WHO: Former Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI), Former Congressman Jim Leach (R-IA) and former Bush White House intelligence adviser Rita E. Hauser
WHAT: Press conference call for three prominent Republicans to endorse Sen. Barack Obama and to launch Republicans for Obama
WHEN: Tuesday, August 12 at 11:00 a.m. EDT
SUMMARY
Three prominent Republicans endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for President on this call, as the Obama campaign launched "Republicans for Obama." Former Iowa Congressman Jim Leach said "the change [Obama's] so gracefully articulating is more renewal than departure and by this I mean, well, a break with the ideological policies of the moment, it is rooted in very old American values that are as much a part of the republican as the democratic tradition." Leach criticized McCain plans for a long-term presence in Iraq and for his objection to meeting diplomatically with American adversaries. Hauser also criticized McCain for his "bellicose" and "threatening" rhetoric toward Russia in response to the Georgian crisis whereas Obama was far more willing to engage the international community while still remaining firm.
