NYC Independence Day: Go Fit or Fabulous this Fourth of July

07/01/2013 12:15 pm ET | Updated Aug 27, 2013

A truly American holiday, the 4th of July is one of our nation's most celebrated days of the year. From neighborhood parades to swanky pool parties, family and friends across the country put their work on hold to celebrate America's birthday. Everyone has their own July 4th traditions, but nothing really says Independence Day like fireworks, hot dogs, picnics, and parades. If you're in New York City this summer, celebrate the holiday in style on a Fireworks Cruise, or enjoy a day with the family at the Great 4th of July Festival in the Financial District. No matter your mood or budget, there are plenty of things to do in NYC this 4th of July.

Be Healthy

If hot dogs and ice cream aren't up your alley, have no fear. Celebrate July 4th while maintaining your summer beach bod by participating in Roosevelt Island's Firecracker 5K & 10K. Enjoy beautiful views of the city as you make your way along the East River, and reward yourself afterwards with a post-race meal, included in the registration fee. Runners will also receive a complimentary beer mug -- ideal for carrying on the Independence Day celebrations later that night.

Party on the Pier

Do it big in the Big Apple at Circle Line's 4th of July Party on the Pier. This private party will feature drinks, music, barbecue, and best of all, fireworks. In fact, Pier 83 is located so close to the Macy's July 4th Fireworks that guests will feel like they're a part of the show. Because presents are traditionally given on birthdays, Circle Line will celebrate America's Birthday by giving every attendee a ticket for a future Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise.

Be Fabulous

What better way to celebrate the red, white, and blue than by watching a fireworks show from a luxurious NYC rooftop bar? Among the numerous bars in NYC throwing 4th of July celebrations, the Hudson Terrace is hosting a fireworks viewing party that will undoubtedly make for a fabulous night out. Throw on your most patriotic attire and head over to this stylish July 4th party for an all-you-can-eat BBQ buffet, an open bar, a dance floor, party favors, and more.

Go Classic

When in doubt, go the classic route at Macy's 4th of July Fireworks show. Rep your stars and stripes at this annual commemoration of America's freedom, featuring one of the biggest and brightest fireworks display in the whole country. This free show lasts nearly a half hour, and the whole family will enjoy singing along to the patriotic songs playing throughout the spectacle, from "God Bless America" to the National Anthem.
