African-American doesn't really apply to Obama since he is not a descendant of African slaves. The term was born of necessity since blacks in America were deprived of knowledge of their ancestry other than the continent. Thus, I refer to Obama as Kenyan-American or of Kenyan descent, just as I refer to myself as being of Japanese descent. I only refer to descent by continent if I don't know the country.

African-American is most appropriate to Senator Obama. His father is AFRICAN, his mother is AMERICAN.
For the rest of us, we're Black but do we KNOW our ancestors were African?
That term is taken on faith for many of us precisely because we don't know our geneological history.

As for the labeling, WYSIWYS - "What You See Is What You Say". I've been playing The Sims so long, I tend to think of people in their classifications: "Light", "Medium", and "Dark". Obama's a "Medium".
