McCain No Friend to Vets

At Friday's debate at the University of Mississippi, John McCain said: "As far as our other issues that he brought up are concerned, I know the veterans. I know them well. And I know that they know that I'll take care of them. And I've been proud of their support and their recognition of my service to the veterans. And I love them. And I'll take care of them. And they know that I'll take care of them. And that's going to be my job."

In fact, McCain has been no friend to veterans, according to his ratings from different veterans groups, which are based on his votes in Congress.

2006: Senator McCain supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 20 percent in 2006.
2006: In 2006 Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave Senator McCain a grade of D.
2006: Senator McCain sponsored or co-sponsored 18 percent of the legislation favored by the The Retired Enlisted Association in 2006.
2005: Senator McCain supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 25 percent in 2005.
2004: Senator McCain supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 50 percent in 2004.
2004 Senator McCain supported the interests of the The Retired Enlisted Association 0 percent in 2004.
2003-2004: Senator McCain supported the interests of the Vietnam Veterans of America 100 percent in 2003-2004.
2003: Senator McCain supported the interests of the The American Legion 50 percent in 2003.
2001: Senator McCain supported the interests of the Vietnam Veterans of America 46 percent in 2001.
1999: Senator McCain supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 66 percent in 1999.
1997-1998: Senator McCain supported the interests of the Vietnam Veterans of America 0 percent in 1997-1998.
1989-1990: On the votes that the Vietnam Veterans of America considered to be the most important in 1989-1990 , Senator McCain voted their preferred position 50 percent of the time.

Senator Barack Obama has been a much better friend to veterans, based on his ratings from veterans groups.

McCain consistently voted against increasing funding for the Veterans' Administration, which oversees all medical care for veterans. McCain:

- Voted against an amendment providing $20 billion to the VA's medical facilities. [5/4/06]
- Voted against providing $430 million to the VA for outpatient care "and treatment for veterans," one of only 13 Senators to do so. [4/26/06]
- Voted against increasing VA funding by $1.5 billion by closing corporate loopholes. [3/14/06]
- Voted against increasing VA funding by $1.8 billion by ending "abusive tax loopholes." [3/10/04]

McCain refused to support the 21st Century GI Bill, sponsored by Senator Jim Webb of Virginia, which the Veterans of Foreign Wars endorsed. McCain opposed the new GI Bill that President Bush -- after originally threatening to veto -- signed into law this past June 30. The new GI Bill will cover veterans for the full cost of education at any public school in the country and many private schools (it's capped at the cost of the most expensive public school in the respective state). It provides upfront tuition payments directly to the school, a book/supply stipend of $1,000 per year and a monthly living stipend. McCain did not vote on this legislation. He was in California to attend a fundraiser. McCain opposed the measure, because it provided full education benefits to members of the military after just one stint in the armed services.

McCain also supported measures that veterans groups said would weaken the VA health system by privatizing some of its medical functions.

John McCain is not a friend of veterans, POWs/MIAs, or their families and friends. In addition to his pathetic voting record as discussed, he has thwarted efforts to resolve POW/MIA issues persistently. This is discussed by Mr. Schanberg in the article titled below. The link is provided to this well documented piece of journalism which is quite damning regarding John McCain.

The "war hero" candidate buried information about POWs left behind in Vietnam"

THANK YOU for giving a voice on this issue. Blue Star Families for Obama (www.bsf4o.com) is working hard to let Americans know how we feel about McCain's lack of support for our troops, our veterans and military families along with his incessant war-mongering.

This issue is important not only for the veteran vote but also for all Americans voting. McCain relies heavily on being a veteran and a POW, but those qualities alone do not qualify him to be Commander in Chief.

This is such old news. But according to McCain, Obama doesn't "support our troops," where "support" means make them keep fighting until they manage to find a reason to have been fighting in the first place. "Support our troops" SHOULD mean don't send them into harm's way for no good reason, and take care of them after they come back. But y'know, USA! USA! or whatever.

Can it be considered treason for McCain to get up there and LIE about his record on veterans issues? McCain is a LIAR and a fraud. PLEASE go the the NATION website, and download Sydney Schanberg's monumental expose of the real John McCain-no hero to vets, especially POW and MIA. McCain has authored numerous bills to keep POW families from obtaining info on missinggloved ones from all wars, not just Vietnam. It is thought this is to keep the docs about his actual" imprisonment "in Vietnam , and the unpublicized circumstances thereof.Once again, EVERYONE else pays so the Myth of McCain can be promulgated. The author,Schanberg is a giant in war reporting, having won Pulitzer and other notable and distinguished literary awards. PLEASE READ The Schanberg article if you care about your country.

There is absolutely no debating the fact that with Senator McCain not voting for bills laced with pork and ear marks especially on bills for other veterans; he does put our country first.
If anyone bothered to read or listened to his words – they would already know he wants these billions in wasteful spending to go directly to Veterans Affairs.
While a good president knows there would be no United States without veterans he would-not rightly put veterans in front of our Country (what true veteran would even want that?). Veterans barely survived these last thirty years and our funding has finally been getting on the right track, and with no thanks to this congress for adding billions in back door pork, earmarks and/or amnesty for illegal’s etc…

Bullsh*t! McCain isn't willing to provide veterans with the basic services he, himself, has received. At best, he's a hypocrite; at worst, he's downright abusive to those who have served us on the battlefield.

Neither Bush nor McCain will acknowledge most the the battle-related injuries of Iraq veterans because 1) it will reveal the actual human costs of the Iraq War and 2) it will add millions/billions to the overall cost of the war.

McCain doesn't love the veterans. He blatantly neglects them.

There is no debating the fact that McCain has voted against veteran's benefits at every opportunity. Are you a veteran? Have you really been paying attention? I am a veteran, and I am disgusted by McCain's phony claim to have supported us. With friends like McCain, who needs enemies"

Yes, Obama should have hit hard on McCain's support of Webb's 21st Century GI Bill , especially since on signing the bill GWB tried to credit McCain with pushing it through to resolution.

Webb''s 21st Century GI Bill passed 75-22.

Only three senators were not present to vote.

Senator Ted Kennedy (D) due to health problems.

Senator Tom Colburn (R) had to attend a funeral.

AND

Senator John McCain, who chose to attend a fund raiser instead of voting.

I have heard this before. Why doesn't Obama hit him with this? i was waiting during the debate for Obama to counter GI John's BS about his deep concern for his fellow vets with these very facts. Obama took a few swings at the Grumpy Warrrior buts needs to answer his street fight with similar tactics (or is that stategy).
08:45 AM on 09/27/2008
Indeed, I was waiting for Obama to pounce on the fact that McCain didn't vote for the new G.I. bill, however since he himself is not a veteran he might have thought it best to let that be.. Afterwards one of the spokesmen fot Vets Against Iraq said that was okay, they'd do the speaking...

Obama's most glaring missed opportunity of the night.

Pathetic record, to say the least. McCain likes to think he gives veterans issues bills the same critical, objective eye one might give military hardware issues bills. Should the standards for support of veterans be higher for a legislator that was a POW, than a legislator with no military experience? One need look no further than McCain's position on providing veterans with a card to use in private hospitals, thereby shifting the VA system to a redundant system of healthcare for veterans. Why would he want to do that? He knows the card will lower the quality of care for veterans.

Because that would help the private health "care" industry in America while harming those who we owe the most to. Thus he supported it.
