A Minute of Silence for the Sacredness of Life

Posted: 07/24/2012 10:00 am

This past Friday Coloradans throughout our state and the rest of the nation woke up to the horrific news of a murder spree at the Century Movie Theater in Aurora. As a recent transplant from Cambridge, Mass., and the new rabbi of Denver's largest Modern Orthodox synagogue, BMH-BJ Congregation, I was tremendously shaken.

It had already been a hard and painful week for people of conscience throughout the world upon the news of the terrorist attack on a bus of Israeli tourists in Bulgaria, which had claimed the lives of five young men and women and their tour bus driver. The deep ache of our collective souls only took another deep sigh as we learned the names and identities of the 12 precious individuals who lost their lives simply because they were enjoying a night out at the movies, including the loss of a 6-year-old child.

How do we possibly respond? What is there to do in the face of so much loss and devastation? The life of every individual is ultimately bound up and intertwined in the lives of every other individual and when my neighbor, whether down the street or across the globe, suffers and is in pain then we are suffering and all in pain. It is moments like these that demand that we stand up and affirm the uncompromising and unyielding sacredness of all life. We must not let our lives go unaffected by what happens around us; we must rise and declare that we care.

The 2012 Summer Olympics are set to begin this Friday in London. These games will be the 40th anniversary of the brutal massacre of 11 Olympians at the Munich Olympics in 1972. The image of the masked individuals butchering athletes at the prime of their lives will forever be ingrained in the collective memory of humanity.

There has been an internationally backed request to observe a minute of silence at the start of the Olympics in their memory. This request has been affirmed by President Obama, the United States Senate and several other world governments. The Olympic Committee has denied this request.

Let us be clear: To do anything less than unequivocally stand up against terrorism, in all the forms it takes, is to do none other condone that violence. The murderers, terrorists and evildoers of this world will only find strength and encouragement when the global community refuses to honor the memory of those who lives were taken and stand for justice and peace.

This Sunday (July 29) our congregation along with the leaders and members of faith communities throughout the metropolitan area will gather in front of our building at 1 p.m. to observe a minute of silence. We will be silent and lift up our thoughts and prayers for the lives of all who are so brutally and viciously taken from us. Our silence will speak louder than words that we, people of faith and conscience, will never be desensitized and insensitive to the loss of life and the devaluing of a fellow human being. The Olympic Committee may refuse to acknowledge the responsibility they owe to the international community to create a minute of worldwide affirmation of the sacredness of life but that will not stop us. I invite all people who wish to be counted amongst those who stand up and say "I care" and I will not let murder, terrorism and brutality, be it in Munich, Bulgaria or Aurora, pass by unnoticed to join us. Let us, together, affirm the shared destiny of all of humanity and the value of each and every human life.

Palestinians are free to condemn violent jihadist attacks and renounce violence at any moment.
But they won't.
Not now, and likely not ever.
Where are the Palestinian peace activists?
Where are the peace groups in the Palestinian Territories?

Israelis are free to condemn violent ultra-nationalistic attacks and renounce violence at any moment.
But they won't.
Not now, and likely not ever.
Where are the Israeli peace activists?
Where are the peace groups in Israel?

After all, Israel started the Palestinian resistance with its theft of Palestinian homes, land, livelihoods.

You know there are Israeli peace groups and Israeli peace activists. There are NO corresponding groups among Palestinians.
Such an absence is very telling.

rabbi great article, but one thing is missing here, palestinian terrorism by hamas is mentioned here but why is IDF terrorism not mentioned? based on Israel peace group IDF has killed 2500+ civilians in past decade out of which 300+ were children and let me be clear one more time: civilians...every life is sacred and every life lost because of violence should be condemned....
09:51 PM on 07/24/2012
Gee, you forgot to mention how those American terrorists in Pakistan killed those innocent civilians hanging around with Bin Laden.
Firing rockets blind into civilian territory is terrorism. Targeted strikes against said terrorists who embed themselves in villages to turn innocent children into human shields is unfortunate collateral damage, and is calculated to illicit your exact response - blame the IDF for the grotesque acts of Hamas.

When you have no valid response, deflect.....right out of the Hasbara Handbook.

there would be no hamas if it were not for israel.

sorry to say, this is not about palis who lost their lives to fightning a warr on jews.
this isn't about a warr zone….this is about the Olympics….which should be a safe haven from
politics….and warrr.

ELEVEN people, jews, were senselessly slawtterred at the olympics…..by palestinians….
purposely, intentionally,Brutally. this was not a warr…..this was the olympics….those athletes were not soldiers….and if yu don't know the difference between a group of ATHLETES from the
IDF, then that is just the tip of much larger problem.
09:48 AM on 07/25/2012
Nor did you have a valid reply, so you just deflect, like a good hasbara.

'those athletes were not soldiers'

typical faux perpetual victimhood stance...read my comment 2500+ 'civilians'...if you don't know the difference between soldiers and civilians not my problem at all...

How about a moment of silence for both Israeli and palestinain athletes who have died and/or struggle to make it to the olympics.
10:00 PM on 07/24/2012
The Israeli athletes weren't killed in Israel in some attack - it was IN THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE! other than a brief ceremony the following day, the rest of the games continued on schedule, just missing a few athletes. If they had been American, Canadian, European, or any other country's athletes killed, you can bet you assets there would be no hesitation to have a moment of silence. Instead, because no one wants to upset anyone who disapproves of Israel, the IOC refuses. I would venture to bet that if they were Iranian athletes, the would have a moment of silence just to show how the olympics break down barriers, etc.

There was a minutes silence in the Olympic village just the other day led by the head of the Olympic committee. The games in '72 didn't really continue unaffected as there were a good few nations pulled their teams out after the much derided memorial service for various reasons.
It's also worth pointing out that in the revenge attacks after that the Israelis managed to assassinate an innocent Norwegian and IIRC at least four innocent people in Lebanon in a bomb attack. You know one of those things that israel are always decrying the Palestinians about.

Did he just forget to add Palestinians?

No Palestinians have been slaughtered at the Olympic Games.

What was your point again?

I thought he was condeming murder and terrorism everywhere not just at the olympics. Murder and terrorism are always wrong whether it is done by a state or an individual its still murder or terrorism.
10:36 AM on 07/25/2012
Is it because of the palestiniana are held in a open air prison. They are not allowed free movement by their oppressors the Israelis to even attend the olymics. Their diet is such that there are no healthy enough athletes. Or are in Israeli prisons on no charges, or how about they were simply killed by the IDF before they can even get to the Olympivs.

Are you sure? Where did you get the figures? From Hamas? From UN!!!? Do you regard Hamas as civilians or soldiers? ( Like in Lebanon the Hizballa's figures never mention Hizballa killed - they are right because Hizballa are civilians going back to home and work after some action or other or 'war"
Many figures Hamas gives are mathematicaly impossible. If 4000 were injured for instance, they would be lying outside Sheba Hospital for intl photo opportunity. Much like us using napalm and a little boy showing the palm of his hand blackened! What the world saw was chaffe surrounding helicopters to protect it from heat seeking missiles - as used in the USAF.
An Italian team of journalists interviewed the head of Sheba hospital who refuted all Hamas claims.]
In the IDF we are trained from day one the difference between militants and civilians - it would be totally against our political benefit to hurt cilivians - of course Hamas propaganda being so easily accepted by good people in the west was not taken into account..
