Fact Checking the Media: Iran

Posted: 02/ 3/2012 2:05 pm

During an interview last month on CBS' Face the Nation, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta set the record straight on Iran: "Are they trying to develop a nuclear weapon? No." But if you read recent news reports lately, you'd think otherwise.

The media coverage on Iran is mirroring the coverage in the lead-up to the Iraq war: grand claims about a smoking gun that doesn't exist. For example, The New York Times incorrectly reported last month that the latest International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report on Iran concluded that their nuclear program had a military objective. The paper's public editor, Arthur Brisbane, was forced to acknowledge their mistake and wrote: "Some readers, mindful of the faulty intelligence and reporting about Saddam Hussein's weapons program, are watching the Iran nuclear coverage very closely." Other media outlets such as National Public Radio, PBS and The Washington Post have been challenged on their coverage too.

A recent publication from the Center for Strategic and International Studies titled "The IAEA's Iran Report and Misplaced Paranoia," noted that "With few exceptions, these revelations are not exactly new. More importantly, neither is the thrust of the report: that Iran is developing some capabilities that can only be understood as preliminaries to the development of nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, early coverage of the report's release gives the opposite impression."

Many have recognized that the media failed to do its job in the lead-up to the Iraq war. The potential consequences of treading on that same path with Iran are grave. The U.S. has thus far spent over $1.2 trillion of borrowed money on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Military action against Iran would be disastrous for the region and for U.S. moral standing. A serious diplomatic track based on mutual trust and respect is the only way to achieve increased transparency.

With friends like saudi arabia, kuwatti and other 2 bit dictatorships that brutalize their populations.. the usa is lying to us the voters when they use justifications vs other dictators like for freedom.. for liberty.. etc. If those things really mattered to us we'd be invading saudi arabia.. Once you filter out the lies it comes down to conquest for profit and power. There are no "good" intentions.. only US LIES.

someone has got to stop the terrorists traitors and thieves who have seized control of the govt of the usa. I'm not talking about the puppets they install in our rigged sham elections.. i'm talking about the ones who are there.. behind the scenes ever since bush I. bravo for the chinese and russians who veto'd the un attempt vs syria. and bravo for anyone attempting to stop the iran con job who's goal is to invade iran. The single most valid reason for any country on the planet to have nukes is to stop us invasions. Thats a pretty good one if you ask me.

Of the vast aggregate of human beings that I have never met, Dennis Kucinich is my favorite.
Though I am an atheist, I sincerely pray that God bless and protect this fearless and righteous man, who makes the public interest his own.
Please support the re-election campaign of this Last Lion.

Smoke and mirrors. Americans upset with the state of the nation and war on middle class? Look, Iran is hiding in your closet!!

Of course Iran wants a nuclear deterrence. It is the only thing that can make certain western and European powers think twice about screwing with a country. I believe the Iranians have offered concessions, if the U.S. would sign a nonaggression pact with them. The U.S. refused.
The U.S. military can destroy a country in days if not just hours. The Israelis have hundreds of nuclear weapons along with a formidable conventional military, funded and supported by the U.S. and others.
Many countries realize that only nukes offer a real defense. Even if they never consider using them for offense. A country with nukes, that has little aim on world or local domination, can rest much easier and exercise a more independent society and government.

Time to start thinking people. There is only one country in the world that Iran wants to hurt. That country is the United States.  And they have darn good reason for wanting to hurt us. We have it coming. We overthrew their DEMOCRATICALLY elected government back in 1953. They have not forgot and there is no reason the should. Israel is a smoke screen put up by the fourth estate to cover the military industrial complex moves to get us into a war. Iran wants nuclear weapons. Darn right they do. But they have no intention of using them for that is not the purpose of nuclear weapons. They know that once they have nukes the US will back off of them just as we have done to every other country that has nuclear weapons. India has them, Israel has them, north Korea has them. And that means the US treats them differently. No posturing and bluffing with a show of force. Instead we have talks. That is the reason Iran wants Nuclear weapons. To keep the US from attacking them by giving Israel the intelligence and arms to attack.

In the HP "world" section there's a similar article about how badly the EU and Israel wants a war with Iran, and is goading-baiting-pushing us towards that end. Our lawmakers, more fearful of the AIPAC (and other pro-Israeli lobbies) than Hamas, Hezbollah and al-Qaeda combined, as well as eager to make more profits (for their friends, political allies and themselves) is certain to vote on resolutions for war with Iran, should Israel strike first (knowing a retaliatory response from Iran would ensue).

Our corporate-owned media (eg. GE, owners of MSNBC and affiliates) will certainly host "experts," consultants and advisers who'll make the same "talking points" as were made before the war in Iraq:
How dangerous the Ahmadinejad regime is, Iran is making nukes, if we don't strike we'll have "mushroom clouds" all over our cities, we must defend Israel, world access to oil would be disrupted endangering the global economy, etc. There's no doubt most neo-con supporters in the media (Krauthammer, Kagan, Zuckerman, etc.) and former policy makers (Wolfowitz, Ross, Cheney, etc.) all whom stand to gain personally-financially and/or are staunch Israeli supporters - most of them Jewish, will fill the newspaper op-eds and airwaves with similar arguments, each for his own personal motivations, and NONE caring what's best for the nation's best interests (making them all traitors).

It's very ironic as these traitors are actually a threat to not just US but even Israel's long term interests.

I just watched a guy called Ash Jain on C-Span explain how the Iranian regime has become more radical since the overthrow of the Shah in 1979. No mention of America's part in that, of course. It has been a running theme throughout American (and British) history that they support dictatorial regimes up to the point where it becomes either politically or fiscally unprofitable to continue that support. Then they're all about demonisation of their former allies.

I confess that I probably underestimated Cong. Kucinich when
running for Pres.....he's a bit unique, he's said some
things that might make sense but would not
sell well with some .....but we'd all
be better off if we'd listened to
him a long time ago !

He and Ron Paul want a more balanced and
reasonable Middle East, and foreign, policy.
This could keep us out of more wildly
expensive conflicts if not all out war's.
Keep up pressure on the media
and Congress.

CNN became "America's #1 news source" by showing those smart bombs and America's superiority in technology nightly in Dessert Storm. the rest of the 24/7 cable "news" channels and nearly all media hyped the buildup to the Iraq War for the same reason...ratings! being either right or wrong never entered their equations deja vu all over again. Show us those bombs bursting killing "bad guys" that will bring in the rating$$$$.
