enjoy. This was just the case for me. We all have unique situations and visions of what an ideal life looks like. Don't be afraid to be honest here. Nothing is outrageous or silly. What you want is what you want. No one else needs to approve or agree with it but you.

3. Take action to make your vision a reality.

After you identify the gap of where you are and where you want to be, begin to take action. Every day make choices and take steps that move you toward your vision.

Break big goals into smaller steps to avoid overwhelm. Many people fail to follow through simply because their goals are too big to achieve in the first place. Small goals are achievable and realistic. Achieving one small goal at a time builds your confidence and creates the momentum for you to achieve the big goal that seemed so impossible at the beginning.

That's it. It really is that simple to change your life. But, that doesn't mean it's easy.

Recognizing where your life is unaligned with your vision is one thing; taking steps to change it is a different story.

Changing old mindsets, habits and patterns is hard, and trying to do it alone makes it so much more difficult.

You are busy. You are tired. You have responsibilities to meet. I completely understand why it's scary. And I know you believe you don't have time or energy to do all the work that's required to take back control of your life.

That is where I come in to help.

So, tell me your story. Share what you are overwhelmed with. Let's talk.
