Fox News host Bill O'Reilly has repeatedly cited one reason to support Arizona's harsh new anti-immigrant law: the state's exploding crime rate.

As FAIR documented in a May 17 Action Alert, there is no such crime wave in the state. What's more, most research shows that immigrants tend to commit less crime than the population at large.

The day after the FAIR alert, O'Reilly (5/18/10) was still at it, declaring that "crime in Arizona is up." When his guest, Cathy Areu of Catalina magazine, pointed out that the El Paso "is one of the safest cities in the United States"-- proof that the presence of immigrants does not increase crime--O'Reilly replied: "That's a bunch of baloney."

He was wrong. El Paso is regularly ranked as one of the safest cities in the United States (L.A. Times, 5/13/10). In fact, border towns with heavy levels of immigration are among the safest cities in the U.S. (AP, 6/3/10).

On May 21, O'Reilly claimed that Arizona is "overrun with crime and everything else and people getting slaughtered on their ranches. I mean, it's insane."

But since then, O'Reilly's stopped making these false accusations. Maybe he saw the FAIR petition demanding that he stop. Or maybe he read the story in another Murdoch-owned news outlet, the Wall Street Journal (5/25/10), about how the newly released FBI crime statistics for 2009 show that the violent crime rate "plunged 16.6 percent in Phoenix, despite a perception of rising crime that has fueled an immigration backlash."

That false perception and backlash have been perpetrated by media figures like Bill O'Reilly.

Is this Fox's way of admitting a series of errors? If O'Reilly realized that he was wrong, then he should tell his viewers.

Over 2,500 activists have signed the petition to Fox News demanding that O'Reilly stop his immigrant crime slurs.

Please sign and add your voice -- and we'll demand a response from Fox News Channel.

Here's O'Reilly's record of misinformation:

  • May 3: "Arizona had to do something. In the capital city, Phoenix, crime's out of control. For example, last year, New York City, with six times as many residents as Phoenix, had just 16,000 more reported crimes."
  • May 4: "The Arizona authorities say we're desperate. We don't have the money. Our crime problem is through the roof. Phoenix one of the most dangerous cities in the country. We got to do something."
  • May 6: "So the state of Arizona faced with an overwhelming crime problem, social chaos and a bankrupt treasury had to do something."
  • May 13: "Arizona's bankrupt. The crime's through the roof. Phoenix is the kidnapping capital of the United States now."
  • May 14: "Arizona's already won the war of public opinion.... Americans understand, look, here's a state where the federal government will not do its job. The state has 500,000 illegal aliens. It's bankrupt. Phoenix is the kidnapping capital of the United States. Crime is through the roof. Drugs are coming across the border all the time. So what do you expect Arizona to do?"

Americans!! Always ignoring the elephant in the room. Mexico has nothing for its people and never has. No one would want to come here if Mexico cared enough to keep jobs rolling for its working class. The rich of the country just don't want them there any longer and they don't care if they starve.

If you want to be angry, try aiming at the leadership of Mexico.

Bill O'Reilly is 100% correct about the wave of crime that has has been perpetrated on American citizens by illegal aliens coming ILLEGALY across our southern border. If Peter Hart had an ounce of brainpower working for him and wasn't so blinded by his desire to be politically correct, he would bother as a good journalist to investigage the rapes, murders, thefts, and violent cartel style killings going on across EVERY state in America, committed by people who have absolutely no right to be here. Perhaps Peter Hart should meet with the victims families and see the train wreck our country has become due to illegals crossing the border. I am a Latina and I am disgusted that Obama and our government will not protect American citizens FIRST. More Americans have died at the hands of illegals than were killed in 911 or the Iraqi War. Our local and federal gov't covers up these facts by not allowing solid statistics to be kept. We can track these murders, rapes etc by police and media reports only. My family is several generations in America, and we came here to work hard, obey the law and get away from the atrocities committed in Mexico and Central/South America -- not to have it follow us and create an unsafe place for our children to live here in the USA! BASTA!
04:28 PM on 06/13/2010
Your family is "several generations in America"? Try tracing your ancestry from 1680. Many of my ancestors died for you and others to have the right to come here. Starvation is a powerful motivator. Nothing says our government must protect any single one of us individually, but it has to try. If trouble followed you maybe you should not be here. America is not trouble free, but neither are illegal aliens the cause of all the problems. As the facts bear in this case. Should every immigrant coming here be put on probation for citizenship. Yes, if they are here legally. Does our country try to handle requests timely, i.e. before a family starves or is killed by drug gangs? No. Your story about Obama not protecting you does not add up. He is not your personal protector or ours. Where was your concern when George Bush wanted to talk about immigration? I find it strange that you are only now getting concerned if you have been here for generations.

cherryblossom with the classic GOP response. Ignore the facts and keep spewing the talking points. This fight is not about right and wrong to them it is about winning elections. To cherry politics is more like sport. There's no reason to support their side other than they always have. That's why cherry ignores the FBI crime statistics and continues to perpetrate GOP lies.

You know Bill O'Reilly is lying because his lips are moving!
03:48 PM on 06/07/2010
I don't think we should waste our time demanding conservatives stop lying.

Instead, we should show their lies to the world, so that the world can properly stop paying attention to them.

If all we do is petition O'Reilly to stop lying, then we'll have to sign petitions until he dies. However, if for every petition you would sign, we all go and show someone he was full of it, who didn't know before, we'll be able to eventually fix the problem permanently.

Billo isn't going to stop lying. What would he have left? It's his currency, his stock in trade, his forte. Without lying his other strong suit, telling guests how they are know-nothing idiots would mean nothing. There'd be no more Billo, and then where would the world be?

It is never a good idea to exaggerate - the numbers speak for themselves. 368 kidnappings in Phoenix, AZ, in one year - mostly due to drug cartel involvement - has made that city the "Kidnap Capital of the United States".

He spent 5 years denigrating a doctor that helped women, in the most inflammatory and salacious terms, then claimed complete innocence when the man was killed.

At a rape awareness seminar, he blamed the raped and murdered victim for ber rape and murder!

Do not expect O'Rielly to do the right thing here , or ever.
04:32 PM on 06/13/2010
He aided in the killing of the Doctor. He should be tried in a court of law for inciting the violence he encouraged. Yet, he walks free.

Have you actually been to the Southern border of AZ? It looks like a third world country, where the illegals are parking, setting up drug labs, building 'homes' out of carboard, tarpaper and tin. There are no sanitary facilities, no water, and where they get their food is a mystery to me. The crime rate is horrific.

Do you suggest we go down there and build nice little communities for them? Do you realize how hard AZ was hit by the current economic housing crisis? Arizonans have enough homeless citizens to try to care for, we cannot take on the burden of another country's problems.

These people drift north, bringing their living standards and their crime with them.

I think the law is insane, poorly written, and impossible to police. Jan Brewer makes Sarah Palin look like a Rhodes Scholar and I hope voters here are savvy enough to get rid of her this fall. I have my doubts.

I think in time you will come to realize that the law is not poorly written, in fact the whole problem for those who oppose it is that it is actually well written and can most probably stand

Brewer is brave - she is ready to be unpopular in order to do something that is right. She is willing to stand up for LEGAL CITIZENS AND OUR RIGHTS

Illegals do bring their third world living standards with them and they are bringing down the whole country.

It's the Federal Gov't that is derelict in their duties, they have completely ignored their responsibility to secure the border.

The time is now to SECURE THE BORDER AND DEPORT, DEPORT, DEPORT

Which is more illegal: being in the USA without proper papers, or hiring people without proper papers? Why would people stay here if there wasn't something to keep them here? Just asking...

Mr./Ms. Jake...... you are wrong my french thinking friend. All is not lost in picturesque Arizona. It is currently the s%&t sandwich you hear of but not yet hopeless. Already...as we write, illegals are flowing out of the more poplulated areas of Arizona and heading for beautiful downtown Burbank, Cal. to be on the late show with Mr. Leno. If the simple immigration laws that are currently on our books were enforced, these points would be moot. They would be moot and yes.....Mr. Leno would be moot.

We don't want the illegals here in California -- nightmare for California's already broke and overpopulated state. Californians MUST stand and unite to demand we have the same immigration laws as Arizona and fight the Los Angeles/San Francisco sanctuary city policies --which are illegal in themselves -- and get this state back on track.

Has Billo the Clown stopped lying about Arizona's Immigrant Crime Wave?
Well, I doubt it. Usually when he tells a lie, he keeps telling it at all opportunities, indefinitely, in keeping with his belief that if you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth.
Has he stopped lying in general?
We know the answer to that one. He lies for a living. And because lying is the truest expression of what he is as a man. He will never stop lying.
10:16 PM on 06/06/2010
Billo wouldn't know lies from truth. Never has. Our city paper just keeps on keepin' on carrying his lying, worthless column despite people's complaints.

Nothing new from O'Reilly, just more misinformation and right wing spin. I enjoyed the city of Tucson safely and without incident for nine months. A beautiful state that doesn't need to be bashed by a bigot like O'Reilly that probably hasn't been to Arizona for any extended period of time ever.

Signs up all over the west in the 1840's: "Help Wanted: Irish need not apply." They sell them in stores in Virginia City, Nevada to this day. Racism has always existed in this country; too bad that it probably always will. I used to have a little faith in human nature, but the older I get, the less exists.
