"What are some tips for taking my tennis skills to the next level?"

At my academies I focus a lot on technique. Establishing a good technical base is very important, especially at a beginner level. Without good tennis technique it becomes increasingly difficult for a player to master any of the shots required to become good.

Beyond that you have to learn how to move. Speed, agility, and good footwork are all essential in tennis. You won't be able to hit the ball with power, control, and consistency if you're not in the right position.

Next, you have to learn how to win. This skill is a bit more abstract but it's just as important as the rest. And like everything, it requires a lot of practice to master.

There are so many good tennis players out there who all hit the ball great, but obviously most of them never make it to the top. One major reason for this is that they simply don't compete as well as the top guys.

I learned how to fight, compete, and win as a young teenager by playing thousands of practice matches against players who were better than me. I would have morning sessions before school with the best guys on the mens' team at my club. Every week I would play between 20-25 competitive sets. I tried to train and practice the same way I would be playing an important match. I would often play against guys that were older, bigger, and stronger than me (with old-school rackets and string). This meant I couldn't overpower my opponents and so I was forced to learn tactics and the art of strategy to win.

The best tip I can give you without knowing your standard is to find the area you need to improve and focus on that. Ask your coach to help, and get out there and practice, practice, practice.
