"Senator McCain, you used to say that the main thing you were looking for in a running mate was the ability to take over as president, if necessary, on Day One. Given how many people there are in government that clearly meet that criterion, how do you justify picking someone who so many of the most intelligent and respected members of your own party believe clearly does not? Your campaign slogan is Country First, sir. Can you tell the American people exactly how you were putting Country First when you chose a congenitally dishonest, proudly ignorant, cold-blooded demagogue with no presidential qualifications whatsoever to sit just one of your 72-year-old cancer-ridden heartbeats away from running the country in these spectacularly perilous times of almost unprecedented economic and international crises?"
"Senator McCain, your campaign has spent the last ten days impugning your opponent's character. We've seen Sarah Palin doing it, we've seen your wife Cindy doing it, and we've even seen you doing it yourself. Well, there he is right across the table from you. Is there anything you want to say to Senator Obama about Bill Ayers or Reverend Wright or Tony Rezko? Because it would be nice if he could respond to these allegations and insinuations and put this utter bullshit behind us so you could spend the next twenty days explaining to the American people why they should vote for you instead of scaring them about why they shouldn't vote for him."
"Senator McCain, your campaign rallies lately have become forums for foaming-at-the-mouth cretins who are so certain that your opponent is a terrorist that some have actually shouted out, "Kill him!" and "Off with his head!" Given the nation's history of intolerance against those perceived to be somehow different - be it by virtue of sexual orientation, religion, or race - can you tell the American people how you're putting Country First by fanning the fires of hatred and why they shouldn't hold you and your rabid running mate personally responsible if those fires explode into violence?"
Okay, I know Bob Schieffer's not going to say any of the above, but I urge anyone who knows him to press him to find some less prosecutorial way to ask these questions, because John McCain's efforts to make Barack Obama's character the deciding factor in the election have served only to shine a spotlight on his own galaxies-beyond-shame cravenness, and he deserves to be called out on it to his face. I'd be more than happy to do it but no one's going to let me near him, so I'm dependent on Bob.
Oh, and here's a campaign haiku:
Was that a dust mote?
No, merely the remains of
John McCain's "honor."

And they call themselves Christians. I can't imagine anything more anti-Christian than inciting violence and hatred, and obliterating someone's livelihood. McCain and his entire campaign are out of control and reckless.
Mavericks. WHAT A JOKE! They look like a bunch of 2nd graders run amok.
Bob Schieffer will stay as far away as possible from asking any PERTINENT questions such as these. Remember, Schieffer was the one (on his Face the Nation program) who chastized Gen. Wesley Clark for commenting that being a POW wasn't a requirement for the Presidency. I would expect all of Schieffer's questions to McCain to be prefaced with ... "Sen. McCain, as a former POW..."
With this being the final debate, Schieffer will do everything in his power to help his buddy McCain, similar to Stephanopolous' questions in the democratic debate.
here's a subset of the Ayers question:
Obama was 8 years old when Weather Underground bombed anything.
You were an adult, and a US Senator, when you tried to influence regulation of Keating.
What is the difference between the in-action of an innocent 8-year old, and a the action of a participating adult?
Oh come on now RichardBolen - that makes sense - and as we all know, the McCain campaign only deals in nonsense.
That's TOO sensical for the MSM and Bob Schieffer, don't ya know, you betcha ...
I say let them continue their incendiary rhetoric to the stupid and the racist - - at this point, that's all that's left in the Republican Party.
"Okay, I know Bob Schieffer's not going to say any of the above. . ."
No, but he can ask: "Why are you hiding Sarah Palin from the Press?
That's about as valid a question as any this election, and Max Blumenthal's reporting indicates why--she's a theocrat, dedicated to overturning the bill of rights;

You know what's really funny about the Ayers thing? He was trying to prevent more of our sons, fathers, brothers from suffering the fate of John McCain or worse. I know his methods were wrong, but Nix on was shu ting college students right around that time, no??
anyone notice the irony that mccain will be speaking at cape fear community college in north carolina in about an hour? just askin'.
The real tragedy is these questions aren`t being asked by the mainstream media. Palin is historically underqualified to be a vice presidential candidate and they have made this look like an Racist American Idol contest, instead of the election of two of the most powerful positions in the free world.
Nice haiku.
Another great column Paul. You actually almost caused me a cardiac arrest from the terror you raised in your posing of the first question.
Country First, Indeed!!!
Maybe Schieffer could ask McC*n how his associations with Singlaub, Liddy, and his buddy David ischell [sic] are different from Obama's meeting Ayers on the board of a Republican-owned foundation. Or how is kowtowing to Hagee and the Christian thuggery (you'd think they were North Vietnamese officers!) is different from Obama's attending Wright's church. Or whether he's gotten around to being baptized since he decided last year that he was a barefoot, Bible-clutching Baptist rather than snooty Episcopalian. Or whether he would be Ok with Megan's boyfriend calling her a... well, you know... in front of a TV camera.
The McCain camp has obviously given in to the forces of fear while Obama has remained faithful to hope and optimism. Lets hear some questions about the hope for the future. ................

Dugg for a few more idea's.
Here's the Face the Nation email. I don't know if it would help to send the link, though, as most of the media seems terrified to ask McCain any real questions.

A HISTORIC TICKET.... Now that Sarah Palin has been found to have abused her powers, violated state ethics, and lied about it, I did a little digging and found an interesting historical footnote.
The McCain/Palin ticket is the first in American history in which both candidates were found to have violated ethics standards before a national election.
McCain, of course, was admonished by Senate Ethics Committee "for exercising 'poor judgment' for intervening" with federal regulators on behalf of Charles Keating, as part of the infamous Keating Five sc@ndal.
And now McCain's running mate has also been found to have violated state ethics laws and abused the powers of her office, as part of the "Troopergate" sc@ndal. 10 republicans and 4 democrats started the investigation.
The nation has had 102 major-party tickets covering 51 presidential elections over more than two centuries. And we've never had a ticket in which both candidates on the same ticket were responsible for ethics violations before a national election. McCain/Palin is the first.
It makes the whole "reform" pitch a little more difficult, doesn't it?
No McCAIN/PALIN
I second.
