We Are Losing Our Nation to Lies About the Necessity of War

What's Your Reaction:

In a little more than a year the United States flew $12 billion in cash to Iraq, much of it in $100 bills, shrink wrapped and loaded onto pallets. Vanity Fair reported in 2004 that "at least $9 billion" of the cash had "gone missing, unaccounted for." $9 billion.

Today, we learned that suitcases of $3 billion in cash have openly moved through the Kabul airport.

One U.S. official quoted by the Wall Street Journal said, "A lot of this looks like our tax dollars being stolen." $3 billion. Consider this as the American people sweat out an extension of unemployment benefits.

Last week, the BBC reported that "the US military has been giving tens of millions of dollars to Afghan security firms who are funneling the money to warlords." Add to that a corrupt Afghan government underwritten by the lives of our troops.

And now reports indicate that Congress is preparing to attach $10 billion in state education funding to a $33 billion spending bill to keep the war going.

Back home millions of Americans are out of work, losing their homes, losing their savings, their pensions, and their retirement security. We are losing our nation to lies about the necessity of war.

Bring our troops home. End the war. Secure our economy.

I gave this speech today on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Mr. Kucinich is a man of honesty and integrity. Ironically though, too much honesty and integrity doesn't get the job done. In politics you sorta have to 'play along' to a degree, all the time looking over your shoulder for the possible knife in the back. Sadly, compromise is foreign to Kucinich. He's moral to the extreme and that won't get you far. I lived in Cleveland in the 70's when he was mayor and the city went bankrupt. It didn't have to, he just wouldn't give one inch to big business. They wanted concessions, commonplace today. But his refusal to budge created the animosity with banks and big business that shut down Cleveland. I doubt Kucinich felt he got the last laugh at that point. Point is, politics and war are hell. I don't agree with either war and wish our boys were home. And I certainly don't agree with 'pallets' of money being sent overseas. But Mr. Kucinich has never really been able to come up with viable solutions. He argues magnificently and honorably, but without compromise he has remained mostly an outsider. Unfortunate, because I agree with most of his ideals. But he has to understand reality and give in occasionally. Remaining the same for 30+ years now, I'm surprised he holds any relevance at all in D.C. Were the world made up mostly of Dennis Kucinichs it would be a far better place. But with only one, he remains only an inconsequential voice of conscience. sad.

Fanned- well said, and very insightful. I also lived in NE Ohio most of my life. I was in Hawaii during his time as mayor, so all I remember was how he was blamed for Cleveland's downfall.
I agree that if there were more like him in DC we could turn this country around, and everyone would be the better for it!

We're also losing our nation to corporate welfare in place of serious social reform but you voted for that. Will you start supporting the wars if Obama tells you it's "for the good of the party"?

The thing about integrity is you only get to sell it once.

Not all 'honorable' in Congress want to lower the deficit-there are those in Congress that have no problem increasing it by billions for Estate Tax Cuts for the uber rich.

Sun Tzu's Art of War - he talks of of the effects war on the economy (11-15) people love quoting this book but forget about the other parts. What he says about the economy is pretty much the same today.

Dennis and Rep Grayson from Florida are the only real voices in congress truely informing us as to the nature of the "thinking" in congress realting to the "wars" in the Middle East and the daily deteriorating economy. The effects of these wars on the nation, the cost in lives and money, the struggling economy and the divisiveness within the country has largely been avoided in Washington. Whatever the reason--the fog of war--profit and greed--stay the course--nation building--fight them over there, not here-- mentality must not be permitted to destroy our own country for the sake of a futile mission in the Middle East. Amazingly, the phony war in Iraq is 7 yrs old, the bungled one in Afghanistan is 9 yrs old with nothing accomplished at a cost estimated a 2 trillion or more if they ever end. Obama is a smart man who believed that the original mission into Afghanistan had legitimacy and merit because bin Laden and al Qaeda was still there and needed to be destroyed. Fewer than 100 are there according to reports and the problems with a Pakistan and Karzai are growing as an ally. A smart man who has the best interests of the nation a heart must see that diminishing returns have set in relating to the fighting in Afghanistan and the cost/benefit has to be applied in order to save what is left of a seriously deteriorating economy at home.

I will probably get a smack-down for saying this, but if Kucinich were better looking he might be taken more seriously as a Presidential candidate. I agree with a lot of his positions. Of course, I want Obama for a second term, but 2016? Am I crazy? (open for debate :-D)

Love that avatar. It is funny - & I bet McCain thought so, too, there on the world stage - knowing he was on camera.Just like McChrystal - mockingly funny - at the time, to him! It also shows his limited, self centered, immature focus.

To your point, it's probably so, that Kusinich's stature may have held him back, but there are plenty of politicians with worse faces or style, I'm sure.

His honesty & viewpoint, as a truth teller, is refreshing, but, if POTUS, he'd have to tone it down. I'm sure though, just as Obama has had to do.To pass a bill important to him, he'd be forced to adapt to the system, and knows how to barter & compromise, to have gotten anywhere in politics. Even if he were elected as POTUS, he'd have to go through the exact same competitive partisanship that has slowed this country down to a crawl........as with Obama.

Meanwhile the combined salaries of the house & senate is staggering, considering how little they actually do - for us, that is.I see this as a place we could cut our budget. Considering all the prestige & freebies, they'd still want the job.

Most of their time, they think & act on behalf of their political aspirations & climb to the top, then to their party.Kusinich knows he can speak out now. If he were president, like Obama, he'd have to represent a broad spectrum of wants & ideals, & button it 1/2 the time,

How to survive the Middle East barbecues
So many wars! So many killed, wounded, and displaced, so many cancer victims from depleted uranium and other victims from all kind of war byproducts. Infested environment! So many wars in the same region of this planet. Many of you participated to anti Iraq war demonstrations! But it was already too late. Please do something now against the war on Iran. I am certainly not an admirer of the regime of Iran nor its human rights record nor its competition with another hegemonic power in the region. This other power is trying its best to trigger a new war. Please do something. Early manifestations might be more efficient. Support my request massively. Defend us! Defend our planet. Defend our environment. Defend your brothers in humanity who already, like me have witnessed so many wars! The war lords and money lords control this planet. The five permanent members of the Council of Security control more than 85% of the weapons commerce. It is not an easy activity; however as members of democracies you have some say, please use it now. At least click on favorite!

Truly, my heart aches for any who've witnessed or experienced war - especially in their homeland. It's all too brutal & destructive.War itself is inhumane, then our govt disputes the fine points of what's considered torture, & what is not!Disgusting & not the America I'd envisioned as a child. It's all so sad & gone so wrong.

I cannot believe we've not evolved enough to find other ways of settling disputes! My brother spent a lot of time working in Iraq, & later in Palestine, as a civil engineer, for the US troops,& also for Palestine, designing new sewage systems & water access.

He lived in an apartment within a Palestinian home, was treated well & made friends. He loved the street & cafe food - of course - as I do, & the people & the cultures he met along the way. While in that area, he visited many countries, & still does, occasionally.

He told me how Israel treated the Palestinian people, which took me a while to absorb, as I hadn't heard that perspective touted here. Why no other countries intervened is still a mystery to me, but now Turkey has stepped up, & caused some changes.

He told me of some type of weaponry Israel used against Lebanon, which apparently desiccates people - possibly a ray, & how doctors didn't know how to treat those affected, as well as the depleted uranium, which stays in the soil.

It's baffling when, as one who grows up loving others, then hears of the use of

I have to say that in some Southern Bap tist and I would venture to guess, other evangelical churches they are preaching :............."It our charge and our duty to defend Israel as told to us in the bible."

The gullible march right on................. and religion rather than reality thinking help divide and to fuel wars. Jews, Islam, Christians, It seems not to matter...........for all of the benevolence and love spoken of.

Where are you writing from? Iraq, Iran, or where?I have fave'd & fanned you, my friend!

I hope your life is not further disrupted & you live a good, long, healthy life, & find some happiness. You sound like a very decent, intelligent person.Too bad governments tear the peoples of this shrinking earth apart. Now people of all nations can talk & email to each other, & will see for themselves, you can find good & bad people in every land.

While some act like criminals, in war, bombs don't discriminate - only people can do that.

I know Obama ran on building up this war so we shouldn't be surprised. My gut is he is doing this for political gain, so the Right can't come at him from the National Security angle (even though they do anyway) It is rather disappointing .... I don't like Ron Paul but I respect his views on this subject, and I wish that people like Kucinich were given a little more respect and weight in the political process instead of being marginalized by special interests and the military complex

You and Ron Paul are the consistent anti-war voices. Thanks for your insight and understanding into the fact that the war IS THE MAIN REASON for our economic decline. I am also glad to see that Repubs Duncan and Dana Rohrabacher (from my old home ground of Orange Country) are turning on the war. Now if you can convince the Blue Dogs Democrats, who are really destroying this country right now, of the costs of this imperial adventure, maybe we can end this fiasco once and for all.

I recall pallets of money, in the billions were also delivered and disappeared in Irag. I recall Paulson when asked what happened to the money given to the banks, hunching his shoulders and saying "i don't know". Yet, they say they can't give small banks money so they can give loans to small businesses. $33 billion would make a huge dent in the unemployment rate. This country has gotten to a state where money is simply given away and they simply hunch their shoulders and say "i don't know" People, that's what thieves do.

I say do what my grandfather did to us when we stole, tell them if they hunch their shoulders and say "i don't know" one more time, i'll burst you in the back of the head with this 2x4. We told him every time. But of course, this is the congress. Who really runs this country?
