Tumblr Redefined Society vs. Beauty for Me

Posted: 02/ 1/2012 10:08 am

A few weeks ago, I posted a picture of myself on my Tumblr blog. I had no makeup on and my bangs pinned back, revealing the abnormalities caused by Pfeiffer Syndrome, a condition I was born with. To be honest, I didn't think much of it. After taking the picture, adding a description and posting it, I turned off my computer to go to bed. Waking up the next day, I had over a thousand messages in my inbox, tens of thousands 'reblogs' and countless new followers. Here is a screengrab of the post:

The blogger inside me was excited to get all this activity on my page, but the teenager inside me was struck by the messages I was getting. I was being called an "inspiration," and people started telling me their stories and praising me for being so open with mine. I hadn't really thought that putting it out there vulnerably would strike anyone. After all, I have been living with this for 18 years and I'm used to it.

After a while it occurred to me that not only were people reacting to my story but to the fact that I was different, and different isn't something our society trains us to like. When I go out in public people will stare. I can't wear makeup like a normal teenage girl. It can be an inner battle to leave my house, but again, I've grown used to it. I've accepted a lot about myself already.

So what about Tumblr make me look at things differently? These people who got something out of my story made me take another look at society. On Tumblr, as odd as it seems, some people truly see through society. The only place they feel safe and able to express these opinions is on their blog (not to say Tumblr is totally hate-free, but it's as close as I have ever seen). This says a lot about media causing self-image problems, in my opinion.

Who gave celebrities, magazines, and models the right to tell us what is "normal"? We see ad campaign after commercial after movie after celebrity red carpet, and take those messages as right. But in reality, shouldn't we be able to define beautiful ourselves? Shouldn't 10 nice comments weigh more than one negative?

Society tells us what is beautiful, to make us buy or do anything to be that way. I may not love the way I look, as a lot of teenage girls don't, but makeup and designer clothes won't change that. The problem has become internal because these opinions of beauty have become fact. You aren't beautiful if you don't have this, or if you don't look like her.

Tumblr is where I took my story, because it is a place to be heard and helped, without judgment. It's as if you are free from the rules of society. You may think society isn't to blame, but if this whole thing has taught me anything, it's to challenge fact. Challenge the definition of what is beautiful.

Nice article ! One man's perspective; In my "looking for a life companion years" I saw many pretty faces that did not move my emotional system, when another guy would rave about how beautiful a female was I would look and could see why he thought so, but she didn't usually look attractive to me, though there have been about seven females who have caused my emotional system to take note I have looked at every female as if she were the only female on earth and I was the only male and how great-full I would be to have her companionship and have considered being perfectly faithful and helpful to some very non-professionally-beautiful (unusual looking) females. Unfortunately for me I have pretty much always been a "Know-it-all religious fanatic" on a mission to make the world a better place according to Biblical plans and have never found anyone who was on a similar mission to work with. My experience has lead me to believe that no matter what one looks like there is someone who will either love your inner or your outer beauty and sometimes both.

I find refuge in tumblr for the same reason! It's the one place I feel I can truly express myself, and find other like-minded individuals, that I often can't find where I live

Beauty definitely has more than one definition. You're such and inspiration for doing this, and for holding your head high, after what you've gone through. It definitely makes me realize I need to be more thankful in my life, and to be a more positive person in general. But I don't think you're ugly at all, from the way you present yourself, and your physical appearance in general. You have really pretty eyes!

Renee hopefully what you are learning is that real people can like you just for who you are. And I think I would have enjoyed knowing you had we been lucky enough to cross paths. Best wishes.

Babe, our bodies are just shells of flesh and bone. What counts in all of us is our soul.
And you my dear, have a beautiful one.

Rene,

Your last sentence is the head on the nail:
"Challenge the definition of what is beautiful."

(It should also go on a t-shirt)

And here I was ranting in a previous posting aboug Sheryl Sandberg: Guess what? On her top list of what she has and I don't...was beauty:

Thank you for setting things straight,

I absolutely agree, my dear. Tumblr is such a nice little loophole in society where the majority of people (who I've found anyways) view people/social issues/culture in a different way than the mainstream. It makes me feel so good to know that a place like that exists on the internet.

This is America and good looks count for everything - how else could we explain Paris, Kim, and Lindsay? Actually, beauty IS important, but not the external kind - I love people who are beautiful in their love, their character, and their work ethic. You probably won't win a beauty contest, neither will I, and neither will most of the people I treasure. I wish I knew you, you would probably be a friend.

You just named three of the most depressing, disgusting, drugged-up or messed-up women in the media today. And their "good looks" are attributed to hair extensions, fake tans, botox, liposuction, lip injections, and spray tans. I see that you are not trying to be negative, but I just thought I would mention that.

My comment was intended to reflect how much (over)emphasis we place on appearance. I used those star names to show how Hollywood (? and America) values boobs over brains, notoriety over integrity, and being idle wealthy to actually accomplishing something with your life. This isn't even gender specific - there are a lot of guys out there with the same lack of qualifications.

woops i repeated "spray tans" twice, ignore that, i got 6hrs of sleep, hahah
