Why I Want to Be the Values-Voice in Congress

Posted: 02/ 6/2012 9:11 am

In 2008 I was asked to be a national co-chair of 'Rabbis for Obama.' The position might have given me access to the leader of the free world and perhaps important leverage given his testy relations with Israel. But I declined the offer. Though I am inspired by President Obama's personal story and see him as an exemplary husband and father, I disagree with the Democratic president on too many issues. And now, in the same spirit, I have cast my yarmulke into the ring by declaring my desire to seek the Republican nomination for Congress in New Jersey's ninth district where I live. I am now actively exploring the viability of my candidacy and my ability to integrate existing responsibilities into the considerable effort a successful candidacy will entail.

Why would a Rabbi run for Congress? Because the problems we're seeing in our great nation are not caused by an economic downturn but by a values erosion, and I intend to be the values-voice that Congress so desperately needs.

The values that have dominated the American political landscape for decades is the American obsession with gay marriage and abortion, to the exclusion of nearly all others, which explains why our country is so incredibly religious yet so seemingly decadent. It's time to expand the values conversation and policy agenda. Let's begin with really saving the institution of marriage by focusing squarely on the outrageous fifty percent divorce rate. I will promote legislation that will fight marital breakdown by making marital counseling tax-deductible. Let's give husbands and wives whose families are collapsing a financial incentive to get the help they need so that their kids don't end up like yo-yos bouncing from home to home. I am a child of divorce and hosted a national TV show that saved families from being part of a tragedy that must finally be addressed on a grand scale.

And while we're at it, let's consider legislation to recreate an American Sabbath so parents have an incentive to take their kids to a park rather than teaching them to find satisfaction in the impulse purchase. Bergen County, where I live, has Blue Laws that keep shopping malls shut on Sundays, allowing families to coalesce around the dinner table rather than the department store. Beyond helping the family, this will also help counter the growing materialism that continues to poison the American soul leading to the near-collapse of a $10 trillion economy just three years ago when we had homes that were never large enough, cars that were never new enough, and designer labels that were never fashionable enough.

Eighty-one percent of 18- to 25-year-olds surveyed in a Pew Research Center poll said getting rich is their generation's most important or second-most-important life goal, while 51% said the same about being famous. I am pro-wealth, but only when it is consecrated to a goal higher than mere consumption. That is why I propose a moment of silence to start the day in public schools so children are given time to reflect on issues and a Being larger than themselves. Separation of Church and State is key in our nation. But that means not imposing a religious creed on any citizen rather than chasing G-d from public life. We should also be combating the growing narcissism of our kids by proposing a year of national service after high school. Just two percent of the American population protect our freedom in the military while the remainder do scant public service and with one daughter now entering the Israeli army and a son who has been nominated to West Point, I believe strongly in kids who choose to serve.

The reality-TV generation, which experiences exploitation as a way of life, needs to rediscover human dignity. What President Obama, well-intentioned as he may be, doesn't understand about his propensity to throw money at every social problem, aside from bankrupting us through ever greater debt, is that of course people want food, clothing, and shelter. But more than anything else they want a life of dignity and self-sufficiency. Dignity is the human aura that accrues to the individual through self-reliance. A dependent life is a fundamentally undignified life. Self-respect is earned through the sweat of one's brow. Yes, people want to pay their bills and we all seek material comforts. But more than anything else we seek an existence infused with a sense of relevance and meaning. Government must, of course, provide a safety net for a rainy day. But only self-reliance creates a sunny life. I will promote policies that lessen the size of government so that citizens can take both moral and financial responsibility for their own future.

As a father of a large family, I wish to champion the fiscal accountability necessary for working parents to survive this economic downturn through a lessening of the outrageous tax burden and allowing them to keep more of their money and spend it on their families. We need a flat tax and a simplification of the tax code that addresses both Warren Buffett's point, that billionaires should not be paying taxes that are lower than their secretaries, but that is consistent with bringing taxes way down.

When it comes to education, parents have a right to choose who educates their children and to which schools they send their kids and, as such, vouchers for parents empowering them with school choice are a must. It is outrageous that one of the most important decisions of a parent's life, namely the people and environment that will influence their kids, is made by the government. But we must simultaneously strengthen our public schools by introducing more values-based learning as well as a dress code that fosters dignity and self-worth.

In foreign policy I believe in the obligation to resist evil and I intend to be a voice of firm American resolve against tyranny. President Obama has allowed America's global leadership to seriously weaken. The war against Kaddafi was one that touched me personally. I led the campaign in Englewood to push the tyrant out of our neighborhood when he sought to live in the Libyan-owned compound that is my immediate next-door neighbor and whose tax-exemption I have fought for three years. But even when Kaddafi began slaughtering his people, it was the British and the French, rather than our president, who led the assault against the dictator and Obama has done almost nothing to stop Assad from slaughtering the citizens of Syria. Worst of all, it seems that under our president's watch Iran will build a nuclear weapon. I will push for and support the drastic measures necessary to ensure that so dangerous and murderous a regime never acquires a doomsday device.

President Obama has, thankfully, reversed course on his unfair pressure on Israel and deserves credit for increasing military and intelligence cooperation with the Jewish state. But who is to say that this has not happened because of his shellacking in the 2010 midterm elections and that the pressure won't resume if reelected? For this reason, and because Israel is America's most stalwart and reliable ally -- championing American-democratic ideals in the world's most dangerous region -- I intend to be Israel's staunchest supporter in the United States Congress, should the good people of the New Jersey's ninth district see fit to choose me as their representative.

Considering that you guys freed the slaves, gave women the vote, allowed black people to vote, and introduced more equality for minorities generally (don't forget Jews were discriminated against too) I'd say that values have been strengthened rather than eroded. Eroded from when anyway? People have always committedadultery, visited prostitutes, and committed other sexual misdemeanours. I suspect there were more prostitutes in the supposed paragon of moral rectitude Victorian age than there are now. Homosexuality was tolerated in Britain at this time as long as you were upper-class and confined yourself to lower class partners. It was tolerated in ancient Rome as long as you acted the male part. Sorry Rabbi but sometimes I get tired of people claiming that morals or values have eroded. It's rubbish.

Go for it, Rabbi! We need a kippah in Congress! ... and one who will speak up like you. You rock that world with some sanity and focus. You can do this. You're always good for a first!
Mazel tov on your decision to pursue this to whatever degree you can.

Big hugs to you and your family! Shalom,
Annoula

"We need a kippah in Congress! ..."
Seriously?
I could have sworn that what is really needed are more representatives working for THE PEOPLE of New Jersey!

What you are saying is let's turn the US congress slowly into another knesset. Well there is one and it is in Israel. We have enough religious zealots in the congress. Let's not throw in another one in the mix.

Rabbi Boteach, what you are proposing is disgusting and antithetical to foundation of Western Liberalism and the Enlightenment. It becomes more and more apparent to me that your antiquated and quite irrational beliefs are the foundation of your campaign. Values-voice? Really?! Its not the government's job to teach any values except for maybe civics, values are the realm of each individual. If you were to say that civics or critical ethical thinking should be a required class in school, I'd support you but not this nonsense. Tax deduction for marriage counseling, maybe a good idea but why is it something that the government should engage in? Marriage is a religious institution and should remain there, the only thing government should engage in is civil unions. One system of recognition of commitment for all despite sexual orientation. Let the parents be responsible for their marriage and family, not involve the government.

Your idea for an American Sabbath is absurd and entirely religious oriented, what do you think weekends are for? Families and individuals can determine how to spend those days, not the government and especially not at the cost of forcing people to shut down their stores, its their right to keep it open just as they can when there are NATIONAL holidays. No one is chasing god from public life, if you want to start a show, movie, play, book or whatever about God go ahed and do it, but just don't bring that into schools or government.

Rabbi, you are either clueless or an egregious propagandist.

Unfair pressure on israel? Do you think we should just sit back while israel builds illegal settlements on palestinian land? When you know full well it has nothing to do with security and it is all about trying to make life so hard the rightful owners of the land will leave.
Israel is not our ally and never will be. As long as israel tries it's hardest to drag us into a war with Iran, it is nothing but a liability to us.
We don't need a congressman who will support israel blindly, we need a congressman with conviction and will stand up to israel and tell them we will no longer be the big brother cleaning up your mess. Fat chance of that from you though, you would be an embarrassment.

Rabbi,

Question: Since I am an American Jew, please explain to me how my family values could be strengthened by gathering with my family on the Christian Sabbath on Sunday (instead of doing the weekly grocery shopping etc.), while having only the Jewish Sabbath on Saturday left to shop for food?

You are the second Rabbi I have heard this week suggest that the USA needs to be more fundamentally Christian. (The first was Glen Beck's Rabbi Lapin).

Thank G-d I have the 1st Amendment to preserve my right to function as a Jew in America, and protect me from "Rabbis" like you and Lapin who would codify (establish) Christianity in American law.

Faved.

Church and state should be like the quintessential oil and water, no matter how many "chemists" come out of the woodwork.

Let's also talk about how Mr. Boteach does not want to be "A" Values-Voice in Congress, but "THE" Values-Voice in Congress.

Not one of many, or one of some, or even one of two or three. The SINGULAR "values-voice" in the entire body, in his warped view.

Before you say I'm nit-picking, this guy is supposed to be a well-educated, professional writer. He knows the difference between singular and plural, in this case.

Basically, it is very telling about the author's ego that he not only believes that his particular brand of evangelism is some kind of great value system, but that NO ONE ELSE in the entire Congress is a "Values-Voice."

Again, this is just code for "Religious-Voice" - which is the problem with our Congress, not the solution.

I'm still waiting to see how we can afford all the tax cuts he wants that are aimed at rich folks like him.
His platform seems to be "I want more tax cuts for my family" and that's about it.

Actually, that's not all, MarcEdward.
The Rabbi also plans to force the Orthodox Jewish lifestyle into "all the good people of New Jersey's ninth district" ...whether they like it or not!

Are you proposing that we should have sent our troops into Libya as well? President Obama did exactly what he said he would do. Support the mission to get rid of Ghaddafi, but that we would not be the lead. We lost exactly 0 troops, and Ghaddafi is gone.
If you are so bent on "drastic" measures when it comes to Iran and a nuclear device, are you also with requiring israel to get rid of their nuclear devices? What is good for the goose must be good for the gander.

What type of "Values" based learning do you propose? The US is declining in the areas of math and science, what do they have to do with values? There is a reason separation of church and state was established in this country, to keep religious teaching out of schools and the government. Freedom of religion and freedom FROM religion. If school funding wasn't based on property taxes and schools were equally funded there wouldn't be such a disparity in the quality of such schools. What you are proposing is a system where parents can send their kids to a school without kids they don't want theirs to be around. Sorry, this is 2012. Segregated schools are not equal, diverse schools produce better results.

A flat tax that brings taxes way down? For whom? A flat tax would have to raise taxes on some and lower them for others. Right now, a large percentage of the US population do not earn enough to be required to pay FEDERAL income tax, but still pay income taxes, sales taxes and property taxes. Are you saying these are the people who need to pay more in taxes? I thought you said working parents should be able to keep more of their hard earned money. Something has to give.
I'm not sure if you are aware, but the happiest countries are also the ones that are the highest taxed. Seems like they are perfectly happy paying a higher rate. Hmmmm, we have had the lowest effective tax rates in decades and republicans still cry for lower taxes. If tax cuts create jobs, where are they?

Pretty hypocritical to say people should be treated with dignity, what about the palestinians? Are they not deserving of dignity?
What are some specific policy proposals you would put forth to "lessen the size of government so that citizens can take both moral and financial responsibility for their own future." Sounds like you just want to cut public assistance.

I don't want my children thinking about a "being larger than themselves," I want them thinking about math or science. Keep your reflection time for your prayer meeting.
A year of required service, would that be paid or unpaid? While these kids out of high school are serving who would be paying to feed, house and train them? That does not sound like a republican idea in a time of exploding deficits. Isn't the debt the most important subject we should be concerned about? Sounds like a very expensive proposition.
