'All American Muslim' Celebrates All American Values

Last summer, an angry and emotionally-charged debate erupted over the so-called "Ground Zero mosque" in New York and the perceived threat and rights of a religious minority, American Muslims. While some were legitimately concerned for the sensitive reconstruction of property near Ground Zero, the controversy grew ugly and messy with some media and political figures calling for a moratorium on mosques everywhere -- near Ground Zero, Staten Island, Tennessee, Wisconsin, California and anywhere in our nation.

And there's no doubt a good deal of the rhetoric surrounding the controversy crossed the line from antipathy toward mosques to hateful comments about American Muslims and the religion of Islam itself.

Ignorant and inaccurate diatribes about Muslims and Islam are especially troubling due to the frightening impact this fear-mongering zeal continues to have on the fabric of American society. Hate crimes against American Muslims are up, and some 20 states are considering -- and even passing -- legislation attempting to limit the constitutionally-guaranteed rights of American Muslims to the free expression of their faith.

The latest chapter in this unfortunate national debate surrounds a new television show on TLC called "All-American Muslim." Filmed in Dearborn, Michigan, the reality show introduces viewers to the lives of five different American Muslim families which include real-life American Muslims such as a high school football coach, a federal agent, a businesswoman and a deputy chief of the county sheriff's office. The families may share the same faith, but the show realistically demonstrates that the nation's 6-7 million American Muslims lead lives that dispel the negative stereotypes about Islam and American Muslims.

In addition to the everyday family challenges of life in modern America, the show also tackles issues such as the diverse understandings of faith, post-9/11 life for American Muslims, and gender roles in Islam. Indeed, programs such as "All American Muslim" help defy long-held stereotypes and help us realize that American Muslims are overwhelmingly, quite simply, just like us.

Sadly, however, due to a shameful effort by a vocal few, the home-improvement supply store Lowe's pulled its commercial advertisements from future episodes of the new show as has the web-based travel site Kayak.com. A Tampa-based conservative Christian group, the Florida Family Association, has made the show its newest target with a letter-writing campaign urging companies to pull ads from TLC's show because, they allege, the show is "propaganda clearly designed to counter legitimate and present-day concerns about many Muslims who are advancing Islamic fundamentalism and Sharia law." Incredibly, McDonald's, Home Depot and Sears are facing similar pressure.

Are there extremists who promote violence in the name of faith? No doubt. Zealots of all three Abrahamic faiths have done so for time immemorial. But we must not commit the cardinal sin of taking as a dominant tradition or teaching one aspect of a religion (often torn from context) or condemning an entire faith community for its errant fanatics who may do something in the name of that religion but not actually even be believers in it. In our zeal to attack the extremes, we should not attack the spiritual truth of the religions themselves or individual believers who ground their citizenship and valued-based, community-spiritedness in their particular faith.

We would do well to remember the words of President George W. Bush in aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy: "Millions of our fellow citizens are Muslim. We respect the faith. We honor its traditions. Our enemy does not. Our enemy doesn't follow the great traditions of Islam. They've hijacked a great religion." And the post-9/11 statement issued by 57 leaders of North American Islamic organizations, 77 Islamic intellectuals, and dozens of concerned Muslim citizens: "As American Muslims and scholars of Islam, we wish to restate our conviction that peace and justice constitute the basic principles of the Muslim faith... Groups like al Qaeda have misused and abused Islam in order to fit their own radical and indeed anti-Islamic agenda. Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda's actions are criminal, misguided and counter to the true teachings of Islam." And the words of President Obama: "There are extremist organizations -- whether Muslim or any other faith -- that will use faith as a justification for violence. We cannot paint with a broad brush a faith as a consequence of the violence that is done in that faith's name."

As Americans of all faiths or no faith, we must recognize, marginalize and reject the divisive rhetoric of a vocal minority. Hate is hate. Human history shows us that hate tragically knows no bounds. The only way to make real the principles on which this country was founded, freedom of expression and religious liberty, is to unite against injustice as we loudly reject the angry voices of prejudice that go against all our faiths.

This program is pure propaganda, No where else on American television do you find programing produced to specifically promote a religion. The bigger question is, who is behind this and why.

how you interpret it is your doing. I think it is only fair to depict not only the general conservatism/extremism of Islam but also moderate Islam.

my pain comes from a different place, while watching i had seen the agony of a muslim woman unable to have a child.these parents went to their muslim leader and was told she could not use artifial insemination by sperm doner to raise a child not of her husband,it was not allowed at all.this woman was in such pain and was then told as a woman not wearing the ha jib or scarf made her less of a good muslim and should go back to wearing it.that angers me that her infertility was blamed on her. i dont know her but she seemed so loving and caring, a person who loved her faith, how could they blame her.i also went off all over huff. condemning the lowes action and will not shop there.it just seems so many times women get the blame for everything in islam even at times rape.

I cringed about that also, noodles. The imams were conservative and very old school. I think she is like many women who can't get pregnant though. They will try anything. When you look at the woman (both before and after she put on the hijab), It is her personality and the gentle expression she wears on her face along with humble, kind and compassionate eyes that tell me more about her. I see there is a goodness in her heart because it radiates in her being. If God hasn't chosen for her to have a child, there is always a reason. Patiently persevering we learn what that reason is sometimes. Other times, we have to just trust God knows more. I have not had many prayers answered and as I learn to say "insha'Allah" and mean it, I come to a place of serenity even over those things. May you be blessed.

thank you, although i cant believe god would make anyone suffer especially her, i thank you for your kind words.i do wish more americans could hear your explanation of what i had felt seeing her situation.lets both pray for her and hope the very best for her. i think any child would be lucky to have them for parents.may Allah bless you and she...robin

noodles865:"seems so many times women get the blame for everything in islam even at times rape."

fredaskribent: "The imams were conservative and very old school."

Conclusion: Following religious rulings justifies why women are mistreated.

It is not difficult to understand why President Bush and American Muslims would make these erroneous statements after 9/11.

But they are not true.

"Peace and justice" have an entirely different meaning in Sharia law than they have in American law.

As with all systems of law, Sharia has laws that require actions that are prohibited elsewhere in the laws. Such is the case with 9/11. Sharia has been used to justify defensive warfare and offensive warfare throughout the history of Islamic expansion, as the American scholars of Islam are well aware. Definitions of "innocent civilians" vary from scholar to scholar and from situation to situation.

The actions of 9/11 violated some Sharia laws and were obedient to others. No one has been tried in a Sharia court for those actions--the only way legality or illegality can be determined by Sharia standards. The statements of Muslim scholars, short of trial and judgment, are mere opinion.

What is certain is that there is no American version of Sharia law that prohibits jihad against America.

Debbie Schussel lied.

Suheila Amen (All-American Muslim cast member) is *not* an "open supporter of Hezbollah and HAMAS".

The article you linked disagrees with Debbie Schlussel's characterization of the Muslim Lebanese American Heritage Club as an anti Semitic, pro Hizballah organization and her characterization of CAIR.

Neither Schlussel nor your article offers evidence on the truth of Schlussel's claim about the MLAHC.

Ms. Schlussel's claim about CAIR's status as an unindicted co conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation's Hamas fund raising trial is well documented in the public record.

You have offered no proof that Debbie Schlussel lied about anything.

The entire Schlussel article is worth reading for background on TLC's biased, pro Islam approach to the series:

The assertions about an All-American Muslim cast member being affiliated with Hezbollah and Hamas, per a blog post by anti-Islam pundit Debbie Schussel are untrue.

Supporting the abuse of women is an all-American value?
03:46 PM on 12/19/2011
When I continue to read articles about how yet another brand of american is being discriminated against it turns my stomache. I am not a muslim nor do I believe in the Quran, however I do believe that we all have the right to worship God as we see fit!!! I think that when all we as a people do is sit around and judge others we show our nasty true colors!!!! I personally feel that if you can discriminate against someone based on anything other than who they are as a person, you think you might be able to talk crazy to me. And for the record U.S.A. I know there are probably people out there who can take me, just aint met em yet. I take personal offense to people who judge especially in the name of God. get a life or get at me!!!!

I am glad this article was written by the authors for it exemplifies true American values of: building bridges of understanding, tolerance and hopefully acceptance of others in our diverse community. This show illustrates that Muslim Americans are just like other Americans just following a different faith system. It shows everyday problems that allow people to relate and also wonder about the Islamic perspective. With 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide - these families do not represent everyone of them; they represent their own interpretations of how Islam should be practiced in their lives. Like all religions and cultural customs - people vary in application and interpretation and this must be emphasized.

Whose to say that one day as the Muslim population in the US grows that many of them won't turn on us?
Would a Muslim country let millions of Christians move there like Muslims have done here?
No, they would not trust us.
Background checks should be done on all coming into the US and those with questionable backgrounds turned away.

The name of the show is All American Muslim. AMERICAN. They were born here. This is their country, too. Background checks on these people would be like a background check on you.
This is a show that is long overdue. I watch it and I enjoy it. They're just like anybody else, except that their high school football team gets booed and called names when they go to another school to play football. On the first show, a Catholic man and a Muslim woman got married, and it was a great example of how getting to know somebody can wipe out the hate and
misguided, ridiculous prejudice that exists. It looked like a pretty fun wedding to me. I think if people are going to protest a tv show they should at least watch it first. If you're stuck in hate mode it probably wouldn't make a difference, but you never know.

Yea and that Muslim woman made her converted Christian to Muslim husband get rid of his dog ........... Like she didn't know all along he had a dog... All of a sudden the 15 year old dog he had for 10 years had to go ... All of a sudden she is allergic. More like Muslims think dogs are He should have gotten rid her and kept his dog. it was gut wrenching. I for one will not be watching anymore .
04:56 AM on 12/20/2011
Background checks on those coming in to this country.... I watched most of the show about the football coach and a little of the some of the others.
Had a hard time trying to figure out why that coach would miss his invitation to the white house for a football practice. Yes he went but almost did not, he really hesitated alot. Yes his football team is important to him but it was only a practice, not the state championship game he was missing. Seems any American would be jumping at a chance like that.
I don't really think we get a good perspective on Muslims just from a few American born Muslims from the show.
If I was an extremist I'm sure the govt would be running background checks on me and keeping tabs on what I'm doing, whether or not I was born here.

Truly, religions are becoming irrelevant. Faith in God needs no religion. As scientific knowledge increases our understanding of the universe, and for that matter human nature, makes us realize that we are one single entity. Those that require current religion to make themselves different and follow archaic traditions are entrenched in the past. Only scientific knowledge can lead us to prosperity.

How about all American Catholic, Pentacostal, Southern Baptist? While the media regularly spits contempt and disdain for Christianity they befoul themselves over the very same Islam that has shown itself to be totally and often violently intollerant of womens rights and homosexuality and virtually incapable of seperating the of church and state.

Maybe if we ever have a professional anti-Catholic contingent (again) in this country, we can think about it.

Our fellow Americans who worship as Muslims are the only major group of regular Americans having lies spread about them on a daily basis by a well-funded, dedicated, completely incorrect contingent of detractors, though -- hence the need for that show.
