Debt Political Theater Diverts Attention While Americans' Wealth Is Stolen

Posted: 07/14/11 12:50 PM ET

The rancorous debate over the debt belies a fundamental truth of our economy -- that it is run for the few at the expense of the many, that our entire government has been turned into a machine which takes the wealth of a mass of Americans and accelerates it into the hands of the few. Let me give you some examples.

Take war. War takes the money from the American people and puts it into the hands of arms manufacturers, war profiteers, and private armies. The war in Iraq, based on lies: $3 trillion will be the cost of that war. The war in Afghanistan; based on a misreading of history; half a trillion dollars in expenses already. The war against Libya will be $1 billion by September.

Fifty percent of our discretionary spending goes for the Pentagon. A massive transfer of wealth into the hands of a few while the American people lack sufficient jobs, health care, housing, retirement security.

Our energy policies take the wealth from the American people and put it into the hands of the oil companies. We could be looking at $150 a barrel for oil in the near future.

Our environmental policy takes the wealth of the people -- clean air, clean water -- and puts it in the hands of the polluters. It's a transfer of wealth, not only from the present but from future generations as our environment is ruined.

Insurance companies, what do they do? They take the wealth from the American people in terms of what they charge people for health insurance and they put it into the hands of the few.

We have to realize what this country's economy has become. Our monetary policy, through the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, privatized the money supply, gathers the wealth, puts it in the hands of the few while the Federal Reserve can create money out of nothing, give it to banks to park at the Fed while our small businesses are starving for capital.

Mark my words -- Wall Street cashes in whether we have a default or not. And the same type of thinking that created billions in bailouts for Wall Street and more than $1 trillion in giveaways by the Federal Reserve today leaves 26 million Americans either underemployed or unemployed. And nine out of ten Americans over the age of 65 are facing cuts in their Social Security in order to pay for a debt which grew from tax cuts for the rich and for endless wars.

There is a massive transfer of wealth from the American people to the hands of a few and it's going on right now as America's eyes are misdirected to the political theater of these histrionic debt negotiations, threats to shut down the government, and willingness to make the most Americans pay dearly for debts they did not create.

These are symptoms of a government which has lost its way, and they are a challenge to the legitimacy of the two-party system.

I agree--there is something fundamentally wrong in a system where positive, meaningful government intervention is routinely stymied, subverted, and demonized. I have watched the debacle over the last decade and can't escape the feeling that we're spiralling closer and closer to the drain. There's got to be a better way to do this.

It's a shame the corporate-owned media has a lock down on Congressman Kucinich.

This country is done and I knew this back in 2000 when the Supreme Court stepped in and decided an election's results over it people. And now, as further evidence that democracy has been bought and sold to the highest bidder, last year, the Supreme Court basically ruled that corporations are human entities but do not have the power to vote but may contribute unlimited funds to political candidate's campaign coffers. We the people have lost and many of us are too distracted, or just don't care, to have noticed. In the end, its a race between our environment (that we seem unwilling to take care of and continue to debate about) and the corporations, government, greed, corruption, politics and an unwillingness to take care of each other (in this me, me, me generation) that will ultimately be our demise. We are well beyond civilization's tipping point and are headed down the downslope. And we scientifically wonder in amazement why and how the other 8 planets in our solar system look baron and completely devoid of life!

Typical Kucinich. Completely right about everything that's going on, completely unable to do anything about it. In all the years, Congressman, that you've served, how many bills that you've written have actually gone on to become laws, and have made a real difference in people's lives?

The cultists who follow you are wrong, sir. Like them, I happen to agree with you on almost every issue. Unlike them, I recognize that the only thing that's important is the ability to put those beliefs into action. And until you do, you might as well be another useless pundit.

Without that seed speaking the words of truth to power, even if hopelessly, then even the bare spark of optimism will die. Noone can put those beliefs into action at the current time. That doesn't mean that we should endlessly defer to the moderate positions of the panderers and criminals.

Exactly what have you done for your country? Please be specific.

So what's the state of U.S. civic discourse?

From Robert Reich's article in today's Huffpo: "A recent paper by Cornell political scientist Suzanne Mettler surveyed how many recipients of government benefits don't really believe they have received any benefits. She found that over 44 percent of Social Security recipients say they "have not used a government social program." More than half of families receiving government-backed student loans said the same thing, as did 60 percent of those who get the home mortgage interest deduction, 43 percent of unemployment insurance beneficiaries, and almost 30 percent of recipients of Social Security Disability."

Also worth a look: http://www.alternet.org/story/149019/. Fun facts: 1. If we spent only three times more than our nearest rival on our military, there would be Federal budget surpluses for the foreseeable future. 2. The U.S. ranks roughly 25th among the top 30 economies in the world in government taxes / spending as a portion of GDP. (So government is actually *small*!)

The US is the #1 Economy. You compare to Huge Governments to prove ours is Small?
I agree with our Military expending, But again we Pay for the security blanket for Most of the World. Our Military Expendatures are based on a International Progressive Tax System. As the "riches" we are Expected to pay More.
" the home mortgage interest deduction" Is the only Tax Break I Take (?). Crony Captialism affects many of us. Tax Breaks reduces revenues to the Gov. But (IM-hypocritcal-O)that isn’t a Cost FROM the Gov.account?

God bless you, Congressman Kucinich. I was proud to support you in 2008 and I would support you if you ran again.

We cannot afford to cut Social Security and Medicare in this debt deal. Ameriacns of all ages support these programs and want to strengthen them, not cut or "slash" benefits. http://bit.ly/o7miH5

Generally true.

Washington is a corrupt corporatist kleptocracy.

And, Congress is acting on that commitment.

And, you're a member of Congress.

Wage reductions are the driver of increased corporate profits...."as summarized by JP Morgan, not by some dirty hippie socialist—'US labor compensation is now at a 50-year low relative to both company sales and US GDP.'" and "reductions in wages and benefits explain the majority of the net improvement in margins. "
