Fox Attacks: Iran

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

"Fox Attacks: Iran" is a bold effort to provide Americans with a different view of our policy toward Iran than the one Fox News keeps pushing on us. While Fox beats the drums for war, Robert Greenwald has produced documentary evidence that unmasks the 'coverage' for what it is: propaganda to get Americans ready for a Bush administration attack on yet another Middle Eastern nation. Robert has done something remarkable. He has used his extraordinary media skills to make a short video - only three minutes - to educate the American people, using the Internet as a way to connect us.

The issue here is pretty simple. The war in Iraq, which Bush misled us into, has been a disaster. It caused us, and the Iraqi people, a great deal of suffering: more than 3,700 American casualties, more than 70,000 Iraqi casualties, 2 million Iraqis displaced within Iraq by violence fear, and another 2 million Iraqis living as refugees in Syria and Jordan. It has cost our nation a great deal of money, money which could have been better used in educating our children, providing health care to every American, rebuilding our bridges and infrastructure, and helping us move toward a new green economy.

And, ironically, it has made us less safe from the very serious problem of international terrorism.

Osama bin Laden is alive and well and, according to the National Intelligence Estimate, Al Quada is growing stronger throughout the world.

In Afghanistan, the Taliban is reemerging as a powerful adversary, using terrorist skills they learned in Iraq, and the situation there is becoming more difficult. One of the reasons for the reemergence of the Taliban is, in my view, that in order to fight the war in Iraq, the Bush administration has diverted military, intelligence and reconstruction resources away from Afghanistan.

In the midst of all this, the United States, because of Bush's actions, is held in lower regard by the international community than at any time in the modern history of our country.

And, now, there are increasing rumblings that Bush and Cheney are thinking of waging an attack on Iran. They are considering the possibility of bombing Iran's nuclear facilities, and are also considering the possibility of cross-border raids into Iraqi territory.

I believe that the American people understand that with all our problems in Iraq and Afghanistan, and with our active duty military and National Guard significantly over-extended, the last thing in the world that we want is a war in Iran. That is why I introduced S. Con Res. 13 - which would express the sense of Congress that the president should not initiate military action against Iran without first obtaining authorization from Congress.

A war with Iran, combined with what's going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, would be an horrendous disaster. Here's what Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Advisor, wrote recently: "An attack on Iran would be an act of political folly, setting in motion a progressive upheaval in world affairs."

A major military action against Iraq would almost certainly unleash a lengthy war with the Muslim world which would significantly increase the threat of attacks against the U.S. and our allies, as well as compound difficulties for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It would also strengthen President Ahmadinejad's position in Iran against the moderates there.

It would further isolate us with regard to world affairs.

It would likely dramatically increase the cost of oil, and throw the world economy into a recession.

And, if President Bush embarks on military action against Iran without consulting with Congress, it is likely to create a constitutional crisis in the United States.

Nonetheless, Fox News continues to beat the drums for war, war, war, against Iran.

Every American should watch Robert Greenwald's short video, for it shows us that the current Fox drumbeat for war is almost exactly the same as what Fox did, and most of the American media did, in the days before we invaded Iraq.

We know that most of what we were told then in that very loud and determined campaign about the dangers of Iraq turned out to be false. We need to be very, very careful that we don't follow another loud and determined campaign into another disastrous war.

You are missing the point - sadly the Apocalypse is precisely what the "End-time" Evangelists want, and further destabalizing the most volatile area in the world precisely fits their agenda. They think that Jesus will return and the faithful will experience the Rapture, but this can only happen in the final days. Cheers...

Let's get some action going instead of foot dragging waiting for the election. Screw the election now and get these pirates behind bars before they get away scot-free.

There was not one "fact" in that entire Fox TV segment! Only hearsay and supposition. We do not know a thing about Iran, just as we did not know a thing about Iraq--before we pre-emptively attacked.

To go down that same illegal, immoral, expensive road again would be the height of folly.

An attack of Iran would be as criminal as Germany's attack on Russia in 1940. And remember: that didn't turn out so well for the Nazis.

Let me add a little negative campaigning here.

Whom ever you vote for DO NOT VOTE FOR Obama or Clinton.

They will loose any power that the progressives could have, because we need as many switching republicans as we can get and we can't depend on raising the voter turn out of a population that just does not get "it" or really care enough to swing the system around.

I believe as I did with Lieberman, Obama and Clinton can not be trusted to return American back to the people or see that the Bush neoConJobs are made accountable for their war crimes and treasonist actioins. These two candidate are shills supported by the bigot Republicans because they know that those republicans that might switch parties won't do it fro a black cnadidate and (his wife) or a woman candidate.

That is the hard cold fact. Whether you want to believe it or not.

What is all this rehashed rhetoric.
Keep the story simple and repeat the domestic battle cry.

IMPEACH CHENEY AND BUSH (in that order)

Is there something anyone doesn't understand here?
JUst start the preceedings. What ever the congress has to do to put these domestic pirates in jail before it's way too late.

The US has been isolated for some time now.

The US was left out of the profits from the re-aeming of Iraq following the Guld War. I realize the UN mandate prohibited weapons & weapons technology from being sent to Iraq.

The US was left out of profits in the Oil-for- Food Program in Iraq.

Thankfully their is still peace in the Sudan. 2.5 million people killed & another 4.5 million driven from their homes since the Islamic terrorist came to power in 1989. This doesn't even begin to account for the tens of thousands of rapes & other violence. The minimal stats given for Darfur by the Moslem friendly media aren't worth the ink to print them. Darfur is the 'Final Solution'for the Sudan. This is the last area of the Sudan to be cleansed. No telling how many people would be killled if the US had gotten involved.

Communist China, France, Russia are the main beneficiaries of the profits from this civil war. They receive cheap oil in exchange for being sole suppliers of weapons for the Islamic terr govt.

Fox News is just another propaganda platform. Unlike their sacntimonious liberal competitors, Fox provides a soapbox for the populist and/or neocon set. Regardless of one's viewing preferences, it is a challange to discover any truth on the TV set.
Ruppert Murdoch's obvious affection for Madame Hillary, along with his generous campaign donations, should alert anyone concerned about perpetuating America's imperial military ambitions. GOD SAVE THE REPUBLIC!

You are assuming that Bush is going to ask us if he can attack Iran, that WE could stop him.
I guess you Senators have banked on that.
Because you haven't repealed his authorization to use force. You voted, was it unanimously to to use force on Iran if they did something (what was Lieberman's bill) and finally you refuse to start impeachment proceedings, that at least may give the military a little support if they refuse to attack Iran.

Bush and his buddies must not be making enough money in Iraq, so I guess now it's a new ploy to make more money and kill more people.

I hold everyone who voted for Bush responsible for these atrocities... and only they and their children should be sent to war.

Senator,

You're missing a zero at te end of your "Iraqi casualies" number. I'm sure it's more like 700,000 dead...not 70,000.

Dear Senator Sanders -

I doubt these words will register any more than have the rivers of heartfelt words that Americans have poured into our federal representatives' offices for many months now, to no avail. We have no choice, however, as informed citizens, but to keep trying to move those who wield our power in our federal Legislative Branch of government.

Please STOP LYING TO US, Senator. I mean, when I say this, STOP ALLOWING the LEADERSHIP of your POLITICAL PARTY to continue to lie to YOU and to us. OBJECT, Bernie Sanders, when our Fourth Amendment privacy rights are about to be repealed because of a deal your leadership struck behind your back!

I've re-read the Congressional Record's tale of the hour-long FISA "debate" in the Senate on August 3rd. Have you? That "debate" ought to shame and humiliate every member of that body. Every senator had a different understanding of the language you were about to vote on [because you had all AGREED by UNANIMOUS consent to so vote in haste, despite the obvious end-running of democratic process and open debate and discussion about the import of the bills at issue], Democrats were contradicting and misunderstanding each other, and everyone wanted more time, "but time has run out" [- Jay Rockefeller].

In the end, what seems quite clear - beyond the fact that Barbara Mikulski needs remedial reading in The Constitution 101 and that Russ Feingold would make our Founders proud - is that Harry Reid (and Dick Durbin) knew what was about to happen, while most of the rest of you apparently DID NOT know that the fix was in, and that the Bond/McConnell bill (alone) had 60 votes for passage before the "debate" began.

If you believe in democracy, Bernie, and not just politics, you'll talk to your caucus about this appalling practice of blindly "trusting" and quietly accepting top-down party leadership dictates, or sleights-of-hand, and use the inexcusable FISA vote as a case study in how NOT to legislate on behalf of the American people and our Constitution.

Thank you.

Glad you read Scott Ritter's book, Senator! "Target Iran" should be a "must-read" for every member of Congress. Glad you see things as clearly as you do too. Now that little matter of removing the president and vice president before any more mischief can occur. Anybody working on that in the other house, senator? Or is Nancy Pelosi, as the first female "Speaker," still just trying NOT TO SCREW UP? We have a constitutional crisis in progress, and the remedy is impeachment. All in favor, raise your hand!!!!

Fox News is the news that Americans can trust. Fair and balanced! No left winged, pacifist spin....I dig that.

i found this 45 min. documentary made by a dutch station to be extremely interesting. the most interesting comments are made by the leading Israeli military historian. he says among other things:
"we here in Israel have an interest to exagerate the threat that is faced by everybody and his cousin, because that way we get weapons."

and:
"we, (Israel), pursue our own interest. one of the things we have done for the past 50 years we have pretended that we are very small, very weak, so 'please give us money. please give us weapons - and it works'"

and:
"I do not see Ahmadinejad as crazy at all. He is just doing exactly what I would do in his place." he goes on to explain why.

this is full of many other interesting observers being honest and forthright. something that is the antithesis of our foreign policy discussions. i highly recommend readers take the time to see this. it is well worth it.
