Three Questions that Bob Schieffer Probably Won't Ask John McCain, But He Should

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

"Senator McCain, you used to say that the main thing you were looking for in a running mate was the ability to take over as president, if necessary, on Day One. Given how many people there are in government that clearly meet that criterion, how do you justify picking someone who so many of the most intelligent and respected members of your own party believe clearly does not? Your campaign slogan is Country First, sir. Can you tell the American people exactly how you were putting Country First when you chose a congenitally dishonest, proudly ignorant, cold-blooded demagogue with no presidential qualifications whatsoever to sit just one of your 72-year-old cancer-ridden heartbeats away from running the country in these spectacularly perilous times of almost unprecedented economic and international crises?"

"Senator McCain, your campaign has spent the last ten days impugning your opponent's character. We've seen Sarah Palin doing it, we've seen your wife Cindy doing it, and we've even seen you doing it yourself. Well, there he is right across the table from you. Is there anything you want to say to Senator Obama about Bill Ayers or Reverend Wright or Tony Rezko? Because it would be nice if he could respond to these allegations and insinuations and put this utter bullshit behind us so you could spend the next twenty days explaining to the American people why they should vote for you instead of scaring them about why they shouldn't vote for him."

"Senator McCain, your campaign rallies lately have become forums for foaming-at-the-mouth cretins who are so certain that your opponent is a terrorist that some have actually shouted out, "Kill him!" and "Off with his head!" Given the nation's history of intolerance against those perceived to be somehow different - be it by virtue of sexual orientation, religion, or race - can you tell the American people how you're putting Country First by fanning the fires of hatred and why they shouldn't hold you and your rabid running mate personally responsible if those fires explode into violence?"

Okay, I know Bob Schieffer's not going to say any of the above, but I urge anyone who knows him to press him to find some less prosecutorial way to ask these questions, because John McCain's efforts to make Barack Obama's character the deciding factor in the election have served only to shine a spotlight on his own galaxies-beyond-shame cravenness, and he deserves to be called out on it to his face. I'd be more than happy to do it but no one's going to let me near him, so I'm dependent on Bob.

Oh, and here's a campaign haiku:

Was that a dust mote?
No, merely the remains of
John McCain's "honor."

"Senator McCain, you used to say that the main thing you were looking for in a running mate was the ability to take over as president, if necessary, on Day One. Given how many people there are in gov...

How about

Which person caused more harm to Americans, a Vietnam War protestor in the 70's who exploded some bombs or a banker who caused 20,000 people to lose life savings and cost the government 2 billion.

I would like him to ask:
"What is your opinion of Joe McCarthyism and 'red-baiting'? Do you think smearing your opponent with 'guilt by association' is an acceptable and honorable tactic within politics?

Ask McCain why he calls out Acorn when Acorn was the one who reported the problem to the election commission and his own ties to this organization are at least as significant as Obama's, although that is mostly irrelevant. Acorn had money wasted from workers forging voter registrations to earn more money for doing less. That only means that those fake people won't be voting. Not helpful for Obama, I would assert. Now, the repubs will try to use this to prevent legitimate voters from voting, which smacks of the same tricks they have played in Florida, Ohio and New Mexico.

Several people now have clarified that it is Acorn that got shafted. They paid people to get other people registered and some of those who were to do this, were forging names to get paid more for doing less. Acorn does not benefit. These are phony names which means no one will actually show up to vote. This has been done before to raise suspicion and to cause unecessary tactics which end up being used to prevent legitimate voters from voting. Yes, this is another Repub ploy and another attempt on their part to cheat to win the election.

Senator McCain, is it true that Abraham Lincoln had a high, squeaky voice?

Senator McCain, you divorced your crippled first wife and immediately married Cindy whom, when you met her, was rich, blond, and twenty-five. Being as Cindy now looks fossilized, how old now is the future Mrs. McCain Three?

If CEO Smith exports two thousand jobs to India, and CEO Jones's company files for bankruptcy but he contributes to your campaign, which CEO should get the bigger income-tax reduction?

I'm scared about this debate. The moderator was dreadful during the Bush debates - he asked Bush sophmoric questions and Gore targeted, antagonisitc questions. Why should we expect him to be any different this time?

Great questions. I'll be listening for them. And for heck to freeze over.

Ayers and ACORN both need to be discussed during this debate! The Facts need to be brought out into the light! Will McCain chicken out and not say the accusations his campaign has been making about Obama? Will McCain say it himself and in public to Obama's face? If McCain does not say these accusations during the debate then McCain is a liar and a coward. McCain must also allow Obama to respond to these lies during the debate also!

What terrorism do you know that Obama has been involved in. If you don't know about any, then get off of the distraction, motivated by misguided politics.

Ayers and Acorn are like Whitewater, a lot of noise and no substance.

Alte Soldier, you just prove how easy it is to manipulate people.

When John McCain's health is discussed we never talk about diminished mental capacity. Anyone well into middle age has seen this stuff happen and what I'm seeing in McCain is a familiar sight. You don't have to be 90 to develop cognitive impairments that are age related, especially if you were tortured for 5 years.

I think this subject should be added to the conversation regarding Sarah Palin as VP.

One can only imagine Sarah and Todd Palin acting behind the scenes to raise doubts about his competence once they are in office.... up to and including lying about the contents of personal conversations. The stage for a silent coup would be set.

Ask McCain why he flip flopped on torture, abortion, immigration, and sought the support of the fringe right religious groups that he later had to reject and why he picked Palin, whose views are clearly not in line with how he has represented himself. I also like RIckO's question.

If Scheifer asked those questions he would be deemed the winner of the debate. Despite whatever answer or response the 2 candidates gave.

Absolutely! If the question is asked, as Obama knows full well how to do, to indicate the answer will be a public statement of McBlame's Obama can get the bloke in big trouble not only as a senator, but also a candidate for president. Lying can help us impeach! I want to hear the answer to:

"Senator McCain, fully tell me how long you knew Senator Palin, when you first met her, what were the circumstances of that meeting, and the dates and circumstances of all subsequent meetings, and what investigations (including by whom) enabled you to determine 'that woman' was qualified to not only act in your place, but be president of the United States?"

Hope he can wriggle outa that one, yo guys, Joe 6 packs, and hockey moms...

Palin has a public record, Obama has voted present in an attempt to avoid others from knowing his intentions.

Her problems with the trooper and the investigation were known of months before she was picked. And still, she was picked, I think to get the religious right vote.

It has been explained many times that voting present usually meant that he might have agreed with most of what he was voting on, but not completely. Once the issue was whittled down to something he could totally agree on & it was up for vote again, then he voted for or against it!

Timekeeper10 - check McCain's voting records...he wasn't there, period, for pages, and pages. He's getting paid to be a senator, but not "being a senator" or he wouldn't talk about the other senators as he's been doing, either. Regardless of "Party", McCain's compromised himself out the KAZOO. Methinks he's become a patsy to Palin, and "Cindy" - sad, sad, sad. Not because they're women, but they're plants.
