Some say big-time sports is just a money-grubbing enterprise designed to suck the life - and life savings - out of the average fan. It is, but it's so much more. It's also the way society tests its tolerance for rampant drug abuse and deviant sexual behavior. Not to mention gun-related violence and dog fighting. But perhaps no issue has dominated sports the way race has. For the past fifty years, race and sports proceeded according to plan. Except for the times when it didn't proceed according to plan (see societal, narrow-minded racism, et al.).
