Franklin Graham and the Art of Misinformation

Posted: 02/23/2012 11:54 am

The anti-Muslim base in America is no stranger to promoting misinformation about Islam, Muslims and even President Obama. During Franklin Graham's Feb. 21 "Morning Joe" appearance, nothing changed.

Graham reiterated the oft-repeated claim that Muslims are persecuting Christians because "Under shariah law, a Muslim can take a Christian's property without restriction and subject Christian women against their will." Mind you, no evidence or references are offered to support such a claim, but for those who prefer clear evidence to the contrary, here it is: The Quran is the first and only religious scripture that commands its adherents -- Muslims -- to protect churches, synagogues and temples from attack and to do so in preference to protecting mosques (22:40-41). Accordingly, in a letter to St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai, Prophet Muhammad gave his written oath that Muslims must protect Christian churches and properties until the end of time. He added that should anyone take anything belonging to a Christian, he would break his covenant with God and Prophet Muhammad. Under sharia (Islamic law), taking another's property -- regardless of the other person's faith -- is theft, a violation of the other's rights and honor, and severely punishable.

Likewise, any belief that sharia "allows" Muslim men to subject women against their will -- Christian or not -- is baseless. The Quran explicitly declares, "O ye who believe! It is not lawful for you to inherit women against their will..." (4:20). The Quran protects all women, regardless of faith. Those Muslims who persecute Christians and harm women are to be categorically condemned. Those so-called Muslims perform these atrocious acts in spite of Islam, not because of it.

Graham also alleged that the "Muslim world considers Obama a son of Islam because his father, grandfather and great grandfathers were Muslim -- that's sharia -- that's just the way it is." Ignoring for the moment how one would know what the Muslim world is thinking, such an assertion is, again, patently false. Islam -- like Christianity -- rejects the notion of inherited faith, requiring Muslims to actively affirm their faith by reciting the Shahadah if they claim to be Muslim. The Shahadah, which declares, "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger," serves a role for Muslims similar to that of baptism for Christians. Whatever the Muslim world thinks, sharia is clear: a person is a Muslim if he or she claims to be, and not a Muslim if he does not claim to be. President Obama has been forced -- most unfortunately -- more than any President in American history to perpetually reaffirm his Christian faith and belief in Jesus as his Savior. For some, however, this is just not enough. Perhaps in misrepresenting President Obama's faith, critics glossed over Matthew 7:1, "Judge not lest ye be judged."

Frankly speaking, such critics should stop speaking on anything related to Islam, others' faith, or foreign policy if they are not willing to support their assertions with facts and objective reasoning. Such discrimination against Muslims and those not "Christian enough" is frighteningly similar to evangelist Muslim clerics who express intense bigotry to Christians and those not "Muslim enough." Instead, as American Muslims, we invite people of all faiths -- and certainly evangelical Christians -- to open and candid dialogues based on pluralism and conflict resolution. In fact, when Christians from Najran traveled to Mecca to see about Prophet Muhammad's claim, this is exactly what history records. The Christian travelers became Prophet Muhammad's honored guests, even offering their worship services -- unhindered -- in his personal mosque at his invitation.

Enough of misinformation and discrimination. Muslims and Christians must actively work together to achieve what both peoples want -- peace. As the Quran says, "Surely, those who have believed, and the Jews, and the Sabians, and the Christians -- whoso believes in God and the Last Day and does good deeds, on them shall come no fear, nor shall they grieve." As Muslims who believe in the messiah, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, we believe peace means developing a bond between man and the Creator, and letting the judgment be His and His alone.

Each if they want Our Creator's approval have to get right. Chance of that happening on a mass scale is extremely slim. One here one there, perhaps. Here is a place that "Christians" may start the thinking process toward a right thinking process;

Here is a place where a Muslim may find some information that can help them get on to a right thinking process.

Evangelical Christianity is not Christianity at all. It is thinly veiled militancy which justifies itself by hiding behind religion. You keep focusing on hell every single time. What issue do you take with the Quran? Your second link does not strengthen your point at all. In fact it only works against you. I respect Christians as a people who believe in God. Hypocrites deserve no respect at all. All they want to do is create discord and hatred among believers. All they do is focus on small differences. We want to focus on overwhelming similarities between our beliefs. My suggestion to you is this: stop spreading hatred and misinformation.

When the Qur'an says it gave the Jews their Scriptures and the Christian their Scriptures and when one checks all the scriptures in both the Jewish and the Christian scriptures where there is a word translated to read "hell' and sees that "hell" there is "NOT A PLACE OF HOT TORTURE" then when looking at the Qur'an and sees that repeatedly it is a hot place of torture and Muslims are suppose to put people back into it if they try to get out and pour boiling water on them and we see on the news similar evil done by masses numbers of Muslims are we not to believe the Qur'an itself is "spreading hatred and misinformation.” you referred to?

You say, "I respect Christians as a people who believe in God. Hypocrites deserve no respect at all." and I have heard Muslims say they respect Jesus, but Jesus said at John 8:44 that those who lie are working for the Devil. Do you think lying is OK, Jesus also indicated at John 8:44 that those people were also killers, do you believe your Muslim killer brothers are OK people? Do you think it is OK for the Qur'an to tell Muslims to pour boiling water on people, or put them fire?

How many people are researching statements made in this article before simply reacting emotionally?

How many people actually saw Rev. Graham's interview before posting your comment?

How many people are aware Rev. Graham's comment on Morning Joe has been taken out of context and this misinformation has spread like wildfire?

You keep mentioning misconceptions on others part, including the author's. Would you mind explaining what Mr. Graham's remarks were in context?

I can't believe this man is Billy Graham's son! He is nothing like his father, which is so sad. He needs prayer because he is operating our of ignorant and God would not have anyone who professes Him ignorant.

Billy Graham is certainly not a person who deserves admiration. He seemed to approve of and justify acts of monstrous savagery on the part of US government. Look at his statements regarding Vietnam.

This man is a bigot and is misinformed ...his comments seem racist and exclusionary...im sure his father is not proud of him. He sure isnt his dad.

You are clearly prejudiced against persons of other faiths. Franklin Graham is a person of no integrity. His words should not be listened to, nor should the words of his apologists.
02:20 PM on 02/25/2012
I'm not sure how disagreeing with misinformation contained in an article makes me prejudiced against other faiths. I AM prejudiced against false information. I do not follow the belief system of Rev. Graham, but I will say something if someone is being vilified falsely. He never indicated our president was Muslim. Period. He was speaking to the perception of religious inheritance. Did you watch the interview that's being discussed?
02:32 PM on 02/25/2012
---"You are clearly prejudiced against persons of other faiths"
Really? You have come to this conclusion because I disagree with an article? What swift judgement.

---"Franklin Graham is a person of no integrity"
Truly? Do you know him personally? No integrity? That's a strong statement.

---"His words should not be listened to, nor should the words of his apologists.""
It's clear you didn't listen to his words, or you would see the flaws in the article and be aware that he never called the President a Muslim, but speaking to "perception". But you're probably not listening to my apologist's words, so best of luck to you.

We saw and head Graham with our own eyes and ears. We head what we heard and YOU are trying to tell us we DIDN'T hear what we heard. What Graham said is fact. PROVABLE fact! Go back and listen.......
10:51 AM on 02/27/2012
I'm so glad you saw and heard Rev. Graham with your own eyes and ears. Then you are certainly aware you never heard him say our President IS a Muslim. How certain Muslims might PERCEIVE our President is what you heard. On your advice, I did go back and listen, just to make sure I heard what I believed I heard.

Do I think he handled the interview well? Not particularly, but if I was surrounded by people pressing me to answer questions that don't have any good answer, I'm not sure I'd do any better. Frankly, he should not have answered that line of questioning. My point in speaking up was to clarify the one statement he DIDN'T make.

And as to another comment you made, I COMPLETELY agree with you about certain types of Christians being the most hateful, mean spirited people. For example (off topic a bit) I think Santorum is demonstrating the very type of Christian that is frightening. If more Christians behaved as Christ demonstrated (love and compassion and letting people exercise free will), we wouldn't all be so divided.

If we are going to talk about a religious group confiscating property, we need go no further than right here on the American continents. Pillage, murder, rape, theft of property were the hallmarks of the Christians of the past 500 years.
08:55 AM on 02/24/2012
Thank you! But, I can see by comments below that you are "whistling into the wind." I believe strongly that if Jesus was physically here, some of the so-called Christians in this country would persecute him, too. I am so saddened by all the hatred.
08:40 AM on 02/24/2012
Wow, "As Muslims who believe in the messiah, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian"....let me stop you right there...in one small sentence you a) deny Jesus' messiahship and b) affirm the claims of a Muslim who spread lies about his crucifixtion...Now, why would we take your word with regard to your other claims over Franklin Graham? A man whose organization has provided more support to Muslim people than any other in the world.

I don’t for a minute believe Islam is a peaceful religion. It’s all very well for Moslems to insist that their faith, properly interpreted, doesn’t condone the barbarism with which infidels and heretics have been treated. If any religion is to cope with these deviations, it needs to recognize they don’t come out of thin air but have roots, however twisted, in the faith itself. There is something sinister in the religious ‘space’ opened up by whatever revelations Islam, or for that matter Christianity or Judaism propose that allow inhumanity breed to side by side with the tolerance Mr. Rashid insists on. Imams, Bishops and Rabbis need to search for the seeds of aggression in their own scriptures, admit that their own faith has a history of hatred, and revise bigoted, self-serving textbooks.

Christianity and Judaism are neither peaceful religions, their histories are full of murder, war, rape and worse. Get a clue.

Try reading again. I specifically included Christianity and Judaism with Islam. The intolerance is a hallmark of Abrahamic faiths.

You're right. Christianity and Judaism are equally to blame as Islam. Which is why I included them in censuring Imams, Rabbis and Bishops. Try reading posts through next time.

Isn’t it better to translate the Arabic words of the Muslim declaration of faith in English as: "There is no God but God". -- The phrase "There is no god but Allah", seems to be as wrong as "There is no god but Dieu". It causes unnecessary problems, like: Americans and French believe in a different God. :)
08:43 AM on 02/24/2012
Well, it is important to note that the word Allah and God used as proper nouns are not synonomous. They are as distinct as the teachings the Holy books which record their acts are. God, the Great I Am or the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is Holy and wholly distinct and different from Allah the pagan moon god who through Muhammad was elevated to ultimate deity status.

There is no God but God....and surely that god is God far above Allah.
03:38 AM on 02/25/2012
I am sorry JPaul, but what you said is completely misinformed- Allah is not a pagan moon god. That is fallacy. Ask any Muslim or go to any Muslim website/source and nobody will agree to this. Allah is simply the Arabic word for God. The Christians and Jews in Arabia say Allah as well. Allah is the same God of Abraham, Moses, Jesus peace be upon them all.

However, the only point we differ in is that we do not depict him as a "reflection of man" or "in the image" of man. God is the Unseen, the Supreme, the Most High. He begets not, nor is He begotten. We do not worship moons, nor suns, earth, animals, humans etc. We only, and solely worship God (not Muhammad, nor moons), and we do not depict God with any drawing or shape and limit Him to that. We do not depict Him so that so we do not fall into paganism, by worshiping an idol rather than Him truly.

Muhammad was a messenger of God, but a man. The moon you see on top of our domes is only a decoration...we usually follow the lunar calendar, but that's all :/

Rashid says, "The Quran is the first and only religious scripture that commands its adherents -- Muslims -- to protect churches, synagogues and temples from attack and to do so in preference to protecting mosques (22:40-41)."

In fact, if we actually READ Qur'an 22:40-41, we find (not surprisingly) that it contains nothing whatever about giving preference to protecting churches, synagogues and temples over mosques.
08:47 AM on 02/24/2012
I think you have discovered something quite common with regard to Muslims and their scripture. They don't know what it "really" says or twist it to mean what they want.
10:41 PM on 02/23/2012
If there is no war on Christians, why is Iran about to hang a Christian pastor, who never was Muslim, but is accused of apostasy for not renouncing his faith in Jesus Christ? His parents were Muslim, and that is enough? I guess that makes Obama guilty of the same thing...unless he is considered Muslim. Rashid, you are not believable.

to be harmless and loving when he is one of the few in the land of infidels ( I read and understood

From Muhammad's Qur'an:

Surah 9:30:

"The Jews call Ezra a son
Of God, and the Christians
Call Christ the Son of God.
That is a saying from their mouths:
(In this) they but imitate
What the unbelievers of old
Used to say. Allah's curse
Be on them: how they are deluded
Away from the Truth!"

Surah 5.73:

"They do blaspheme who say
Allah is one of three
In a Trinity: for there is
No god except One God."

Surah 3:56:

"As for those disbelieving infidels, I will punish them with a terrible agony in this world and the next. They have no one to help or save them."

Surah 4: 150-151:

"Those who deny Allah
And His Messengers, and (those
Who) wish to separate
Allah from His Messengers,
Saying: 'We believe in some
But reject others':
And (those who) wish
To take a course midway -

They are in truth
(Equally) Unbelievers.
And we have prepared
For Unbelievers a humiliating
Punishment."
