30 Rock Star Marriages: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Posted: 11/26/2012 7:52 am

If you want to marry a rock star, you better have a strong constitution because it could be a bumpy ride. Yes, we know, all marriages, in theory, are always a work in progress, but if you mix one rock musician with thousands of crazy, love-sick groupies, it just could spell t-r-o-u-b-l-e when it comes to expecting a monogamous union.

We're going to run down 30 high-profile rock stars who have had good luck/bad luck after signing their names on one or two (or three or four ... or seven) marriage licenses. As the great comedian/philosopher, Bill Cosby, once said when asked why he thought his movie "Ghost Dad" didn't fare so well at the box office after his television sitcom "The Cosby Show" had huge success, consistently being No. 1 in the TV ratings: "Things happen." So, with that said, "things happen" in good marriages. That explains why, after tying the knot, the marital cord often unravels and marriages sometimes fall apart, and even get ugly. The following rock stars have had their share of ups and downs in their marriages... although we're happy to report that quite a few actually get an A+ for keeping the love light on at home for many years while they've been on the road touring.

Rock Star marriages: the good, the bad and the ugly. Hit it.

  • Rod Stewart

Rod Stewart has had three marriages (we're not counting his out-of-wedlock liaisons): By definition, the word divorce means something went wrong so that marriage technically lands in the "bad" column. In order of appearances: Alana Hamilton Stewart (1979-1984); Rachel Hunter (1990-2006); current wife, Penny Lancaster (2007-present, pictured) ... all is good here. They reportedly all get together for extended, blended family day during the occasional holidays with all of his (eight) children. We like it. Nice and civil. Wonder if he asks Penny frequently: "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?"

  • Mick Jagger

Rolling Stone meister Sir Michael Philip "Mick" Jagger has been married two times. Are we shocked that he even said "I do" twice given his penchant for the roving eye syndrome? Marriage number one ended not so well with first wife Bianca Jagger (seven years) and wife No. 2, Jerry Hall (nine years), finally seemed to just give up after Jagger contested the marriage and had it annulled. Could it have been his random sleeping habits that kept him awake/away nights? (He has seven children with four women.) None of our business, but he must take a swig of Geritol every now and then to keep that energy level up. "I Can't Get No Satisfaction." Really?

  • Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr married Maureen Cox in 1965. After 10 years and three children, they divorced in 1975. In 1980, the former Beatles' drummer met actress Barbara Bach on the set of the film "Caveman." Sparks flew; they got married in 1981 and have been happily married for 31 years. We guess he took a deep breath and decided to "Stop and Smell the Roses." We love a happy ending.

  • Neal Schon

Let's just cut to the chase with this Journey singer. Neal Schon is currently engaged to Michaele Salahi (pictured -- the alleged White House party crasher ... 'member her?). There were five marriages before he put a ring on her finger. So we're thinking those marriages ended up: bad, bad, bad, bad and bad. Now, will this future marriage last? Roll the dice. (Do you smell "prenup?") We hate cynicism, so let's give it a chance, shall we? "Don't Stop Believin."

  • Paul McCartney

Let's break the former Beatle's marriages into three parts: Life seemed ideal with first wife Linda Eastman for 29 years until her untimely death in 1998; good, then bad, then ugly with Heather Mills who McCartney divorced after six years of marriage; we're guessing all is right with the world nowadays as he seems happily married to current wife Nancy Shevell (pictured). He's Paul McCartney for heaven sake! What's not to love? In 30 years, he'll be 100 so he could have 30 good years with her. "All You Need Is Love."

  • Jon Bon Jovi

Let's address the elephant in the room here. We ALL have little setbacks with our children every now and then. Now, moving on, we love a good love story when it comes to our rock stars. So refreshing. We can report that Jon Bon Jovi, who spends months on the road with his band each year, has been happily married to his high school sweetheart, Dorothea Hurley, for 23 years. In an interview way back in '06, the rock star told us that he wasn't sure how he became the poster boy for a good marriage. We're guessing because he deserves the title. "Who Says You Can't Go Home?"

  • Keith Richards

Even though founding member of the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards, has three children with Italian born actress Anita Pallenberg, he has been married since 1983 to model Patti Hansen (shocker!). This marriage seems solid so it is definitely in the good column. We love it! Keith, call us and tell us your secret. We really need to know! Where's your reality show? Never mind, that's probably why this marriage works. He keeps it all under his hat. Memo to Patti: It's "All About You."

  • Gene Simmons

Gene Simmons, who took 28 years to tie the knot with former Playboy Playmate girlfriend Shannon Tweed (pictured), seems to finally have all his ducks in a row, we think, in spite of his "4,800" alleged conquests. Gene, if you're not good to your wife, we will find you and it won't be pretty. Treat her with all the love and respect she deserves or you can KISS this! (There will be no tongue jokes here.)

  • Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen was married to actress Julianne Phillips from 1985 to 1989. After their separation, Springsteen and Patti Scialfa began living together, and when the divorce was final, he married the singer in 1991 (with whom he has three children). His union with Julianne ended not so well and there was some controversy after they parted ways. "Springsteen received press criticism for the hastiness in which he and Scialfa took up their relationship." Looks like The Boss got caught up in the "Tunnel of Love."

  • Ozzy Osbourne

Things must have ended up badly with Ozzy Osbourne's first wife, Thelma Riley, since Sharon Arden Osbourne has admitted to breaking up that marriage. It's been a good marriage with Sharon for 30 years in spite of his penchant for biting off bat heads. Sounds like "The Diary of a Madman."

  • Jerry Lee Lewis

Not making fun (promise) but, seven marriages for one of the pioneers' of Rock 'N' Roll... whew! In their order: No. 1 lasted 20 months so that's bad; No. 2, four years -- must have been bad in the end; No. 3, good for 13 years; No. 4, sad ending; No. 5, another sad ending; No. 6, not too bad for at least some of the 20 years they were married; No. 7 -- newest marriage since March 9, 2012 is good right this minute, we hope. Nope, not naming names of the wives here in case JLL wants to appeal this verdict. Look 'em up. Don't care how many times he's been married, we still love his music!! "Great Balls of Fire!"

  • Richie Sambora

Bon Jovi lead guitarist Richie Sambora was a lucky man from 1994 to 2007 when he was married to the beautiful actress Heather Locklear. It seemed very good while it lasted. This is one of those cases where we all hoped their marriage was rock solid, but, alas, sadly, not after all was said and done. They have one daughter together so all is not lost. Let's wish them back together: "Every Road Leads Home to You."

  • Tommy Lee

Rock's bad boy has been involved in premature matrimony three times: Elaine Bergen -- must have been ugly since they divorced after only one month; the lovely Heather Locklear -- 1986-1993 -- guessing not good in the end. Never quite got that relationship anyway; married to actress Pamela Anderson -- 1995-1998 -- two children. Must be good now since "in 2008 it was announced that he and Pamela were back together and living with each other and their children." We hope they are still together. Somehow they seem right for each other.

  • Steve Van Zandt

Steven Van Zandt and his lovely wife, actress Maureen Santoro (pictured), will celebrate 30 years of wedded bliss on December 31, 2012. One more Happy New Year for "The Sopranos" couple. Their wedding song "When a Man Loves a Woman," seems to say it all. Congrats on this "Magic" that you two created together (with a little help from your "boss" and the E Street Band.)

  • Prince

"The Artist Formerly Known as Prince"... wait, we mean to say the artist currently known as Prince has been "romantically linked with many celebrities" including (real names): Kim Basinger, Madonna, Vanity, and Sheila E. just to name a few. The first lucky lady to become his wife was his backup singer and dancer, Mayte Garcia, whom he married on Valentine's Day, 1996. After divorcing in 1999, the "Purple Rain" singer tied the knot with Manuela Testolina in 2001, although they divorced in 2006. He's apparently not spending his nights alone. Reportedly, "he has been in a relationship with protégée Bria Valente since 2007."

  • Steven Tyler

The Aerosmith front man is another example of how (let's say alleged) bed hopping can sour a good marriage. We just simply don't have time to go over every relationship here. In 1976, Tyler married model Cyrinda Foxe, divorcing her nine years and one child later. In May 1988, he married clothing designer Teresa Barrick, divorcing her 18 years and two children later. When will these promiscuous rock stars learn that monogamy can actually be a good thing after one says "I do? " When Tyler turns 90, he'll be sorry he doesn't have a good, loyal wife to put cold compresses on his... forehead. Then he'll beg, "Baby, Please Don't Go."

  • Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton's love life is a bit complicated. In 1979, five years after her divorce from George Harrison, Clapton married English model Pattie Boyd. Trouble brewed in the marriage when the "Layla" singer became addicted to alcohol (after kicking a drug habit) which placed a strain on their relationship. "He was an unfaithful husband and conceived two children with other women during their marriage." They divorced in 1989. After Clapton finally quit drinking, things in the romance department picked up. In 2002, he married Melia McEnery. They have three daughters, and have "settled into a happy and stable family life."

  • Alice Cooper

The indomitable "Bed of Nails" singer Alice Cooper (aka Vincent Damon Furnier) settled out of court in the early 1980s on a palimony suit, but eventually found true love with ballerina/choreographer Sheryl Goddard whom he married in 1976. "In November 1983, at the height of Cooper's alcoholism, Sheryl filed for divorce, but by mid-1984, she and Cooper had reconciled. The couple has remained together since. In a 2002 television interview, Cooper claimed that he had 'never cheated' on his wife in all the time they had been together. In the same interview, he also claimed that the secret to a lasting and successful relationship is to continue going out on dates with your partner. The couple has three children." Thirty-six years of marriage to one woman for a rock star... priceless!

  • Bret Michaels

OK, here we go. "Poison" lead singer Bret Michaels proves that "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" in the romance department. Michaels has two daughters with his "on-again-off-again" companion of 16 years, Kristi Lynn Gibson. While filming the finale of his reality show, "Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It," Michaels proposed to Gibson. The finale aired December 20, 2010. In July 2012, Michaels announced that he and Gibson had separated." Say it ain't so!

  • Eddie Van Halen

Here's an example of how a rock star marries the cute girl-next-door-actress (Valerie Bertineilli) and then when things get tough after 26 years of marriage, he's outta there! Guess Eddie Van Halen wanted to become "Unchained" to his lovely wife. Or, maybe she was the one who packed up the minivan and split. Who knows? We just know they were so cute together and now they are both married to others. We're sure their son Wolfgang is loyal to both mom and dad so not all is out of place here. Their marriage was good, then bad, but, hopefully, never really ugly. The "One Day at a Time" actress's current husband, Tom Vitale, seems like the winner in this scenario. Good for him.

  • Sting

We can't leave the obvious pun on the table here. Things must have stung really bad for Sting's first wife, actress Frances Tomelty, when the British musician packed his bags and left the building in favor of the "new" love of his life, actress Trudi Styler. Sting married Tomelty in 1976, leaving her in 1982 shortly after the birth of their second child. (She should have called The Police.) Their divorce was final in 1984. Styler and Sting, who married in 1992, have four children so all is good for them.

  • Don Henley

One of the founding members of The Eagles, Don Henley is in the good column, married to model Sharon Summerall since 1995. Check it out: "Performers at the wedding included Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Billy Joel, John Fogerty, Jackson Browne, Donna Lewis, Sheryl Crow, Glenn Frey and Tony Bennett." Talk about your high-profile wedding singers ... Whoa! Henley later wrote the song "Everything Is Different Now" from the album Inside Job for Sharon. He's the man!

  • Glenn Frey

Another founding member of The Eagles, Glen Frey took the plunge two times. The "Take It Easy," lead singer married Texas debutante Janie Beggs in 1983 "but by 1986, opposites repelled and they wound up in divorce court." ... While filming the video "Livin' Right," he met dancer Cindy Millican. After a two-year courtship, they married in 1990 and have three children. Whether you subscribe to the "old" or "new" math, it still adds up to 22 years of marital bliss so he obviously has that "Peaceful Easy Feeling" in this marriage.

  • Joe Walsh

Eagles guitarist and singer Joe Walsh has been married four times. First marriage to Stephanie Walsh (1971-1978) just didn't work out; then he walked down the aisle with Juanita Boyer (1980-1988); tried again with Denise Driscoll (1999-2006) and when that marriage went south, he married Marjorie Bach -- sister of Barbara Bach -- in 2008, making him brother-in-law to Ringo Starr. So far, so good. Looks like Walsh is taking "One Day at a Time" with this marriage.

  • David Bowie

David Bowie once declared himself to be bisexual in a 1976 interview with "Playboy" magazine. "In a 1983 interview with "Rolling Stone," Bowie said his public declaration of bisexuality was 'the biggest mistake I ever made' and 'I was always a closet heterosexual.'" Hmmm... does it really matter in the big picture? The "Space Oddity" singer "married Mary Angela Barnett on 19 March 1970 at Bromley Register Office in Beckenham Lane, London. They had a son together, Zowie Bowie (also known as Duncan Jones, film director) and divorced on 8 February 1980 in Switzerland. In 1992 Bowie married Somali-American model Iman. They have one daughter." They do make a beautiful couple so all is good here!

  • Dee Snider

Twisted Sister front man Dee Snider may be our favorite heavy metal role model of all time. It's hard to come up with many heavy metal band members who have been happily married for 31 years. The "We're Not Gonna Take It," singer/songwriter married costume designer Suzette Snider in 1981 and they have four children. Dee Snider once said, "I was born and raised a Christian and I still adhere to those principles." Congratulations to this happy couple!

  • Tom Petty

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. (Just threw that in for no reason.) On the home front, the "You Got Lucky" singer had a bit of luck with first wife Jane Benyo. Their marriage lasted 22 years, producing two daughters. Being on the road so much obviously took its toll. After Petty's divorce, he gave marriage another shot five years later. He's been married since 2001 to Dana York (pictured), and unless you know something we don't know, all is well with those two lovebirds.

  • Bono

Don't know why it's a surprise that Paul David Hewson has been married for 30 years. Actually, that would be Bono to U2 fans everywhere. The Irish singer/musician/humanitarian married Alison Hewson in 1982, and they have four children. What could have gone right in this rock star's marriage? Obviously everything. The "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" singer is clearly on the right track in the marriage department.

  • Phil Collins

Phil Collins has an interesting marital history so let's stay focused. The "Sussudio" singer has been married three times. He married Canadian Andrea Bertorelli in 1975. They met as students in a drama class in London, had a son and divorced in 1980 "after she started an affair with their painter and decorator." Collins met his second wife, Jill Tavelman, in 1980. They were married from 1984 to 1996, and had one daughter. "Collins openly admits that some of their divorce-related correspondence was by fax ... but denies that this took her by surprise. Collins married his third wife, Orianne Cevey (pictured), in 1999 after a five-year romance. They have two sons. Announcing their separation on 16 March 2006, they were divorced on 17 August 2008. Collins stated in 2010 that he had no intention of marrying again."

  • Frankie Avalon

OK, OK, OK. We know Frankie Avalon is not your typical rough-around-the-edges bad boy rock star but he was a teen Rock 'n' Roll idol in his day and given the fact that he and his wife Kay (pictured) will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 19, 2013 (and they have eight children), we wanted to leave you with some warm and fuzzy feelings about how one of the first "rock" stars on this list was actually able to live the white-picket-fence life. Stamp his marriage very GOOD. (And, he's still just sooooooo handsome!)

Heck, I thought the article was about "mid-life" marriages that have lasted, and since I'm "mid-life", I thought it might encourage me. But that isn't the craziest thing in my desire to find love. You want crazy? Last night I dreamed I found love... but the man was so reserved he couldn't hardly speak to me and couldn't tell me he loved me. Oh, now you want insane? He was also a virgin... and I'm middle-aged. No, he wasn't a young man. He was the perfect age for me. Ha. The sooner I lose my last marble the better. I have a proven track record of marital failures, so maybe I will get a lucky break and have another sweet dream for a change tonight....

HOLD IT HERE it says marriages that have lasted? most of them have been married many times before and the latest one is lasting? That does NOT count people. If it where the FIRST marriage and it still is on, now thats is the correct reporting here.

They may be married for all of those years, BUT have they been faithful? Does she really care, or is the money, the fame and the opportunity do what she wants while b-jovi is away worth hanging around? BonJovi is ehh....so it makes one wonder.

Sometimes it pays to just turn a blind eye to "boys will be boys"..& as far as I've seen.. they mature and become 100% faithful to the women they've intrusted they're future to & with.. but don't think for a minute that a band like Bon Jovi spent 2,3 or 4 hours on stage & then went to prayer meeting.. Not !!!.. They had the pick of the litter for many years.. & still have it if they want it...but they have lives now.. it's called getting old & settling down... I applaud those under the microscope of Hollywood & the Music World who've been able to stay married through thick & thin.. I just hope that when they walk away from it.. they're is enough relationship to fill the void of the bright lights !!!.. & most of all, they become totally faithful to their spouse for the remainder of their life !!! The spouses have earned it by staying & turning a blind eye to the wide wide world of FAME !!

In order for any legal proceeding to be binding, including marriage, the authorities must be of sound mind and body. Since cannibus use is permitted in Colorado and Washington State, any adult person residing there can be considered a user of narcotic substances and not legally of sound mind and body.
So, marriages performed there are null and void as are any legal proceedings. Look this up yourself.

Which goes right along with my ideal that marriage should have an expiration date agreed upon by both parties & signed by a Judge before the wedding !!. Then, when the expiration dates rolls around if both parties agree to re-up for another year or however long they agree upon, then have it drawn up by a notary ($10) & signed by the Judge.. & continue in the marriage... but if either party decides that they've had enough upon the expiration date.. then they are free to go.. no court dates, no lawyer fees, no nothing.. just see ya.. & I hope the rest of your life works out just fine. Property is sold & funds are split 50/50.
If the couple has kids under 18, those 12 & under go to the party agreed upon by both parties before the marriage. Those over 12 are given their choice as to which parent they want to live with. Visitation is agreed upon before the marriage... the goal of all of this is to stop the madness !!.. Have you been to Family Court & heard these lawyers lie case after case to make money.. that money should be used for college funds or Medical funds.. but not given to these leaches !!! Family Court lawyers have such a racket going on, it's stealing plain & simple !! Especially when the parties involved could eliminate this whole process with a "Contract Marriage" !!!

Simon LeBon of Duran Duran has been married to model Yasmin Parvaneh for 26 years. I'd say that's pretty good!

If you look at the pictures above, on the right side there is a blurb about each couple. Bon Jovi married his HS sweetheart according to that. :)

I am an old lady who loves Bon Jovi's music. How lovely to hear he is still married to his high school sweetheart. Very best wishes to his family.
