I am pleased to hear President Mubarak has agreed to step down from office. We have only to look to the streets in Egypt to see what can happen when people are frustrated with their state of joblessness.

A population of 80 million, with about half under 30-years-old, Egypt has an unbearably high unemployment rate. Nearly half of all Egyptians live under or just above the poverty line, which the World Bank sets at $2 a day. The uprisings in the Middle East show faces of frustrated young people who cannot find work or anxious mothers who cannot feed their children.

The jobless have lost more than their jobs. It's really about hopelessness over the future and losing dignity. Long-term joblessness means more than empty pockets. It means their lives are literally at a halt -- living in limbo and darkness. It means delaying their marriages and starting their own families later, and putting their dreams on hold. That sort of helplessness can only last so long before it explodes into complete unrest.

Unemployment in our own country still hovers above 9 percent, and this rate is shockingly higher for minorities. Many of my constituents are currently struggling to put food on their tables. That's why I am focusing all my energy to find ways to create jobs in America.

My main priority in Congress is to work with President Obama, Governor Cuomo, Mayor Bloomberg to generate new jobs. For example, the White House recently launched a new initiative to help entrepreneurs launch their startups. My colleagues and I are working hard to make sure they have all the resources they need to start a new business that will help foster growth in our communities.

It will take time until everyone can get back to work. But, we in America live in a country where, unlike Egypt, people have the freedom and opportunity to reach their highest potential. Please don't give in, don't give out, don't give up. Help is on the way!

Hey Charlie....and what about the fraudulent foreclosures-please see robosigning. You are an attorney. You know this is flat out perjury. Where has the President been on this issue the last 6 months? He did not even mention the foreclosure crisis in the State of the Union speech. People are losing their homes under fraudulent pretenses, and the President does not utter a whisper about this issue? Charlie, why is the President MIA on this most important of issues?

Limited resources of food, water....

HIgh unemployment......

an ever expanding population........

a shrinking middle class.....

wealth concentrated in the top 2%.........

corruption in business and politics............

limited hope for the future.......

This sounds like a recipe for unrest. Why was anyone surprised?

Trade tariffs anyone? Make it cheaper to buy U.S. manufactured goods vs. those produce by cheap overseas labor. A possible Trade War is, I think, better than the current Trade Surrender.

"Liberalism is Commun1sm sold by the drink"-P.J. ORourke.

I've never known of the country to tax itself into prosperity. Of course, it is there could be wealth confiscation like in Zimbabwe, Venezuela, and USSR. Then the people suffer with unbearable inflation or starvation. Of course, Rangel and Jackson wont speak out against Zimbabwe for reasons that are obvious.

Congressman, if you really want to do your fellow Americans a favor, introduce language for a bill that would peg our tax rates to our employment figures. When unemployment rises, the taxes of the wealthiest should rise. When employment makes gains, the taxes of the wealthiest should drop...to ZERO, if there's full employment.

Challenge the GOP! If they truly believe in trickle down theory, then they should be willing to embrace a tax program that will reward them beyond measure...if their theory works.

Try it!

Get a clue: the richest 2% have accumulated so much more wealth and political power than ever before that they will not allow Obama or Congress to tamper with today's economy, despite the mess it is for the other 98%. Worse, the same 2% have invested so many tens of trillions of $$$ in overseas manufacturing, service ops and R&D that they will fight any attempt to create jobs here, in the USA, that may compete with their investments.

Sorry but this Nation's enemies are right here, at home.

I heard it this week on CNN Your $$$$.

Under Reagan 20 million jobs were created, it continued under Clinton too, about 20 million for the term. But under Bush it changed, some say that 8 million jobs were created, other say 1 million.

Then came the Real Estate/Financial bust and the loss of 8 million jobs. More would have been lost if the car companies had not been given their loans.

So what does it mean? Twenty million jobs that should have been created weren't and 8 million more were lost.

That means 28 million jobs need to be created just to get back to "normal".

We will never get there doing what we are doing.

Stop sending American jobs overseas, change the law. The Republicans stopped it that last time it was put forward in Congress.

The Right may want Economic Suicide but I am sure the American People don't.

WikiLie Alert! Reagan created no such number of jobs here in the USA. Let's get it clear so posters that follow don't start relying on another faux factoid until it's accepted as truth.

They make $2 a day and can't afford food. Right now they are all in an emotional state of hope and change. But what hope? and what change? They don't know. Hope and change in America was an emotionally driven event. What were we hoping for? What change did we get? Well, we got unemployment going from 7% to 10% and lots of excuses as to who's fault it was, but in the real world increased unemployment was not the hope or change we were looking for. When the emotions subside and the power vacuum is filled, then the world will find out the answers. The people of Egypt may be looking and wondering 2 years from now, much as Americans are today.

Cong. Rangel alludes to a human being's demand he/she be treated with dignity (and respect). This demand lies at the core of any popular rebellion/revolt and ultimately to revolution. It is a universal right to equal worth just as it is a universal right to equality under law. It is astonishing how much the human spirit will tolerate social inequality and economic privation. It may take decades but once the tipping point is reached there is nothing like a peoples' frustration to turn a system on its head. The Mexican Revolution of 1910 was one such historical episode where the people demanded and took back their dignity. Much can be learned from that social movement to understand and to predict how Egypt's Revolution of 2011 will turn out.

more hollow words - where are the jobs promised by the republicans in return for the tax breaks for the Billionaires and millionaires - I'll tell you where they went - to stock buybacks designed to increase stock prices ( no jobs here), to oil and gas leases ( no jobs here) AND TO CHINESE COMPANIES LOOKING FOR CAPITAL ( no jobs here ) - in short, forget about it - no jobs here !!!!

I think one problem we have in America is that no one's lived it, depression-style for so long, they really don't have an appreciation for the situation, anymore. The information simply does not compute. Even if you're 'poor', and you get government assistance, you're still making what 'well-off' people are making in many overseas countries, or more. Or MORE. But, it's also an economy of scale, and commodities are of necessity cheaper in a market where people simply do not have that kind of money. But still, many people in this country simply do not 'get it', because they've never really had to do without. Sure, there's grampa's depression stories about rock soup and walking naked 8 miles uphill to school in 4 feet of blowing snowdrifts every day, but that was a long time ago, and maybe his memory isn't quite what it once was. Today's kids, that have never lived in a world without cellphones? No common frame of reference to that. It's just not real. But, it IS real, in countries like Egypt, and in countries like Mexico(YES), and in other nations around the world. And, there are some examples of how we've got some beginnings and inroads on 'poverty' in this country, but still it's not even in the same zip code. We have electricity and running water, even in 'poverty'. If you look at the world in one of those night-time pictures, there's a lot of places with no lights on. Now, maybe that's because they're not stupid, and they go and shut them off at 11PM, and save electricity, and maybe it's because they just do not have the infrastructure, and like 7-UP, never had it, never will. Don't take anything for granted, and instead of whining, dry your eyes, and fill out a job app. If need be, buy a suitcase and a good pair of shoes. Seek, and ye shall find. I'm a jobseeker, too.

If you're waiting for the government to save you, you're already lost. Do something productive while you can! Take a course, Start a business. Move to where the jobs are.

You CAN do it on your own!
