My Letter to Obama

What's Your Reaction:

Dear President Obama,

It seems that the theme emanating from the White House is "Eat, Pray, Be Disappointed." And yet, whenever I do feel disappointed, I always realize that the alternative was John McCain, with Sarah Palin just one Halloween "Boo!" away from the presidency, and then I always feel a sense of relief.

Actually, you've kept one big campaign promise -- to send more troops to Afghanistan -- so I guess we can't fault you for that. In fact, according to Bob Woodward in Obama's Wars, all you want to do now is get out of Afghanistan. Well, why don't you just do what Osama bin Laden did? Cross over to Pakistan. Since we bribe Pakistan to be our ally, you'd think they would never consider harboring bin Laden, though they reek with empathy when our outsourced drones drop those bombs.

Also, during the campaign you said you believe that the legality of same-sex marriage should be decided by the states, but that you personally think marriage should be between a man and a woman. Which is exactly the position that caused Miss USA, Carrie Prejean, to have her crown revoked.

And another thing. You promised to end the raids on medical marijuana dispensaries, but they haven't stopped. Here's how I understand Washington. America's puritanical political process serves as a buffer between the status quo and the force of evolution. For instance, in order to get Republican votes for the children's healthcare bill, Democrats agreed to fund $28 million to their abstinence-only program.

And, during your own campaign, you admitted, in the context of health-care reform, that the multinational insurance conglomeration is so firmly entrenched that you would be unable to dispense with it. So there would have to be compromises.

Now, what with the compromises made to help passage of Prop. 19, amnesty becomes the single-payer system of marijuana reform, and growing your own pot becomes the public option. Meanwhile, as long as any government can arbitrarily decide which drugs are legal and which drugs are illegal, then anyone serving time for a nonviolent drug offense is a political prisoner.

In his new book, Woodward writes about Colin Powell's status as an adviser to you. Referring to his previous book, Plan of Attack, the New York Times then reported that "Secretary of State Colin Powell disputed Woodward's account... He said that he had an excellent relationship with Vice President Dick Cheney, and that he did not recall referring to officials at the Pentagon loyal to Cheney as the 'Gestapo office.'"

Who among us would be unable to recall uttering such an epithet? Powell later apologized for it. He has also changed his mind about gays in the military. In my capacity as a stand-up satirist, I used to conduct an imaginary dialogue with Powell.

"General Powell, you're the first African-American to be head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and you come from the tradition of a military family. So you know that blacks were once segregated in the Army because the other soldiers might feel uncomfortable if blacks slept in the same barracks. And now that's what they say about gays, that other soldiers might feel uncomfortable about gays sleeping in the same barracks."

"Well, you have to understand, we never told anybody we were black."

And, Mr. President, that was the forerunner of the same "Don't ask, don't tell" policy that you promised to rescind, only you haven't been acting like a Commander-in-Chief. All you have to do is sign such a directive. Those who serve in the military are trained to follow orders. If they can follow orders to kill fellow humans, they can certainly follow orders to treat openly gay service people with total equality.

Not only is the current guideline counterproductive, but also this display of trickle-down immorality must, on some level of consciousness, serve as a contributing factor to enabling the anti-gay bullying and torturing of innocent victims. I know, you don't want to take a chance that retracting the policy would interfere with your reelection. You've made the point that you don't want Mitt Romney to win in 2012 and turn around all the good things you've accomplished.

Incidentally, Romney had wanted to overturn Roe vs. Wade, yet, in 1994, when he was running for the Senate, he came out in favor of choice for women. However, freelance journalist Suzan Mazur revealed that he admitted to Mormon feminist Judith Dushku that "the Brethren" in Salt Lake City told him he could take a pro-choice position, and that in fact he probably had to in order to win in a liberal state like Massachusetts. Pandering trumps religious belief.

If gays and lesbians have waited this long for basic fairness, they might as well just wait for the next election. If you win, then would you kindly do immediately what you believe is right, constitutionally and in your heart, and end this injustice? The ultimate irony is that gays in the military are fighting and being maimed and dying unnecessarily, all supposedly to protect the freedom that their own country is denying them.

Sincerely,
Paul Krassner

Thanks Paul - one of your better articles. Couldn't agree more it is time to do a "Truman" and tell the military to get over themselves and end "don't ask don't tell."

Obama has been planning a rightward shift after the elections so I don't know why some of you think voting in these elections would protect his "accomplishments." He already plans to throw what little there are away in his insane pursuit of "bipartisanship" and corporate sponsorship.

Here's Obama's Federal Housing Administration Commissioner David Stevens yesterday on the Foreclosure scandal: "We believe freezing foreclosures for all banks in all states, whether we have reason to believe them to be in error or not, is simply not the prudent step to take in this fragile housing market." (i.e. we're not going to prosecute)

Here's David Axelrod hoping that more Repug seats means more bipartisanship: http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/10/10/white.house.gop.congress/index.html.

Here are the links showing his plans to gut Social Security to be seen as "serious":

Why should Obama give a damn about us gays? He knows we can't vote for the Party of No and our only option to express our disappointment with him is to not vote, which is like voting for a Republican. Let's face it. He's a big disappointment to the gay community and there's very little we can do about it, short of not giving our money to the Democrats or the Republicans.
09:35 PM on 10/11/2010
And that's exactly what we should do about it. Non-action has power too. Untils Obama and his drones get it through their thick heads that they won't win without us, they can keep flailing for all I care.

Carrie Prejean was never Miss USA. She was runner up, but was Miss CA. Her crown was revoked because she breached her contract by refusing to do interviews and appearances. This was the most disjointed and rambling "letter" I've ever read. If the majority of your paragraphs are single sentences you might have a problem. I had no idea where you were going with your rant until the last sentence.

Can someone tell me why it is that minorites have been the ones who have been hit the hardest during this recession yet it is white people doing the most complaining, running around with their hair on fire? Serious question....a majority of you sat in silence for god knows how long now that the country has gone off the deep end its too late to complain now. Also, DADT was in place for 17 years..lets stop acting like it was invented yesturday and by the current President. He will pass it or overturn it the way he wants to, not the way you all dictate to him to.

Its funny how some on the left can whine about what promises Obama hasn't kept so far with their pent up agendas, yet fail to show that he has kept far more promises then he has made so far. Do some of you think you deserve a pat on the back because you decided to elect a bi-racial man after the country hit rock bottom? Get real.

He hasn't kept most of the promises he made, and we're mad at him for not pushing to repeal DADT because that's one of the things he promised he'd do. One of his many failed promises.

Here you will see that he has kept far more promises then not. No matter how many times some of you repeat the same thing over and over doesn't make it fact. And you folks didn't even push for the repeal, you basically gave your one vote and sat back wanting Obama to do everything by himself knowing what he was up against. The Tea Party has outshined you all because at least they fight even when their back is up against the wall, the left is cocky and thinks they dont have to do anything but sit around on the internet and complain 24/7. Obama has set the stage for DADT to get repealed, some of you are just mad because he is not jumping when you say jump. Wether it get passed by law, which is what he wants to do or he has to sign an executive order I am sure it will get repealed in due time...had you all held the previous Presidents to the standards you hold this one both you and this country would be in better shape then what its in today. Like I said, you dont deserve a pat on the back simply because you placed one vote for a bi-racial man after the country hit rock bottom.
09:30 PM on 10/11/2010
He hasn't and you're right, but talking to a bot is like talking to the wall. Remember, they WANT to believe their own lies. No amount of fact or logic can shake them from their wonderfully insane dream.

Thank you. But none of them want to point that out because all they care about is their own pent up agendas. Thats why I cant feel too sorry for some people on the left who complain 24/7 because they haven't done anything but sit on the sidelines and watch Obama get completely slandered by the right wing in this country for their causes.
04:37 PM on 10/11/2010
Why Obama is more concerned about appeasing his/our enemies than fixing the terrible things those same people to this country, is beyond me. A two-term president who does nothing to help this country is not preferable to a one-term tsunami of bold ideas and initiatives. we were ready for boldness, all we got was hope.

If you were ready for boldness then you folks should have acted like it. Im confused at what some on the left thought they were going to get...did some of you think that after decades of greed and ignorance the "powers that be" in this country were just going to roll over and play along with the "hope and change" meme..no, they were going to fight tooth and nail. All some on the left have done is complain yet have sat on the sidelines while the Tea Party outshines you all. When some of you get out in the streets and fight for your causes the way they are, then you can talk.

The fact that America is allowing openly gay service members to remain in the military long enough to complete their tours of duty before throwing them out pretty much tells us everything we need to know about America and its citizens.
03:50 PM on 10/11/2010
With the exception of core Obama Administration loyalists, most politically engaged elites have reached the same conclusions: the White House is in over its head, isolated, insular, arrogant and clueless about how to get along with or persuade members of Congress, the media, the business community or working-class voters ... Mark Halperin
04:29 PM on 10/11/2010
Halperin is a conservative tool:

"Conservatives forever braying about a liberal bias in the press received a big boost last month when Mark Halperin, director of ABC's political unit, took to the airwaves with the reddest of Bush partisans -- talkers Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and Hugh Hewitt -- to voice his heated agreement that the mainstream press treats Republicans unfairly.

Confirming their longstanding fears, Halperin insisted that reporters are "overwhelmingly liberal," they "hate the military," are "blind" to their bias, and should use the closing weeks of the campaign season to "prove" their worth to right-wingers. Suddenly, instead of conservatives working the refs -- badgering journalists with complaints of bias in hopes they would get the benefit of the doubt next time there was a close call in the newsroom -- it was one of the refs (Halperin) working the refs. Can Mark namd one administration that wouldn't be in over its head with the mess this WH was delt? The media is funny, they are a media who helped sell this country the Iraq war, sat in silence the previous decade while close to no job growth was happening then have the nerve to turn around and attack anyone at this point. America has turned into a joke and is getting exposed for what it is and not what it markets itself as being and thats what some of you are really mad about. If the business communtity, conress the media and working white class voters knew what to do this country wouldn't be in this mess in the first place so stop trying to pin Obama's face on your failures as a nation.
