A Welcoming Sign to Immigrants in the South

Posted: 12/20/11 07:03 AM ET

They say there is nothing like Southern hospitality in making folks feel welcomed and included. But lately for immigrants of all stripes, this hasn't been the general feeling from states like Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. The sentiment towards immigrants and Latinos in general has been anything but Southern Comfort; despite the millions of dollars these groups contribute to the economies of these states. Now North Carolina is considering similar local immigration enforcement laws that will disrupt business, tear families apart, and generally try to stop the growth of Latinos in the state. But even as Republican state legislators meet in a special committee to plot their move against unauthorized immigrants specifically, and Latinos in general, a different view is emerging.

Perhaps it's because North Carolina has always been seen as the "Upper South," the intelligentsia of the South, and has worked hard not to be seen as too kin to that other Carolina, let's remember North Carolina went blue in the last election, a new campaign was launched this week to welcome immigrants and change the sentiment, which seems so prevalent in the South.

Uniting NC this week unveiled new billboards featuring smiling, comfortable immigrant families across the state with the idea to put a human face on immigrants and immigration. Standing in front of the first billboard of a Muslim family in downtown Raleigh, Kristin Collins, the executive director of Uniting NC said, "We want to tie this with what is happening in Alabama and other states, the laws they have passed, and the effect that has divided the community. We didn't want to see North Carolina go down that same path."

WATCH: Promotional Video for Uniting NC

The campaign is statewide and will feature three billboards, two in Raleigh, one in Durham and four digital billboards across the state showing happy Latino and Muslim families. The group raised $3,500 from 250 people who donated their money towards creating the billboards. Collins said they participated in "crowdfunding" online where people could make contributions to meet their goals. Much of the funding came from faith-based groups in the area to counter the negative rhetoric of immigrants in America today, including unauthorized immigrants.
Uniting NC is one of 19 state affiliates and is part of a national movement led by Atlanta-based Welcoming America, that works to build understanding between natives and new immigrants.

"We've watched states like Alabama and Arizona be torn apart by fear and anger about immigrants," said Rabbi Eric Solomon of Beth Meyer Synagogue in Raleigh. "Here in North Carolina we have an opportunity to do better than that."

Solomon was joined by Rev. Diane Faires of St. Paul's Christian Church in Raleigh and Fiaz Fareed, outreach coordinator at the Islamic Association of Raleigh to "welcome the stranger" during this holiday season.

But even as Uniting NC was unveiling the new billboards, a special committee of Republican state legislators was meeting to decide what kind of state laws they could pass that would match their colleagues in other Southern states. This despite the fact that the U.S. Supreme Court decided this week to take up the constitutionality of Arizona's controversial SB 1070 law. It might be wise to wait until the Court has made a determination on the legality of that law in June. That would make sense but you never know.

Collins said that Uniting NC is not a lobbying group and doesn't want to engage in the political fight over local laws aimed at unauthorized immigrants and others. "There are a lot of other groups that work on lobbying," she said. "We try to work on the human side, on presenting immigrants as human beings."

That comes through the smiling faces on the billboards but doesn't show what immigrants in North Carolina do or how they really live. Why not present what immigrants, Latino immigrants in particular are doing in North Carolina? Images of stooped workers in the fields picking tomatoes, blueberries, or cucumbers might have a greater impact. At least a more honest one. Or, an image of workers in the many poultry processing plants that dot the landscape might also humanize these immigrant workers. Collins said that they are looking to do something more edgy in the future with the billboards. But for now, for the holidays they wanted to present a welcoming image of immigrants.

Emilio Vicente agrees. A college student, Vicente came out to see the billboard. "The South is known for its hospitality. I think this is great because it shows North Carolina is welcoming to immigrants."

That's true at least until someone takes out his paintball gun. Collins said she's not worried about that and will face that issue if it happens. "The billboards are pretty high up," she said. "It would be hard to do."

I just created a petition entitled The President of the United States: Investigate Consular Bias and Discrimination in Africa , because I care deeply about this very important issue.

I'm trying to collect 100 signatures, and I could really use your help.

This woman doesn't speak for the entire South. She lives in a neighborhood surrounded by an 8ft fence with a nightwatchman. My house is watched by a 357 and a rabid dog. You aren't welcome!

Don't worry. North Carolina is picking up the other states rejects. We have seen an influx of license plates from SC, AL, GA. Of course our Medicaid program, food stamps, ECt will need an infusion of tax payer dollars. Our system was strained before this and now will cost the people of NC another $100,000,000.00 dollars year.
You know what we all need to do is renounce our citizian ship, become Hispanic and live the American dream promised to us by our government.

I don't remember the government promising us the American Dream. I was told if you worked hard, obeyed the law, and lived a Christian life, you could have the American Dream. Key word could. But having to pay for 48million welfare checks every month, unemployment checks every week, insurance for illegals, I don't think I can afford to take a lunch break much less live the American Dream. I'm to busy working.

We all hate drunk drivers, even me as an an illegal immigrant hate them. It saddens me that people have to mix drunk criminal illegals with hard-working illegal immigrants who only want a better life. I took at the memorial website and most of them are car-related accidents, those are the most common, but even if they were legally in the country it doesn't mean they wouldn't have driven drunk. I'm sorry for your loss, but don't classify all of us like that.

Really, who cares that a mexican neighbor helped a southern neighbor. I think it is great to be kind, polite etc,. However, the point is not helping out it is: if you are illegal get out. Period. What is the question here? Do you realize these same people who are documented are taking jobs from teens to men who lose their jobs through layoffs. If I came to another country, I would have paper work, I would absolutely know the language (illegals and legals take up to 20 years to learn English, and that's if they want to) and I would learn and respect the culture. All I've seen is: get over the boader and get what you can (medical, schooling, welfare, housing etc.). Oh, by the way if "I" illegal" get sick trying to cross over without food or water, I'll sue the USA. So many options for the illegals. If these illegals would come over the way everyone of our grandparents did LEGALLY, they would not encounter the attitudes and problems they do. People better wake up to what is happening to our country and stop making it look as if the UScitizens are creating the problems.

The only reason your grandparents came here legally was because they were the ones who made the laws. So do you want the currently illegal immigrants to come in the same way your grandparents came in? Lets see what your grandparents did... they invaded the Eastern side of the US, they killed many natives and pushed them into small reservations, then they made laws making everyone legal.

So are you saying you would feel better if the illegal aliens came in, killed Americans, and pushed them into reservations and made themselves legal just like your grandparents did it? Times change and you can't relate something that happened hundreds of years ago to something that is happening today.

I am a Mexian American and my Children are as well. Their skin is the tell tale sign. A color I would never take off if I could. When I was young and worked at fruit ranch for summer and the owner had the brilliant idea that we (Mexicans only) should wear a card to say whether we're legal or not. I almost got fired that day. Because I told him where he could shove his card. I will never carry a damn card saying I'm from anywhere. If we have to wear one everyone should. There was a time when the USA would send a telegram to Mexico to get Mexicans for help whether it be with the railroad, agriculture all dependent on what they needed. They were given passports and fined if they left back to Mexico (ironic). My Father has always believed in education and I'm proud to have a cousin in congress. I have a Nephew in the Marines, and several neices and nephews attending college. It makes me proud. Yes we belong here before anyone starts with it your ignorant comments. I don't have to prove to any of you your battle is with yourselves. http://www.pbs.org/kpbs/theborder/history/timeline/17.html

Kerao,

You are so offensive with your remarks. Just state your opinion and move on. No one has accused you of anything. Our complaints are with ILLEGALS only, so why are you tied in a knot?? It's a little confusing unless maybe you or someone living with you are not. Otherwise, what's with the crazy talk?

There are people here that should not be deported. We have a neighbor that has been over 20 years has paid taxes and is a law abiding citizen. His oldest son is 18 owns his own home and has two other children and married. But is getting deported for speeding. That's my crazy talk. They treat us all the same here. I'm sorry. I did get on a tangent. I apologiz. But it's happening alot here in Idaho. All my family is here I've been in Mexico once on vacation. I wouldn't know how to live there.

Who are these people who are so willing to give our country away? During WWII these people would have offered citizenship to the Nazis so we could all live in peace. These are the type of people who supported the British and England against the colonies and there were many of them. These people would be in support of a North American Union if any thing like that came about.

We need a union of people, to look outside the box of the normal. To actually listen to the points of view of the people and realize it. Not this hypocritical system where these people do as they please and treat the people they pretend to serve like trash.

This is very sad that a small group of people are over looking the damage that illegals are doing to this country. To say that NC welcomes these people who cause violence, think that the taxpayers owe them for services, take jobs...Understand they are breaking the law being here, and anyone helping them in my opinion should be sent back to mexico with them.

Speak English,
Absolutely, correct. I along with millions are fed up with the government's attitude of look the other way. Let them live in a state that is being overwhelmed with mexicans who are raping our systems such as our schools, medical, welfare, jobs, food stamps etc. It goes on every day, all day long. So the next time someone you know cannot get a job; think about who has that job. It was the sherrif in AZ who first begged for help from the Federal government to help rid his state of the illegals, but they did nothing for almost 10 years. It was then this sherrif started to take it upon himself to keep them in enclosures with pink stripped jail uniforms on to humiliate them to going back. Some did and some did not, thus the rules got tougher and the climb over to AZ slowed down, but now the other states that turned their eye are now suffering just like AZ did years ago. People need to wake up!
04:58 PM on 12/22/2011
Yeah, I've noticed that all the illegals are jamming the freeways with their BMWs, and forcing us into wars and hiding the finances, and it was Pancho Villa who crashed Lehman Bros.
08:42 PM on 12/22/2011
maybe you should consider the underlying causes of them coming here in the first place. and i think to imply that illegals cause violence any more than any other group of people is absurd. taking jobs? which ones? the ones nobody else wants? they do pay taxes, but as illegals they're not going to benefit from the taxes they put in. your points smell of blind racism and ignorance.

Immigration is not the issue, illegal immigration is the problem.

Illegal immigration costs the US tax payers 100 billion a year according to ABC News.

bidribob,

Correct. We all come from an immigrant family. I agree that millions of people are fed up with all the illegals in this country who are now making sure they get here so the women can have their babies here for citizenship. Now if an illegal dies crossing over to here from lack of water or food, USA can expect to be sued. This has gotten WAY out of hand and the government needs to stop turning a blind eye as they have for decades. These illegals get free school (god forbid they learn English), free medical treatment, free food help, free housing etc. It is a burden on all US citizens.
09:26 AM on 12/21/2011
When I was sick I was told that I should refinance my house to pay for the $50,000 medical bill. I chose not to have the procedure since I would be 85 when I paid it off. If I was "poor" or illegal and had no resources, I would be given the procedure for free with no thought of ever having to pay for the care received, either now, or in the future.

That's no secret. Along with free food, free housing, free medical, and free education. It goes on and on to the things US gives them free for breaking the law.
