For Oscar Weekend, Gloria Steinem Talks Film to Me

What's Your Reaction:

When I talked to Gloria Steinem recently at the Skirball Cultural Center in LA, it would have been remiss of me, with the Oscars coming up, not to talk about feminism and film, among the many subjects we touched on.

You can read all of my ''Patt Morrison Asks'' Los Angeles Times column about Gloria Steinem here:

She made me laugh and made me think, when I asked her whether she had a favorite movie that we might call a ''chick flick,'' and even whether that label itself was a problem. Here's what she said:

''Yes, because they don't call it a prick flick, you know. There are a lot of prick flicks.''

So, I ventured, is there a film that exemplifies what should be on screen?

``To me, one of the greatest ever made was "Antonia's Line," which won an Oscar for best foreign film in the 1990s. It was written and directed by a Dutch woman.''

Read more, including what she has to say about Hollywood's ''cougar'' craze, at the link above.
