The End of Fear?

Posted: 05/ 3/11 02:26 PM ET

About a year after 9/11, I was sitting in an airport terminal, waiting for a flight, when nature called. I turned to the young lady sitting next to me, and asked her if she would watch my carry-on baggage while I went to the restroom.

She looked at me, she hesitated, and then she asked, "How do I know that you're not a terrorist?"

She wasn't kidding. She looked a little scared.

I thought about delivering some snappy retort, like "I used to be a suicide bomber, but I quit, because I didn't like the pension benefits." I could see, though, that she was actually feeling some fear, so I looked her in the eye and said, "I'm not a terrorist." She thought for a moment, and then she said, "OK, I'll watch your bags."

And off I went.

After that conversation, I realized that 9/11 had not only radically altered our national security priorities, but also the way that many people thought about others. And the weird possibility grew in many people's minds that any stranger could be a killer.

Now that Osama bin Laden is dead, I hope that that feeling also is dead. The feeling that we live in fear. Judging by all the spontaneous celebrations, maybe that feeling is dead.

We have often heard the phrase, "if xxxxxxx, then the terrorists have won." Martha Stewart once told her employees that if not enough of them attended her company Christmas parties, then "the terrorists have certainly succeeded."

Here is one formulation of that formula that we didn't hear: "If the terrorists make you feel terror, if they make you fear them, then the terrorists have won."

I hope that that's over, now.

We spend roughly $3,000 for every American each year on the U.S. military. There is a theory that the reason for this is that the military-industrial complex controls our foreign policy, in much the same way that the medical-industrial complex controls our health policy, and Wall Street's money-industrial complex controls our economic policy. That public opinion is simply irrelevant.

Maybe. But public opinion since 9/11 has been skewed by the real fear that many Americans have felt. Urged on, of course, by certain parasites in the body politic who want us to believe that they are the only ones who can save us from the threat.

In George Orwell's book Nineteen Eighty-Four, the fundamental basis for the totalitarian state that he portrays is the fear and hatred of the foreign enemy, Oceania. A siege mentality, brought about by endless war.

I hope that the death of Osama bin Laden will mean the death of the siege mentality. The end of the perceived need for foreign occupations, and the end of foreign occupations.

I hope for peace.

Courage,

Alan Grayson

I really enjoyed this article and I hope it proves to be correct. I want to believe that this will cause Americans to instill a little more faith in the their fellow citizens regardless of how they look or dress. That the people and our leaders alike will realize that our military strength isn't always the answer, but maybe our civilians living outside of terror can be even more powerful. Ultimately though the death of one man no matter how evil won't stop the mindset that has been instilled in many Americans, but it may lead to a pause in acceptance and eventually the questioning of those fears.

Our culture is fear and consumption-driven. Orwell also wrote: "the purpose of war is not victory, but continuation." Fear keeps us distracted from other serious problems. Sure, a terrorism threat continues. But statistically, people have a better chance of being killed by their health insurance companies than by a terrorist--if you're lucky enough to have health insurance.

Another way to read all of this is that basically, the military-industrial 'thing' has now gotten SO big, that it now creates its' own political and economic weather, and Osama? Well, he's another Dang Furriner that didn't like the US, but mistakenly decided to take America on, and, the rest is history, sort of. In the wake of 9/11, it became clear how little we really DO know about the world, as well as the people that've been coming to take up residence or become educated within our borders. One thing's for sure, though, there's going to be a lot more emphasis on Pakistan, in the future, as country of origin for suspicious persons, especially considering that that's also where the Times Square bomber-guy came from.  America's not universally beloved throughout the world, and whether it's people trying to politically co-opt American kids, or college students, or other citizens of this country, or themselves setting out to perpetrate their nefarious misdeeds by whatever means, there's always the possibility that we'll encounter strangers in our midst that might wish us harm, and that's just American criminals, nevermind the imports.  It's a large, complicated, inter-related world, now globally digitally connected, and as the Koran-burning showed, a butterfly on this side of the world can start a hurricane on the other.  We don't live in a 'safe' world, but maybe with Bin Laden's demise, it got a l i t t l e safer. Maybe. Can we now throw caution to the wind, and go about our merry way and daily business? Many people decided to do that, years ago. There's always the possibility that some new group of subversives will manifest themselves, but we'll cross that bridge, when we come to it.

Great post Mr. Grayson! You're absolutely right. We need to stop living in a state of fear - this will do more to show the terrorists that they can't beat us than all the military operations you can muster.

Mr. Grayson - nice to hear from you.

Fear unites the primitive mind; I doubt that the GOP is going to stop the mongering on any level to avoid dealing with long term solutions. One can always hope.

I hope so, too.

Funny, I never thought Grayson and I would want the same thing (even jelly beans).

I believe the death and demise of obl is symbolic in the fact that it has finally demystified the man and the fear he represented to the mere mortal he really was. It serves to prove that in the end, he was only just a crummy little criminal, who died in the dark of the night like a rabid dog with a merciful bullet to the head. It just seems like it might be a good time to walk away from this and move on with our normal lives.

This is the end of fear much the same way BO's election was the end of racism ("post-racial" America) LOL

Looking forward to your reelection Mr. Grayson. Have you moved to a Democratic district yet? You do know that it's easier to be elected as a Democrat that way, right? Keep up the good fight.

Terrorism comes in many different entities the most fear Americans are feeling today is the fear whether this nation will survive the greed and self indulgence the Corporate world is bringing down on this nations political system. The working class needs a break and the Corporate class isn't allowing that need, fact is wealth is driving this nation into bankruptcy and our politicians are riding that crazy train all the way to Washington. Trouble is the political people Americans are sending to Washington are tone deaf and can't hear the people they represent, why because of all that money being shoved at them and we all know after that mortgage disaster bankers and Wall Street know best...........

I wonder what has happened to the country that I grew up in. I realize that 9/11 was a horrific thing. But not once since then have I ever been afraid accept when there was a damn good reason to be afraid. I was born during WWII. I grew up with newsreels of war and devastation. I went to school with blacks and Mexicans and not once was I ever afraid of them. I went to Africa right out of high school and I was sent out into the bush by myself with an Ibo houseboy/translator to do an irrigation project. I never once thought to be afraid of anyone even tho I probably should have since all these people were devout Muslims and we know how violent they are. A couple of years after returning home I was drafted and went to Vietnam. I don't remember ever being afraid even tho I was a crewchief on a Huey and my supposed life expectancy was at that time about 3 weeks. I was shot at, shot up and crashed a couple of times but not once was I ever afraid because I was too busy doing my job and I knew I could count on the courageous people around me just doing their jobs. Maybe there is something wrong with me. I know there are bad people out there who might want to do me harm because of my nationality, race, economic status, or just the way I look or dress. So what? I don't have time to waste on fearing what isn't. I will have fear when and if I encounter a situation that I can't handle and so far that hasn't happened. My parents taught me that both thru word and example. So it is time for all Americans to say, we shall only fear fear itself and we will prevail. And now is the time to put the fear of the People into our elected officials who seem to have plenty of fear for us but not of us! Terrorists have no power to instill fear but these corrupt venal cretins in Washington are fearful in that they would enslave us and remove our rights which is worse than a terrorist any day!

I think the poster is confusing "pissed off" with "scared". I have yet to meet a single fellow citizen who has voiced or demonstrated the slightest fear of terrorists. And I've met a whole bunch of Americans who are, and remain, pissed off that the federal government could so flounder, and continue to flounder, in it's most basic responsibility to protect America from foreign (and domestic) threats. It's common and almost infallible human nature that we accuse others of our own flaws. If I lie, I will tend to accuse others of lying. If I am prejudiced, I will tend to accuse others of prejudice. And if I am fearful, I will tend to accuse others of fear. This is how people work.

You are correct. And in this nation we are trained virtually from birth to be afraid of something. The fearful are much easier to control as the Oligarchs know. Faved for your clear thinking.

Osama the Collaborator: The Weird Zone

If you will consider that Osama was co opted by the US to fight Russians in the 1980's, then one could suspect he was a sort of middle man, taking money where he found it. He was maybe like a Charles De Gaulle or George Patton figurehead of WWII not really in a chain of command, but a figure that Al Queda could use to deflect interest from the real generals. I suspect he passed information with little snippets of real verifiable intell and a lot of unverifiable bull between Al Queda and the US for money. Finally he got pushed into hiding where he became an idle wheel not worth a security detail. One could conjecture all sides protected him until the time came to let hostilities die down, so he was abducted and provided a new identity. This could be only unverifiable bull.

If you see a tall Arab on the Republican Party ticket this coming election he might be worth another look. Anyway there will be another villain along soon enough. He may ask a lady to hold his bag.

I hope that feeling is dead as well and we can cut the entire TSA budget of what 8 odd billion and live in freedom of fear as we should be. Al Qaeda is what 1000 people strong around the globe and their leader is dead. It's time to get back to reality.
07:46 AM on 05/04/2011
we can cut the entire TSA budget ......don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen. Too much $$$ at stake. Just ask Michael Chertoff

The dark forces in the GOP camp will find ways to keep their flock in fear hate & lies. It is their food and will feel abandoned if they don't produce their needs to them. Like in the story of 'Plato's Cave', every time the prisoner's got out of line, they were shown the shadow of the dragon.

No different than the fear of man-made global climate change. Fear is a tool both parties use to excess.
02:44 AM on 05/04/2011
There's a difference between scientific evidence and fear mongering for the sake of profit. Even the denial of man-made global climate change is based on maintaining profits for the polluters. It's so obvious.
