WHO: Senior Foreign Policy Advisor Dr. Susan Rice and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Sarah Sewall
WHAT: Obama press conference call to discuss troop levels in Afghanistan.
WHEN: Thursday, July 3 at 2:00 p.m. EDT
SUMMARY
Senior Foreign Policy Advisor Dr. Susan Rice and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Sarah Sewall discuss Senator Barack Obama's plan to increase the number of troops in Afghanistan, in this press conference call. Both Rice and Sewall cited Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen's statements that he would not have enough troops to defeat the Taliban in Afghanistan unless the U.S. withdrew from Iraq. "The offensive activities initiated by the enemy has dramatically increased and we simply don't have the assets on the ground to deal with them appropriately," Sewall said (2:46). "Adm. Mullen and Sen. Obama are taking a global view of U.S. national security interests and requirements. They're not focused on one country or one battlefield as John McCain is in Iraq," Rice said (7:58).
