WHO: United States Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, and Ohio Governor Ted Strickland
WHAT: Press conference call to "discuss how McCain's support of NAFTA and "Bush mindset" on trade policies have contributed to the loss of a million American jobs."
WHEN: Friday, June 20, 2008 12:00 PM ET
SUMMARY
This call concerns Senator Obama's position on NAFTA and the loss of American jobs, held in response to Senator McCain's visit to Canada today to discuss trade policy. Senator Brown and Governors Granholm and Strickland describe the effects of Bush Administration economic policies on their communities in particular, painting a picture of closing factories and jobs lost to companies producing outside of the United States. McCain's record on economics is criticized, with Senator Brown stating:
This is one issue where John McCain has not tried to put distance between himself and George Bush, its an issue where he hasn't changed his mind unfortunately and continues the same failed trade policies that have already inflicted such damage on the industrial heartland of this country. Like George Bush, John McCain offers more of the same - free trade, even when its not fair trade, trade at any cost, even if it costs us our jobs as it has so many Ohioans...There hasn't been a trade deal in fact, that John McCain hasn't liked. KAFTA, PNTR for China, Oman, Chile, Singapore, and of course the North American Free Trade Agreement.
