Anna Burger

*Ms. Burger is secretary-treasurer of the Service Employees International Union.
*At first there was some uncertainty about her identity, as the superdelegate list published by the Washington Post lists her not as a delegate from DC but from Pennsylvania.
*The explanation is that she had been living in PA but has recently changed her residence and voting registration to DC.
*That she is now a DC delegate was further confirmed by the contact I was able to make with her office at the SIEU.
*The list on Wikipedia also shows her as representing DC.
*This list indicates that she is committed to endorsing Barack Obama.
*A Web search leads to numerous references to Ms. Burger on the Internet.
*She was one of the founding members and is presently chair of the ChangeToWin organization, a coalition of the SIEU and six other unions.
*When the SIEU recently endorsed Obama, their press release quoted Ms.Burger:
"This is one of the most important presidential elections workers have faced. Families are struggling, we're fighting two wars, and a majority of
Americans are now worried that their children will be worse off than they are. Obama is the right person at the right time to lead the change we so
desperately need in our country."
*It would appear to be safe to presume that Ms. Burger's personal support as a superdelegate will go to Mr. Obama.
*Ms. Burger has been author of blogs appearing on HuffPost, e.g. at
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/anna-burger
Retrieved from "http://superdelegates.org/Anna_Burger"

Involvement in the Democratic Party
*Worked in Rev. Jesse Jackson's 1984 campaign for president and credits Jackson's campaign for developing leaders within the African-American community. "Right now, African-Americans may form the largest single bloc of at-large DNC members," said Flournoy.
*After Ron Brown won the race for the national committee's chairmanship in 1989, he hired Flournoy as legal counsel for the party's 1992 national convention.
*When Howard Dean became DNC chair in 2005, he called on Flournoy to run the transition team.
http://dyn.politico.com/printstory.cfm?uuid=68063759-3048-5C12-00639DA56D033C37
*She told Joe Lieberman, "You think Bill Clinton won only because of his ideas. Well, his ideas did drive people to this obscure governor out of Arkansas. But he got the vote because he got the turnout and he got the turnout because he had people like Harold Ickes on his team, people who had a lifelong connection to labor and a strong level of comfort with minority groups."
From An Amazing Adventure by Joseph Lieberman, page 213.
*Head of transition, Tina Flournoy has been actively involved in Democratic Party politics for nearly 20 years. She is Assistant to the President of the American Federation of Teachers, focusing on public policy. Flournoy was the finance director for the Gore for President Campaign, political director for Vice Presidential nominee Joe Lieberman, and deputy campaign manager for the 1996 Clinton/Gore re-election campaign. She was counsel to the DNC and general counsel for the 1992 Democratic National Convention. Flournoy has also served as staff director and co-chair of the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee, and now serves as a member of the Committee. *August, 24, 2007, Tina Flournoy and Donna Brazile, who worked on Gore's campaign and serve on the Rules and Bylaws Committee, said Florida has the chance to have its votes counted if it follows the rules. The DNC tried to persuade the party to hold a separate contest Feb. 5 or later, perhaps by mail, to determine which candidates would get the delegates. "Disenfranchisement is not just an abstract term," Flournoy said. "It shouldn't be tossed around for political gain." http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/20428245/
*11/2/2007, Clinton Campaign Announces Washington DC for Hillary Steering Committee and Flournoy is a member of the committee. http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/release/view/?id=4027

Contributions
*Using both Hartina Flournoy and Tina Flournoy in HuffPost's Fundrace, has made numerous contributions to Democrats' campaigns, but never contributed to Barack Obama. http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_detail.php?city=Washington&st=DC&last=Flournoy

Previous Campaigns
*"Dean was discovering that he needed to find some Washington insiders to trust, after all -- and he found them in what seemed an unlikely quarter. In his primary campaign in 2003, Dean struck up a friendship with Tina Flournoy, a well-respected operative who worked with Al Gore and Joe Lieberman during the 2000 presidential race and who now held a senior position at the American Federation of Teachers, one of the party's most influential unions. Flournoy was also a charter member of an informal dinner clique whose members referred to themselves, good-naturedly, as the Colored Girls. The core group included several African-American women who had reached the highest echelons of Democratic politics. Donna Brazile, the veteran organizer who managed Gore's presidential campaign, was a regular; so were Minyon Moore, a consultant who worked in the Clinton White House; Yolanda Caraway, a public-relations specialist; and Leah Daughtry, who was McAuliffe's chief of staff (and who was retained in that job by Dean). Guest speakers at their dinners frequently included probable presidential candidates and top members of Congress. During the race for chairman, Flournoy brought Dean in as well, and he quickly clicked with the group."
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/01/magazine/01dean.html?pagewanted=3&ei=5090&en=551f820dec6af495&ex=1317355200&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss
*Flournoy was Gore's finance director on his presidential campaign in 1999 and was considered problematic to some people because of her ties to tobacco interests.
http://diversityjobmarket.com/library/politics/camp/082999wh-gore-bush.html
*Flournoy's relationship with Clinton and Gore administration may have begun in 1995 while she was general counsel for Philip Morris. At this time the Justice Department investigated whether the DNC was knowingly recycling soft money into ads for the Clinton/Gore re-election campaign.
(From Al Gore: A User's Manual, By Alexander Cockburn, Jeffrey St. Clair, p240)

Miscellaneous:
*While serving as General Counsel for the Philip Morris Companies, Flournoy was named as a member of the Kennedy Center Advisory Committee by President Clinton, January 19, 1995.
http://www.clintonfoundation.org/legacy/011995-president-names-fourty-two-to-kennedy-center-advisory-committee.htm
*In 1978, Flournoy wrote a Master's Thesis at Georgetown University: "The Portrayal of Women in the Comic Strips Blondie and Brenda Starr: The Mary and Eve Motifs"
