Amy Harada Poncher of Los Angeles documents Hillary Clinton's speech from inside the Pepsi Center on Tuesday, August 26. Poncher gives us a view from the top while seated in Section 332, but then travels down to the floor to capture the energy of the crowd. Poncher attends the convention as a representative for The Human Rights Action Center and received her floor pass from a friend.

I did not read that message in her speech as you did. I enjoyed the fact that she referenced Harriet Tubman, but I am a little slow anyway.

The moment in Hillary's speech that was most revealing was her evocation, at the end, of Harriet Tubbman. The lines were crowd pleasers, but they were also Tubbman's exhortation to a runaway slave. Go back. Reread that paragraph in Clinton's speech. Then review the historical context around Tubbman's writing. It's unmistakable. Increasingly, it seems that the Clintons are subtly using racial code to promote unease with Obama. No doubt, he holds the "runaway slave" position in the party, in their minds. If this was unintentional, it is very revealing of Clinton's patronizing and belittling attitude toward her African American challenger. If it was intentional, it is quite simply unforgivable. You can bet the bank that the Obama team and many others understood exactly what she was doing.
