On a bridge in Pittsburgh, named for Puerto Rican baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, two countries came together to showcase their athleticism, share their cultures and make history. On a bridge in Pittsburgh, Cuban and American amateur boxers found an international stage and common ground. On a bridge in Pittsburgh, within eyesight of where the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers become one, a group of young men ages 11 to 26, opened the gate a little wider toward a positive relationship between Cuba and the U.S.

Duelo del Siglo (Duel of the Century) provided more than international exposure to the amateur Pittsburgh and Cuban boxers. The event provided a unique opportunity for U.S. and Cuban dignitaries to enjoy one another's company, as well as to interject a little friendly competition. And although one of the event's organizers, Michael Diven, a retired state representative, said the event was less about making a political statement, it did make a strong statement about diplomacy.

The memorable event was interrupted by rain and lightning. However, as soon as it was safe to return to the bridge the organizers and local officials allowed the young men to step back in the ring. So, the competition continued late into the night. The event, which was broadcast live in Cuba, featured 11 three round bouts. The 2,500 free tickets available to the public, were reportedly claimed within 11 minutes. The interest and excitement were clear on the bridge, as people occupied every square inch available. There were fans wearing t-shirts with their favorite boxers and teams, mini Cuban and U.S. flags waving in the air, and daring watchers perched within the structures of the bridge to get a better view. The Roberto Clemente Bridge was filled to capacity with people, pride and the spirit of competition.

Cuba won the overall event, 7-4. Yet, everyone involved - boxers, fans and organizers alike - left the venue feeling a sense of accomplishment and with a story they can tell for years to come.

Congratulations are in order for all of the athletes, coaches, mentors, parents, organizers and dignitaries. Duelo del Siglo was truly a memorable program and a trailblazer for future collaborations between our countries.

¡Felicidades!
