They Just Don't Get It

Posted: 03/30/2012 9:38 am

Yesterday, less than a year after a similar proposal was defeated, the House Republican leadership held a vote on a budget proposal that would extend tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, make deep cuts to programs that serve middle class families and end the Medicare guarantee for our seniors.

As the congressman representing Rhode Island's First District, I have spoken with families across our state who are tired of the same old political games that got our country into this mess to begin with.

They know that Washington should put politics aside and work on policies that will create jobs, support our middle class, and put the economy back on the right track.

But the budget proposed by Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI), and approved 228-191 by the House yesterday, would not only fail to create jobs, it would also cut education and job training programs by a total of $166 billion over the next ten years.

And with so many Americans out of work, it's hard to believe that the House Republican leadership would ask members to support a budget proposal that would seriously undermine key investments that are so important to creating jobs. Rather than trying to pass another tax giveaway for the richest among us, House Republicans should join with Democrats and enact public policies that will actually benefit our middle class and working families.

But that's not all. This Republican budget proposal would also replace the current health care system for our seniors with a voucher program that could allow Medicare to wither on the vine and shift costs to seniors.

That's why, yesterday, I supported an alternative budget proposal introduced by Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) that would have preserved the Medicare guarantee, permanently extended middle class tax cuts, and maintained vital investments in transportation jobs, manufacturing, and education -- while also reducing the deficit through polices that balance spending cuts and increased revenue. This proposal stood in stark contrast to the Ryan plan -- and closely aligned with the priorities shared by many Rhode Islanders, but this proposal was ultimately voted down in the Republican-controlled House.

Earlier this week, I spoke out against the Ryan proposal on the House floor. And yesterday, after supporting the Van Hollen proposal, I joined my Democratic colleagues in voting against the Ryan budget. With virtually no chance that this radical legislation will ever pass in the Senate, it's unfortunate that Washington has once again chosen political posturing over pragmatism.

During my first term in Congress, I've been working to support innovative solutions that will reignite the American dream and build ladders of opportunity for anyone willing to work hard, take responsibility, and play by the rules.

It's too bad House Republicans are fine with more of the same broken political rhetoric.

Our masses of hard working taxpayers made this country what it is. Any politician who turns their back on protecting the health of this concept endangers the future of this experiment called America. Beware of politicians pretending they're concerned about our children's futures as they cater to the big players and line their pockets. Wake up. If we don't matter, nor do our children. This country has become their personal playground and we are the pawns who allow it. How blinded are we as we're made to feel our enemies are each other? America is it's people-not a chunk of land. End the wars, cut back the Military Industrial Complex contracts, eliminate the subsidies, end the Obama tax cuts for everybody, seek ways to freeze the rising COST of healthcare/eliminate fraud, capital gains IS income. Massive Infrastructure spending with fair contracts within state boundaries has never made more sense. Small across the board cuts in each and every category of government spending could unite this country again. Show me shared pain and I'll consider being a Consumer. I hate our class warfare and I resent how we're being manipulated into it.

I voted in 2008 for a man who said America Comes First. Still waiting for a speech to turn into something I can see.

Unfotunately, Rep. Cicilline, they do get it. They fully understand what their proposed policies would do. They simply do not care what happens to the middle class or the poor.

I can tell you the major problems in this country were and are still being created by politicians and their corporate benefactors. The politicians are too busy stuffing their pockets and doing whatever their benefactors want them to do. None ofthese men and women care to do what they were elected to do. They were elected to represent the people and that has gone right out the window. The politics of today are all about politicians. All of the mess we are in today is because the political parties are way too busy fighting each other rather than to come up with answers that benefit all of the American people. Nowhere is it written than money is the root of evil, but it is written that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil. The so called Super Rich have used their political puppets to rob from the poor and middle class so that they themselves can have more and that is evil. Both the House and the Senate are guilty of doing just about everything wrong and pretty much nothing right. Now they are bringing in the Supreme Court who by the way is just as political as any politician in office to do away with a health care program they don't like because it doesn't make them any money. George Orwells book "1984" seems to be almost 30 years late but it sure seems like a Big Brother society!

Thank you David!! It's ridiculous and completely wrong! What about our veterans? Seniors? Fellow citizens? I just shake my head at their stupidity.

Thank you sir. Thanks for calling the country-wrecking Ryan budget what it is, and supporting an alternative that works.

The simple fact is that they do get it. They have their priorities clearly in hand. The ones who really don't get it are your fellow Democrats who remain disorganized. The loss of the House in 2010 should have been a message to Democrats to get their act together, but instead it has been more business as usual- talk populist but walk corporate. The fact that Democrats are not winning support while the Tea Party-controlled GOP is on life support is quite telling.

Democrats need to stop supporting bloated, flawed, special interest approaches to problems like the 2700 page ACA and start supporting simpler approaches like single payer. And then hold your ground! Tell people like Ron Wyden (what have you done to the real Ron Wyden) that when he stands with Paul Ryan he destroys your credibility and reinforces the Republicans' priorities.

Sorry, Representative Cicilline, but your talk is good but your party's walk "doesn't get it."

The ACA is the first step in the right direction. You are right about single payer but that will eliminate private health insurers. Employers are waiting in the wings to get rid of health care beneifits to boost their bottom line. They will to to HCB what they did to pensions.

The GOP is appealing to being selfish and hateful.

When will the democrats start hitting back hard. The republican congress and Pres. Bush cut taxes for the wealthy when we were at war. To be precise, two wars. This is a moral outrage and unprecedented in our history. It is bad enough that the wealthy are grossly under represented in the military; they got a tax break while Americans were fighting and dying. I used to be an independent but after the bush tax cuts, I will always have a deep distrust and contempt for the republican party.

Thank you for your efforts. Any chance you would consider moving to Ohio?
