Was Romney Truly a Massachusetts Resident When He Voted For Scott Brown?

Posted: 04/19/2012 5:10 pm

Please note: This article originally stated that Romney would not reveal his 2010 tax returns because they might show he was not a Massachusetts resident. That was an error . Indeed, on Romney released tax returns for 2010 he did list "Belmont, MA", as his home address, but we do not know if it were his own address or his son's. We also do not know if he paid Massachusetts income and capital gains taxes for that year. The article has been revised to correct that error. The author apologizes to Mitt Romney, to HuffingtonPost and to his readers for this error. It remains an unknown question whether Mitt Romney indeed satisfied the legal requirements as resident when he voted for Scott Brown.

Mitt Romney voted for Scott Brown in the special Massachusetts election to fill the seat of the late Ted Kennedy (D-MA).

He listed his residence as the unfinished basement of his son's home in Belmont, MA.

Whether the elder Romneys were legal residents of Massachusetts at the time is unknown. If he released his Massachusetts taxes for the same year he released his federal taxes, we would know.

We do know that he also had a home in New Hampshire. Why might he want to live in New Hampshire? Because New Hampshire has no capital gains or income taxes. So, the Mittster parked some of his money in the Cayman Islands, some in Switzerland, and parked himself in New Hampshire, all to avoid taxes.

Nonetheless, Mitt allegedly voted in the Scott Brown election. Ann probably did too.

To release his 2010 Masschusetts tax returns would settle the question about whether he committed voter fraud.

And, we all know how deeply concerned Republicans are about voter fraud, don't we?

He also doesn't want it to get out that his son Tagg's investment firm was involved with the Stanford ponzi scheme that bilked investors out of $8.5 billion. Tagg used $10 million of Mitt's money to get in on the ponzi scheme which defrauded and bankrupted many senior citizens. As soon as Allen Stanford was convicted, Tagg's name immediately disappeared (as did several of his partners' names) from the investment firm's website. Check out the Solamere Advisors of Charlotte, NC, and the Allen Stanford ponzi scheme. It's an eyeopener.

This article is awash in false statements. Romney pays tax on his earnings held in non-US places. It's on his 2010 tax return which he has revealed. How does Huffpo let this guy print anything?

Also -- Romney gave $6mil in charity to Joe Biden's bupkis.

Little things like voter fraud and tax evasion won't deter Mitt Romney...after all...it's his TURN to be President

In Nov. His thoughts will be turned 180 degrees

I just hope the rest of him is turned 180 degrees in November, so he can aim to go somewhere else.

Rachel Maddow deserves the credit for surfacing this initially. No one had linked it to Romney's refusal to show his tax returns from 2010 and 2009. I think this is at least one reason. The other will be all kinds of Cayman Islands and other "exotic" financial manipulations.

Uhh... here's Romney's 2010 return. It's published on the internet via Washington Post. What are you and this article talking about? He also reports and pays tax on all assets held outside the US. Also gives $6mil to charity (contrast to about zero for Joe Biden).
What a joke, you and this article.

Now that is an interesting story to pursue.. and it even sounds plausible. Myth Romney exposed...

VOTE OUT THE GOP CARPETBAGGERS IN NOVEMBER...SEND THEM HOME AND SEND A STRONG MESSAGE FROM THE MIDDLE CLASS THAT WE ARE NOT FOR SALE, NOR ARE WE HERE TO MAKE THE RICH EVEN MORE RICH.

Something tells me regardless of if Romney did commit voter fraud (which seems highly likely as he apparently used the unfinished basement of his son as his address...and was unlikely actually living there) that nothing will happen from it and most of the media won't bother touching it. Kind of ironic considering all the attempts by Republicans to 'end' voter fraud recently

or he could have done what many Democratic politicians do, they invest in municipal bonds. Do you know why? because they are taxed at 0%.

And can you ask why Obama refuses to release anything regarding his past. Passport info, school records, LSAT scores, classes taken and grades while attending Harvard and Columbia, medical records, etc.. he is as transparent as a brick, but you people keep believing his BS

Interesting .... if true, and I hope you are right. Could be the tip of the iceberg for what is to be learned in those tax returns, if and when we ever get to see them.

Thank you, thank you, for REAL investigative reporting.
How can we elect a fraudster voter to the highest office in the land??????
I know, Rick Scott is a medicare fraudster, and he's the governor of Florida, but this is Voter Fraud.
If the GOP voter registration restrictions were in place in MA, would Mitt have been able to vote???
02:22 PM on 04/20/2012
Rather then speculate about an issue of voter fraud, why not:
• call the Town Clerk in Belmont to ask why the Romney's were allowed to vote,
• ask the town's three member Registrars of Voters why he was allowed to vote, and
• call the bluest of blue dog democrats in Massachusetts, Secretary of State Bill Galvin why he hasn't begun an investigation in the two years since this information has been known.
Three phone calls and you'll get your answer. That is, if you want an answer.

Mitt did release his 2010 tax returns and filed an extension to his 2011 tax returns. However the real reason he will not release more of his back tax returns is probably because he didn't pay taxes in 2008-2009 during the peak of the recession.

Very interesting. But I guess when you model yourself on the etch a sketch, you are never the same person 2 days in a row.

Obviously he won't. Hence the ridiculous charade last January when he "released" his 2011 returns under campaign pressure and has now filed for an extension. He had no intention of filing the return he released; he was lying then and is lying now.

This is not primarily about tax fraud, but about voter fraud.
[From what I know about the Helmsley case, there was a bit of overkill--she paid more than $50M in taxes in the year she was accused of tax fraud of about $1M. There was an effort to create a terrible public view of her--which may have been true, who knows--so they could make an example of her].
