Hollywood loves to celebrate itself with awards shows. This Sunday, as some 3,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences convene at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles for the 86th Annual Academy Awards ceremony, some 40 million of us will tune in at home.

The awards show started in 1929 at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood and can now be seen live in more than 200 countries. 6,000 members of the Academy cast votes to reward the previous year's cinematic achievements across 25 categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best male and female stars and supporting actors.
