Thatcher and Palin -- Out of Frame, Out of Bounds

What's Your Reaction:

There's word rumbling around Great Britain and beyond that Sarah Palin is angling to meet Margaret Thatcher, the first woman to become that nation's prime minister.

It's a photo op that would be a triumph for Palin: an image supposedly showing the solidarity of conservative female leaders.

But it would be bogus. Not photoshopped-bogus, but dishonest nonetheless.

Baroness Thatcher is suffering from dementia, according to her daughter, Carol. Writing in the Daily Mail more than a year and a half ago, Carol Thatcher chronicled her mother's decline: "On bad days, she could hardly remember the beginning of a sentence by the time she got to the end.''

For a woman of Thatcher's formidable intellect and unflagging energy, it's a terrible decline. For Palin's camp to use her as a human prop, as in a photo op, it's unforgivable.

For one thing, Thatcher was never about female solidarity. For another, she did not suffer fools gladly; her exacting impatience with anyone not up to snuff was legendary. And what the woman who fought to become prime minister and fought harder to stay there might have said of a governor who walked away from her elected office can be vividly and acidly imagined.

From UK's The Daily Mail - Mail Online:

"Sarah Palin should not assume that, after jetting over to London, she’ll be able to swan in through Margaret Thatcher’s front door, pose for snaps round the hearth, add it to her presidential campaign portfolio and hop off back to Alaska.

Lady T is picky about who she is seen with.

‘We would prefer a discreet meeting in the margins, perhaps at a dinner where they chance to meet, so to speak,’ said
a friend of Maggie.

A modest proposal...

I'm sorry to hear that Margaret Thatcher is suffering from dementia. While my political philosophy is very different than hers, she was indeed a lady of "formidable intellect and unflagging energy"; she must sense that her capacities waning and that must be a frustrating and frightening place to be.

Having said that, on Maggie Thatcher's worse day in her present diminished state, she is still an intellectual mountain compared to Palin's molehill of a brain.

Surely the Thatcher family will not agree to this "so obvious" ploy for a photo-op. Sarah certainly is a pro at using special needs people (or children) as props.

Why not let Sarah stand by cardboard cut-outs of the Queen, Lady Thatcher...even Fergie! She'd be able to convince her rabid supporters that they were "real" people.

Palin already uses her son (Trig) as a human prop... why would she stop at using someone else?

So if her daughter doesn't want mom to meet the Alaskan Queen then who exactly is setting this up? If she has serious dementia she can't be living alone so who's guarding the store. It's like SP announcing she's going to Tiffany's and take what she pleases without paying. I'm sure Tiffany and Co would say otherwise. Leave MT alone SP, you are more toxic to humankind than BP. At least we have an estimate of the toxins its spewing and are working hard to control it. She is just like a secret deep water leak washing up on the beaches of our homes daily

Quick, someone in England, find that lady that complained to Gordon Brown about all those foreigners moving to England. Set up a meeting with that lady and just tell Say Rah the lady is Mrs. Thatcher.

Say Rah should just have a photoshop done to create a picture of her with former PM Thatcher. Then she can post it in her Twitter/Facebook along with her other lies.

Good idea. Would it be any less fake than anything else about her? Sarah's totally comfortable with fake. Besides her rube supporters wouldn't know the difference anyway. They probably couldn't pick Margaret Thatcher out of a lineup.

Ms Paylin uses her own children as props. At a funeral, even. Why not a very ill old lady? The plan to move into the Thatcher aura is weak. It won't impress her fans. They'll ask: "Marge who? Is that England or Britain?" The rest of us already know.

All she wants is a photo for her face-book. Maybe she can go to the Wax Museum. That Might work.

Dementia or not, the Iron Lady would rip Palin to pieces in ANY meeting.

Glad to see you here, Pat. I had this read this article in part and in full on other blogs (Andrew Sullivan cited it and I believe one of the Alaska blogs.)

At this point, Sarah's complete inappropriateness and tawdry use of anyone and anything to get what she wants (chief among them some bogus bonafides) should come as no surprise. This is a woman after all who has used to a Down Syndrome child, dragging him pillar to post, with a callousness that is breathtaking. But this proposed use of Margaret Thatcher is just too...vile.

I hope they put a stop to this. At some point somebody has got to throw a cog in the wheels of this charlatan's endless quest for an importance she is so unworthy of. Enough already.

Thank you for an excellent article. You summed it up so well.

"Human prop"? Perhaps Gov. Palin really would like to see Baroness Thatcher. one of her political icons, in person while the Iron Lady is still alive. Why do people always look for some devious, depraved motive in everything Sarah Palin does?
04:39 PM on 06/18/2010
I'm sure you can guess why!!! She is an empty suit/dress/biker jacket with a VERY troubling and divisive agenda.

Sarah, leave Margaret Thatcher alone and quit trying for a photo-op to support your endless quest for fame.
