No More Mr. Nice Guy

"The McCain campaign continues to level dishonest attacks on Barack Obama's integrity and patriotism," [foreign policy adviser Susan] Rice said, adding that Americans were tired of "Karl Rove's say anything, do anything politics." Rice also accused McCain of trying to "mislead the American people in order to obscure his own record of failed policy judgments." -- Seth Colter Walls, The Huffington Post, August 20

They "continue to level dishonest attacks"? Well, maybe that's because it continues to work, while the only thing you disgracefully spineless wimps seem able to do in response is calmly observe that they're doing it. Americans are sick of Karl Rove's scum? Really? They sure seem to keep guzzling it down. McCain's trying to "mislead the American people"? Oh, no! Say it ain't so!

Four years ago Americans were desperate to be rid of George W. Bush. Not only could the Democratic convention have safely eviscerated him, the country was waiting for it to happen. Instead, the party offered barely a peep of criticism and wasted four days lionizing John Kerry's Vietnam service, then sat there helplessly gaping as Rove and his ghouls turned that service into a liability, allowing the race to be close enough for them to steal another election and give the worst American to ever hold power four more years to continue his devastation of the country.

And now, those four years later, Americans DESPISE this hijacker of the presidency like they've never personally hated a politician. The nation's contempt is the only thing Bush has ever honestly earned. He is loathed for his incompetence, his ignorance, and his arrogance, and John McCain is wearing a neon sign saying "MORE OF THE SAME." If that doesn't make the Democrats - not just Barack Obama, but dozens if not hundreds of his surrogates - feel safe enough to go on a rampage against those who are destroying the future of the country as we've known it, then please, let's stop pretending the party stands for anything. If that Democratic convention next week isn't a Republican bloodbath leaving the violent nasty prick who publicly called the wife he cheated on his first wife with a "cunt" writhing on the floor, then it's way past time for the party to go the way of the Whigs.

This isn't a game. It's life or death for America as we know it, and if that isn't worth fighting for as viciously as necessary, then the wrong people are on the front lines. If Obama can't work up some genuine outrage about what's happened to this country over the past eight years and demonstrate a willingness -- no, an eagerness -- to do whatever it takes to stop this grotesquerie from continuing for another four, then maybe the superdelegates should take it away from him and give it to Hillary. Say what you will about the Clintons, but they're killers, and nothing less is needed now.

Hey, Barack. I seem to remember you saying, "If they bring knives, we'll bring guns." Well, buddy, unholster those fucking guns already and start firing. Otherwise, stop wasting our time, stop taking our money and stop raising our false hopes.

I agree with much here; but the Clintons have become neocon insiders the past 8 yearsand would change nothing.Right now, Obama's it - and I sure hope he has cards to play after th convention.

I couldn't agree more with Paul Slansky.
Democrats would also benefit from showing genuine outrage at how the GOP twisted government's traditional role, and by doing that DIFFERENTIATE themselves from Republicans. Reject the cynics' view that both parties are alike, which leads to apathy and disgust with politics. Be aggressive and Democrats should win by a landslide this year.

"Say what you will about the Clintons, but they're killers, . "

That is precisely why I don't want the Clinton's in again. No More Republican lite.

I do want Obama to get tough but not nasty like the Clintons. There is more then enough truth to slam McCain with without using Carl Roves play book.

"Say what you will about the Clintons, but they're killers, and nothing less is needed now. " - but they lost the nomination. Obama has tried to stay above the filth and so far, that has worked for him. At some point, like with the Clintons, Americans will realise what McCain is about and what Obama has to offer - a decent, wise, and intelligent Presideet for our country.

Ever since Obama turned around on FISA it has been downhill. Up until that time I made six donations to his campaign. In the past two month, I have made one donations. Until he shows he can stand up to McCain, no mas.

We are still dealing with the Clintons and their supporters. We must get the party unified! Obama 08!

"Changing horses in the middle of the stream is not a good idea." I am an Obama supporter and realize the desperate need to elect a democrat. This has been a very exhuasting campaign, and I do believe that once Obama can put the Clinton situation to rest, and once we are unified. That we can move forward. This is all about race...and there are some that will never vote for him. Hopfully those people will take a stand one way or the other at the convention. Obama has weathered the storm, he has the ability to be "Commander in Chief." I am just waiting for the convention to take place and be over...and we go from there with what we have. Obama 08!

Is there a POLITICAL equivalent for the concept of "you put one of ours in the hospital and we put two of yours in the morgue"? If so, Obama and his V.P. need to figure it out really quickly and implement it so fast that the those crooks and liars won't know what hit them!

Well said! I hate George Bush. I can not even look at him when he makes one of his rare television appearances. I do not believe in my heart McCain can be as bad, but I am afraid of more of the same. The article is very right. Democrats must take the gloves off and not be afraid to throw stones, especially after the disaster that was Bush. Republicans are going to mock Obama as they mocked Kerry. We must mock Republican goals, leadership, and their awful campaign tactics.

Have courage. I've been worried too, but Obama's started defining McCain as the elitist opportunist we all know him to be.
Todays attacks on McCain's wealth and false economic optimism in the face of so much economic misery is just the start. McCain is so flawed and open to honest attack it's not funny.
Ooooh, the Repubs are threatening to bring up the evil Reverend Wright! Sorry, losers. That train has left the station. Oooooh, Obama has 4 million dollars. Yes, but he's not trying to shut everybody else out of the American dream. He's not voting AGAINST veterans. He wants everyone to have affordable health insurance!
Man, McCain is just toast now!

Very well written article and I think most loyal democrats are thinking the same thing right now. It's scary to see Barack dropping in the polls and it looks like the same thing happening all over again. For once I would like to see the democrats stand up and fight for what we believe in as a united party. The strongest asset that republicans have is unity. They deeply believe in their principles and see the big picture. John McCain has never been a favorite of the conservatives, in fact many neocons hate the man. BUT, they hate what the dems stand for even more so they will support their candidate. It's time that democrats get behind the petty bickoring about the primaries and look at the big picture. John McCain is against everything we stand for and even worst, he would keep us on the same path of destruction that we are on now. Imagine 2-3 more Antonin Scalias on the supreme court.

The Democrats are going to have to simply lower ourselves to their level on the campaign trail. But we have to start doing it on the OFFENSIVE rather than wait for them to strike first. The core values of our country - liberty, equality, justice - are at stake.

We have to negatively attack him harder than ever before...relentlessly. Nothing is out-of-bounds. McCain - an elitist philanderer who hates women and is too old to be in office. I don't care about "staying above the fray." Question his senility and temper. How about this..."It's Saturday and there's a crisis in the world. But McCain is taking the weekend off to catch up on his rest..." Or..."McCain said he supports the reinstatement of the draft...Do you want to send your child to war in the next four years?"

Go after McCain's so-called "strengths" (I know, oxymoron)...the economy and foreign policy.

Economy: he's voted repeatedly for bills supporting Bush's economic policy. He admitted that he's no expert on the economy. Pound him repeatedly on this.

Foreign policy: he voted for one of the biggest foreign policy errors in a generation - Iraq. Enough said.

He has even taken on "energy" as a strength! But he's been in Washington for 30 years, and he hasn't done squat about energy. And NOW he's the one who will fix it all? Why is no one questioning this?!

The Democrats have been playing nice for too long.

The dems have not graciously kept Leiberman around, they need him because they don't have a true majority. He is probably the most despised ex democrat right now.

Paul, Please! They'll be mild-mannered. This is the party of the Pelosi compromise: (1) give them everything they want; (2) put a bow on it; and (3) say you won because they didn't like the color of the bow.

It's not clear that the Democratic party didn't go the way of the Whig some time ago. The current Democrat party appears to be propped up by Republican interests so that they can claim there's real opposition.

Personally, anger does not bother me. It indicates passion and belief in something. The Democrats refuse to get angry and it shows in their beliefs. Lieberman stabs them in the back and they graciously keep him around, Bush destroys this country and Pelosi takes impeachment off the table, congress issues subpoenas and Rove sticks his tongue out at them. On and on, over and over these kinds of scenarios play out publically and the Democrats do nothing, not even defend themselves.

Why vote for a Democrat? Certainly not because they will defend you and most certainly not because of their belief in the Constitution or rule of law, do not vote for a democrat because they have a spine and will stand up against tyranny. Whats left? The only reason to vote for a Democrat is because they are not Republicans. Sad but true.
