Bunny Berigan
Jazz maestro Bunny Berigan was born Rowland Bernard Berigan in Wisconsin in 1908. Early years of fiddle and trumpet playing led to a professional career by his late teens. At the start of the Great Depression, Berigan landed a coveted spot in the Hal Kemp Orchestra. In 1931, the trumpeter/vocalist joined Fred Rich's CBS band and became a sought-after studio musician. In 1935, Benny Goodman invited him aboard, launching the Swing Era. Building on success, Berigan started his own orchestra in 1937. Collaborations include The Dorsey Brothers, Glenn Miller, Buddy Rich, and Paul Whiteman. The virtuoso struggled with the sauce, eventually succumbing to cirrhosis at the early age of 33. Remember Berigan's grand trove with his classic take on Ira Gershwin/Vernon Duke's "I Can't Get Started," from the Let's Do It! collection.
