Lodging in Collinsville

Posted: 12/04/2012 2:51 pm

The video below is from a video deposition with Collinsville, Illinois, police officer Michael Reichert.

Reichert is the office who pulled over filmmaker Terrance Huff earlier this year and subjected him to a drug search after a questionable alert by Reichert's drug dog. That stop and search, Reichert's history, and the related issue of asset forfeiture were the subject of a long piece I wrote for the Huffington tablet magazine a couple months ago.

The video is stunning. Reichert actually admits that he sometimes wipes marijuana on cars parked in the lots of Collinsville hotels. He says he does this as part of a training exercise for the dog. He also asks employees for tips about suspicious guests from out of state. And he concedes that it's possible someone on whose car he has "wiped" marijuana might later get pulled over and subjected to a drug dog sniff.

Perhaps even by Officer Reichert. Sounds like a good reason to avoid visiting Collinsville.

Called the mayor (John Miller). Was told he wasn't in, and transferred to multiple other people who weren't in, either. Finally asked to put into his voicemail, but when it rang, lo and behold it was Mr. Miller himself. While admitting he had knowledge of the Michael Reichert affair, his only response from then on was "no comment". Not even politically astute enough to say it's being investigated, etc. Very nasty tone, appears more concerned with coverup than truth. Looks like a thorough housecleaning needed in Collinsville.

As somebody who has to travel to Madison County, IL several times a year for work, I can assure you that there are plenty of reasons not to visit Collinsville. That being said, this might beat all the other reasons combined, which is saying something.

Every arrest he has ever made is tainted and should be thrown out.

Small town PDs have always had an addiction to forfeiture assets. There's a lot of money to be made in taking other people's stuff based on bogus charges.

Where did he get the marijuana that he wipes on the cars of innocent citizens, and why is he carrying it around with him in public?

The hugest story yet to break would be something, anything,
that is not corrupt to the gills in the land of the free.

Lets give officer Reichert some slack.

He was given a job to do, arrest people. So if he had to illegally possess some marijuana in order to arrest more people, can you really blame him?

And I'll bet, based on the complexions of those that frequently that hotel, that he felt he had "probable cause" to arrest anyone who came out of that hotel.

Isn't that within the unspoken realm of "Standard Police Procedure. Something like keeping a spare gun to drop at the site of a death.

So he's not in jail why? And the head pig is trying to silence him, what a surprise. Shady redneck cops. I wonder what other skeletons are in the city of Collinsville's closet?

Happens everywhere. Be careful driving through Robertsdale, Al. My daughter was pulled over for speeding, her car was illegally searched, she was arrested for prescription medication and held in jail for 6 hours before being allowed to call me. We eventually spent $5000.00 in attorney's fees to have all charges dismissed. This happens all the time in that town. It is their largest money maker.

Robertsdale, Foley,Gulf Shores, I'm sure that what we just witnessed is a standard operation for numerous towns around here. I know that the sheriff's department loves concerts at the Wharf just for the fact that lots of out-of-towners may be carrying a little something for personal enjoyment and therefore, deputies pull people over, left and right, hoping to bust them for drugs. I'm in O.B.,so you're not quite so endangered.

It really makes no difference what he did to these cars. Police will keep walking a dog around a car until it finally does something that the officer claims was an alert on drugs. The officer will then claim probable cause and search the vehicle. With minority suspects the dogs are more than 50% inaccurate.
