England, 1170 - Henry II: Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest? And sure enough, a band of loyalists made short work of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury.
United States, 2006 - Bush II: Will no one rid me of these meddlesome U.S. Attorneys? And boom, there go eight of them - though not all 93, as the White House had originally discussed.
Henry II atoned for Becket's murder by having himself flogged in public, naked, at the door of the cathedral in his capital city.
Will Bush II atone for the sacking of the U.S. Attorneys by having himself flogged in public, naked, at the door of the National Cathedral?
